The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.

I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

If you all will allow me a moment to analyze the competition as it exists, there's something interesting going on with the numbers.

As we all know, thanks to the support of the good people of Tumblr, Tylenol has experienced a meteoric rise to second place. Even though her competition is stiff, I believe in Tylenol's ability to go the distance.

But let's take a look at the competition:

Elmer seems to be a lovely boy. I have no qualms with Elmer, and think he would look fantastic on a beer can. But what about Elmer's campaigns? Who is the power behind the throne here, and how have they managed to find such breakout success on this competition?

A handful of wealthy donors are trying to buy this competition.

At the end of the day, all donations are good donations here. This is a charity event so every penny earned is going to help animals in need. But it's not lost on me that Elmer's current ranking is thanks entirely to a few individuals with the financial means to put their thumbs on the scale.

Tylenol's donors, comparatively, are small and numerous, mostly $1-10 donations from many passionate believers in what she stands for (autism and pain relief I think).

Overall, the donations tell a very different story than what the base ranking shows you. Elmer is held aloft by just 24 donors and bolstered by a few wealthy patrons, whereas Tylenol has won the hearts of literally hundreds of people. Even the current third place, Abby, owes her ranking to numerous small contributions rather than one or two large ones.

Tylenol is the people's princess.

lmao so in american mahjong there's joker tiles, right? wildcards. and a very rigid set of winning hands that gets updated every year by the mahjong league. for some reason.

in which set of options it is routine for there to be 'pairs' necessary to complete many or most. and for pairs, you can't use a joker. jokers are wildtiles for completing sets of three, four, or very rarely five. no pairs. no singles, either. those must be the actual specific tile, accept no substitutes.

you also can't complete a pair from other people's discards, unless that's the very last tile you need.

so it's pretty common for someone to be sitting there with a ready hand, mostly constructed, waiting on a pair, and to then either draw a joker they can't at this point use, or draw the tile the joker was filling in for, so they don't need it anymore.

at which point the joker--usually a highly valued commodity--goes in the trash.

when someone discards a joker, then, it's a sign to the rest of the table that they're nearly finished, and only need one incredibly specific thing.

this is the context necessary to understand why it was perfectly natural and reasonable when i said out loud with my mouth earlier today:
