Ok but I've seen this thought about worldbuilding a lot and I absolutely hate it.

Your world doesn't need to be realistic, it needs to serve the plot.

That is its number one purpose. Nothing else. You don't need to invent the wedding rituals of the elves two continents over. It will not help your plot. In fact, it might actually restrict you.

Personally, I blame Tolkien. He invented a mythology, a map and a douzend languages for middle earth because that's the kind of nerd he was, but you don't have to do that!!! And don't listen to anyone talking about rain patterns and shit, no one cares about Mordors amount of rain days

I don't think anybody who exhaustively worldbuilds their fiction is doing it because they believe they have to. I think it's because the kind of nerd who likes to write fake encyclopedia entries is legitimately more common than the kind of nerd who likes to tell well-crafted stories.
