Term Coining

Sharing this on the wide open sea of Tumblr , as it may benefit those involved . This is the only post where my DNI is not in place , for the benefit of everyone .

“Pirates” — One who has a similar fictional ship/other to one you highly value , much like “treasure” , and you may or may not view as “competition” , “rivals” , or generally upset you in any way . Visual logos for this could be a ship , hat , anchor , parrot , so on . Feel free to go crazy with flags , but please remember it is meant to be playful and kind to the receiver of this term .

I have made , and started using , the term “Pirates” in place of “Doubles” when people talk about shipping in specific . Although I’m aware the people who read yume doujinshi (please correct me if I spelled that wrong) have their own word , I see a lot of people who use the branch term ( “yumeship” ) and English term ( “selfship” ) use “Doubles” when referring to those with the same fictional interests/others .

I personally do not like this term , as implying someone is a “Double of me” or “of my ship” makes me feel like I strip them of their humanity and selfhood , objectifying them to a copy . With calling them Pirates , it feels much more playful , with a term associated with people/humanized figures and playful childhood media from my memories . I especially like the joke that I’m going to “steal” a self ship I enjoy , much like pirates were portrayed in movies to “steal” (or discover) treasure .

If there’s negative history (especially racism) with calling another person a pirate , please educate me with sources in my comments and I will brew up new terminology . 💛

We need to normalize terms that don’t degrade others / stem from negative things (looking at people who use chud and -maxxing)

Like I think part of the issue is definitely people to actually looking into slang / coined terms before using them hence the repost but JESUS GUYS the last few months have been rough when it comes to bad words being “revamped” and used incorrectly

I do not subscribe to the “no you/your” trend.

I believe it encourages dissociation, dehumanises people, and is generally unhealthy.

I refuse to actively dehumanise people, as a victim of dehumanisation trauma. Talking around people is a form of dehumanisation.

This can also be very uncomfortable to anyone who doesn’t speak english natively, or anyone who has language issues.

I truly believe these people are finding comfort in dissociation and dehumanisation, and I think this trend is going to seriously harm many peoples recovery.

How much art do we consider to be “a lot” for an oc?

I currently have 43 pieces for my main sona Kane and I’ve had him since late January (like the 29 or smth) I have all his lore down to the day and at the moment I have him aging like a normal person but his story taking place at specified times in his life idk if that’s a lot though or not
