i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

You know, there are actual centrists who just don't want the Democratic Party to be left-wing, but I think it's dishonest to act like that's the only objection more mainstream Democrats have to DSA types. Even aside from the issue of the whole party getting smeared with attack ads about like 3 House members holding fringe beliefs, it's that a lot of these people hold beliefs that are illiberal, as in, opposed to liberal ideals. Take someone like Chevalier opposing interracial relationships ~but leftistly~. Like yeah man, liberals think it's fine for people of different races to date. It's actually inherently conservative to say otherwise. In addition, DSA types tend to support Putin, support cutting USAID, disparage gay marriage as assimilationist bullshit (and "identity politics" more broadly as a distraction from the Real Issues), present antisemitism as social justice praxis, and say women who have professional (or, god forbid, political) ambition are evil, corporate girlbosses. It doesn't matter what word games you play to pretend these are progressive positions, being an asshole about these things will make liberals dislike your crackpot candidates

It’s the same shit it’s been for years and years now. You can’t say shit like this or enable Republican victories by withholding your vote and relentlessly lying about the Democratic Party or openly say you don’t care about handing the Supreme Court to the far-right in 2016, and then cry that people hate you for being “too left." No, it’s that you’re much too similar to Republicans, not simply in enabling GOP victories, but in your reactionary bullshit.

So much of the DSA has been the proof that if someone doesn't have any actual ethical or moral framework underpinning their belief systems then you can easily get them to support anything so long as you couch it in the right vibes and vocabulary

Suddenly Russian imperialism is "Land Back," stomping on small businesses, artists and academia is "fighting the petite bourgeoisie" advocating for Islamic theocracy is "defending traditional indigenous sovereignty," lynching Jews is "combating white supremacy" and stopping terror groups from buying weapons is "neo-colonial imperialism"

Personally, I'm exhausted by their arguments about how Democrats not doing XYZ yet means that they didn't really want to, while demonstrating that they do not understand either the Constitution (there's very little a party that controls zero branches of government can accomplish) or the practical realities of pulling it off. Or, in some cases, recent history. "Why didn't Biden do [thing that he actually literally did do.]"

Government is a group project, and I don't want to be working with people who are apparently unable to share credit.

Like. Fun fact. Wanna know why Bill Clinton signed DOMA and DADT?

Because Republicans were pushing for a constitutional amendment and a law that would have made being gay in the military punishable with prison time. Clinton knew neither law would stand up to constitutional review. He also knew public support wasn't yet great enough to get protections passed.

So he chose a shitty option that could be negated over a shittier option that would have been harder to negate. "It can be overturned" was the entire point.

They can't see past the next five minutes, much less to fifteen years from now.

I have some time now, so, thoughts!

First, I want to highlight the points that I think were made well above. Sprinkledsalt makes the case, with specific examples, of DSA members espousing illiberal positions (some activists’ support of Putin, Chevalier and interracial marriage, etc). They also rightly bring up radical “leftists” withholding votes in elections and effectively giving positions to GOP politicians. Fittingoutjane also makes a great point about Democrats not being able to bring about change without being in control of government, and finally, I really like prismatic’s argument about “the long game,” although I wish I knew more about Clinton era politics (I was 1-9 years old).

A nuance I think I need to bring up:

Like any movement, the DSA folks are not a monolith and some are more reasonable than others. Some genuinely believe in “reform the police system such that mental health incidents are handled by trained professionals” while others are fully on the “literally tear down all prisons” train. As someone who knows Chevalier personally, as well as other DSA-aligned folks, I can say they’re not all like her.

Of course, one must ask, “how should DSA handle their crazy folk?” (I personally think every political movement has some number of crazy folk and the health of any movement depends on how the leadership handle them—the Black Lives Matter, the March for Science, and the March for Our Lives protests come to mind.) So far, my read of DSA’s answer is “let ‘em run hog wild.”

So, I’m skeptical of DSA’s long-term success. Which is a shame; I think we really do need stronger workers’ rights, queer rights, etc.

They complained that a 4% surtax would force the ultra-wealthy people to flee the state. It passed narrowly. Not only are these multi-millionaires NOT fleeing en masse, more of them live here now than before the tax was enacted. It raised almost two and a half BILLION dollars in 2023 alone, funding free school lunch statewide and free community college for state residents.
