I saw the movie Bottoms (2023) when it came out and I really loved it. I guess I was still a baby trans to some extent, but I remember finding a lesbian comedy about lesbians written by a lesbian just really fun and refreshing. I remember relating a lot to several of the characters in a way I had never really done with highschool comedies before, which, yk, makes sense, since they're lesbian characters written by a lesbian, which felt so rare in the movie world. And I was so full of hope back then for the wider queer community and my place in it.

I saw it again recently, and it kinda opened my eyes to how much jading I have been through in that time. This was a popular queer movie that was released only 3 years ago and it doesn't have a single trans character in it. The closest thing to a trans character is a choker-wearing goth Nazi proto-school-shooter that everyone hates who has like two lines, one of which is Holocaust denial??? Isn't it great that the cis lesbian writer (a "she/they" user who explicitly said she doesn't consider herself trans or NB, so I will call them cis) knows enough about contemporary queer discourse to put in a dogwhistly nod to transfemininity in the form of the meme of the violent Nazi femboy but also doesn't bother to put in any actual trans representation whatsoever?

And while three years ago I would've heard that the writer was a "she/they"-using lesbian and thought "Awesome, another Person Of Gender, with similar gender and sexuality to myself!" I am now fully and unfortunately aware that the community considers there to be two very distinct types of "she/they lesbians", and the writer of this movie is the one and I am the other, and that on the balance of probabilities that means that when they write their (all cis) characters into setting up a women's group for "female solidarity," she is perhaps deliberately using the word "female" as a dogwhistle, and she is perhaps imagining people like me being excluded from it.

And no, I'm not saying I think all cis lesbians are trans-exclusionary. But I'm saying that one who includes Nazi femboys in her queer movie with no trans characters probably is. And I'm saying that, while their use of nonstandard pronouns would've previously made me assume the best of intentions, I've had enough experience now to know that I should no longer make that assumption.

And it's so frustrating to look back on media that used to make me feel positive and included and hopeful, and get the distinct impression that, all along, in the eyes of the writer, I was never meant to relate to it. My role was to be the butt of a weak joke about how "men" who dress femininely are creepy, violent and racist, and nothing more.

No, your experience of dysphoria is not universal you absolute fucking moron. Where you see testosterone puberty as "you're gonna get strong and hairy", for us it is "you're gonna get hairy and ugly and all the wrong bits are going to get bigger and your voice is going to permanently break and yes we even literally call it breaking it and you're going to turn into the transmisogynistic caricature that media shows us is a subhuman creature, an abhorrent thing, a pest that should be killed, you will be shunned, reviled, hated, feared, rejected, shamed, alienated from the normal girlhood that you dream of, and any future womanhood made as inaccessible as possible". What you did there was like if we reduced trans boys' prospective estrogenic puberty to "you're going to get hotter and prettier". Which is also messaging that popular media gives.
