Wake up Tumblr! New Pride flags just dropped!
Personally I'm a sucker for a good Spezi (though I haven't tried Paulaner Spezi in recent memories). But the Cola colours do be nice.
Farbpaletten waren so schön, ich konnte nicht anders 🏳️🌈❤️

very funny to me when people act like animal farm and 1984 are revolutionary anti government texts that the Powers That Be dont want you to read when they have literally been a part of every standard middle/highschool english lit cirriculum in the usa and beyond for decades. precisely because theyre such convenient primers to propagandize that Commies = Bad. the government is quite literally making kids read them
also, animal farm is not just anti-communist, but anti-revolution in general. the whole point of the story is if you overthrow your oppressor the new order will just become the same as the one it replaced! the story offers no suggestion of how the animals could have overthrown the farmer without the pigs becoming exactly like them, it just seems to begin and end with "never overthrown your oppressor because you'll end up right back where you started anyways." bleak and ugly story.
Not to be super English major about it, but Animal Farm was NOT an “anti-revolution” story. According to Orwell, it was inspired specifically by the Russian Revolution that led to the Stalinist regime. The story of animal farm is essentially what happened to the Russian people: they had a revolution against the tyrannical ruling class, only for the very people who had promised them freedom to turn into tyrants themselves.
The moral of the story is not “don’t have a revolution,” it’s that you should always be suspicious of those who promise you this utopian idea of freedom while still aiming to maintain power. The pigs never wanted to actually make everyone free, they just wanted to be the ones in charge. The novel details every small instance of the farm sliding further and further into fascism until it’s too late for anyone to do anything about it.
And 1984 doesn’t have much to do with communism at all. It’s about totalitarianism and fascism. There’s nothing pro-capitalist about the book. A totalitarian government like Big Brother’s could exist in either a capitalist or communist society. The point is the control they have over their people, and how important the flow of information is to that control.
George Orwell literally risked his life fighting fascists, so I think it’s pretty unfair to reduce his books to “anti-commie” propaganda. He was intensely critical of any state that maintained too much power over its people, and at the time, one of the worst examples of that was the recent communist revolution in Russia, which deposed a monarchy to install a dictator in its place.
orwell didn't pick up a gun to shoot fascists in spain alongside anarchist revolutionaries and write The book on it just so y'all can pretend the man favored inaction and the status quo.
1984 notoriously got banned in the US for being anti-capitalist and in the USSR for being anti-communist
Cultural Practices: Fire Nation Greetings Pt. 2 - Standard Greeting
While the Fire Nation’s culture gets the most development out of the four nations, their world-building isn’t always entirely consistent. For example, the series experiments with a quite few different forms of greeting for the empire during ATLA’s three seasons. I’ll try to cover all of these unique gestures in three posts.
Wushu Baoquan Li + Bak Mei Li
By Book 3, ATLA had finally settled on a torch-like hand gesture paired with a bow as the standard greeting of the Fire Nation (and the Sun Warriors). This courtesy is likely inspired by two different martial art customs:
Wushu Baoquan Li (武术抱拳礼), which literally translates to “Martial Arts Fist-Covering Custom”, is better known in the English-speaking world as the “Kung-Fu Salute”. As its name implies, it’s a common greeting among Chinese martial artists and a show of respect. The custom consists of a right-handed horizontal fist covered by a open-palmed, straight-fingered left hand. The hand gesture is demonstrated in the bottom color photo.
There are many different explanations for how this gesture came to be. Some say it’s a symbol of peace and trust, as it’s meant to show that the martial artist is not holding any weapons. Others say the fist and open palm represent opposing elements that create a cohesive whole. The fist represents the moon, the tiger, and physical strength; the open palm represents the sun, the dragon, and wisdom.
Bak Mei Li (白眉礼) is a custom unique to Bak Mei practitioners. This gesture is performed by using the left hand to make a vertical fist with the knuckles pointing forward and positioning the open-palmed right hand above the fist. The hand gesture is demonstrated in the bottom black-and-white photo. The martial art was said to have been invented by and named after a monk known as Bak Mei, meaning “White Eyebrows”. According to legend, he was a monk who betrayed his peers by teaching Qing soldiers his style of martial arts and aiding the Qing imperial army in destroying the Shaolin Temple in Henan.
Like the Kung-Fu Salute, the standard Fire Nation greeting involves a right-handed fist and a left-handed open-palm. However, the torch-like shape of the hand positioning more closely resembles the Bak Mei salute. In terms of cultural significance, both salutes are relevant inspirations for the Fire Nation. The Fire Nation version of the Kung-Fu Salute positions the sun-and-dragon hand above the moon-and-tiger fist, which is fitting for a culture descended from the Sun Warriors. The parallels between the standard Fire Nation greeting and the Bak Mei Li might be in reference to the Fire Nation’s similar history of killing monks and destroying temples. Either way, it’s very fitting that the most militant of the four nations would have a greeting so deeply rooted in combat.

One time this man approached me in a bar talking in Spanish. So I assumed he was Spanish and we started speaking, we had a whole ass conversation and at some point he was like. So what part of Spain are you from? And I said well I’m Italian actually. What part of Spain are you from? And he was like. I’m Greek.
One time I was in Argentina and I was so tired of trying to speak Spanish because I’m not very good at it lmao so I broke into exasperated English and the retail seller girl quickly understood me and engaged me in conversation. We talked for a while, she introduced me to a makeup brand, and then I decided to buy it. While she was packaging the purchase, she asked me if I were from the US or perhaps the UK and I just said “oh no I’m Brazilian hahah” and she looked me straight in the eyes and said, in clear Portuguese, “I’m Brazilian too”
When my dad went to China on a work trip, his Mandarin speaking wasn’t great but his listening was fine (his first language is Cantonese) and he encountered a German guy who had moved to China to work. My dad knew how to speak German because he studied it in university (but wasn’t great when it came to listening to new vocab he hadn’t studied before), and the German guy knew Mandarin because he lived and worked in China, so they had a conversation where my dad spoke to the German guy in German and the guy responded in Mandarin. I’m sure it confused a lot of their coworkers who just saw the Asian guy speaking German and the white guy speaking Mandarin.
Some years ago, I worked for a manufacturing company that had a service depot in China. One of the engineers from the main office here in the US spent most of his time at the depot. The problem was that he didn’t speak *any* of the various Chinese languages, and no one at the depot spoke any English. They all, however, spoke Spanish.

I don't know how people cope without adblock. I'm at an AirBnB and using their TV to watch YouTube. First you get two ads. Then you get an intro to the video. Then you get the sponsor. Then you finally get to watch the fucking video. Then partway through the video you get six - I counted - six unskippable ads. I'm going to fucking kill somebody

My favorite human ritual is the unspoken rule that if you enjoyed a concert, you must clap without stopping at the end (if you were seated, you may rise to express further respect). The musician will bow, then exit the stage, but you must keep clapping. The musician must return and act surprised, bow again, then exit once more, and you continue to clap. Then, the musician will return and play one or two extra numbers (you stop clapping during the music) and at the end after they leave for the last time, you can clap as long as you wish but the musician will not return. It’s just such a cute song and dance. I've been to shows where the musician expects it (to the point that i could see their timer backstage that indicated how much time they had left for the show and they bowed for the first time with 20 minutes to spare) so they just go through the motion of pretending to end the show but the extra number is completely planned and we all expect it. Everyone in the audience is in on it but we all just do it anyway because it’s like a conversation were the audience and the musician are saying Thank You to each other over and over. Makes me feel some type of way
