Do pets tell us when they are ready to cross over
I just said goodbye to a beloved pet/friend Guido, after 14 years of his service and unconditional love. We found him literally, not figuratively but literally, starving to death in a rabbit cage at a feed store. The last thing we needed was another dog but there he was with those pleading eyes that we could not ignore. And that day marked the beginning of classroom time with little Guido.
After he crossed, the hardest part was; remembering no matter how I treated him, no matter if he got scolded for peeing on the corner of the bed or on the leg of the chair or me stepping on him when walking out of the bedroom because it was dark and I didn’t see him sitting on the floor waiting for me, he still loved me, and just took it all in stride. In retrospect, it sent me into a flurry of guilt for not being as ‘loving’ as him. He didn’t sweat the small stuff as his ‘person’ did. He lived in the moment and did not dwell on the past, well mostly. So I felt so guilty at not being the perfect person for him. Which I found out was wrong and not what he wanted. When we live in guilt and sorrow it lessens the joy of their crossing and makes it harder for them to contact us once crossed over. So please, persons, let the guilt and sorrow go, and try to think of the light, something learned instead no matter how small it is.
I had an intuitive feeling he was getting ready to go, this was a deep seated feeling that bubbled up in fear for me. So the last year of his life I subconsciously began to let him go. Lap dog was an understatement, he would sleep on me at the dinner table, on the couch, in bed, in the car, he was joined at my hip! Or was it the other way around? Either I was letting him go so HE could detach from me or I was letting him go so that when he did finally crossed the pain would be more tolerable. Maybe it was both! I do feel guilt over it and it is hard, very hard. Don’t get me wrong I was only not letting him sleep on me 24/7 and giving him a little more independence.
I have done this ‘letting go’ with Lucky, Sterling, and Aragon who are huge characters in my Dragonhorse books. Subconsciously I knew they were preparing to cross over, their jobs had been complete and I was subconsciously agreeing with them. In looking back at my actions it confirms this. But, some of the actions were out of anger and fear of having to deal with their crossing. Lucky went, on his own, and he tried a couple times before, but I wouldn’t let him. So he had to go when I was not home. I believe and most animal communicators believe, they chose how and when they go, for the most part, sometimes we interfere or sped up the process but in the end, once they are crossed it is all good! Their main concern in crossing is how we will take it.
See, they are here in service to our spiritual growth; we made a soul contract with them before we came into this lifetime. They would come in at certain times of our lives to help us. Timing is everything. Then when they have completed their contract they can go, their job was done.
Okay, back to the part of them coming in to further our spiritual growth; if we can look back on their lives no matter how it ended and how we treated them; and we can recognize a lesson learned, or an old thought process changed by our association with them, then it was as it should be. Animal communicators see the great joy in their crossing; they don’t humanize it as we do. Animal’s veil between our 3D world and the ‘otherworld’ is much, much, thinner than ours. It hast to be for them to keep on the track of their job. They must be able to constantly see the bigger picture! That is what they have taught me; too see the bigger picture and why they are truly here and why I am truly here. That has helped me tremendously, and I think I will recognize the sings faster, and the letting go will be slightly easier with this understanding with the passing of my other friends (four of them still with me).
So today I can rehash Guido’s last few weeks. He was already mostly out of his body, they do that when the end is near, it keeps them from experiencing the pain as we do. So, Guido’s last week was spent suffering from a stone in his urethra, of which we didn’t know. I took him to my vet because he was having a hard time peeing, and just seemed a little uncomfortable. Oh, let me back up a bit about signs and messages coming to us prior. Three days before I took him to the vet I was on a hike with my big dog Nico who is also in my Dragonhorse books, and I was so excited when a Merlin falcon flew down and landed on a dead tree right above me. I am a huge falcon girl and I immediately stopped to chat with him. He preened and stretched while I chatted and stayed as long as I chatted. So after a few moments I turned to finish my hike and he flew away. I had to check my books on the meaning, and did read in DJ Conway’s Animal Magick, that the Merlin Falcon brought the message of “helping the dying energetically, for a soul release before their transition to death” Well I ignored that one, and went to Animal Speaks and liked that message much better which had nothing to do with the transition of death. I posted a picture of the falcon and the message with it of my choosing on my author’s Facebook page.
So fast forwarding back to Guido; Mary my vet, took the normal UTI tests and nothing showed, so she said take him home and watch him and we scheduled for another teeth cleaning. I brought him home and there was no change. The next morning he was not going potty at all and was very, very, stressed. He was whining and even howled a few times and I panicked! Remember I am an Empath and so I feel it strongly! He was in obvious distress and pain! I took him out 3 more times praying for him to find relief but nothing. I took him in the house and shoved (he was not happy about it) part of one of Nico’s left over pain pills down his throat and then called Mary; she agreed to meet me at her office which was a forty minute drive. That was the ride from hell, my poor little friend was crying and digging in his blanket and pacing and panting, he was just freaking out! I tried to keep it together driving down the road and tried to comfort him but he was not having any of it.
So I started preparing myself for “what if I have to make that decision”. A million scenarios ran through my head. And I got loud and clear surgery was not an option, he was 14 and I was not going to put him through that! So in my mind, I allowed myself to say, “Okay, I will release him from his broken body, I will let him go if it isn’t something small that is going on with him. Yes, I think if that is what he wants I will honor his request.” As soon as I settled on my conviction I felt the warm rush of calmness fill me and my Guido immediately stopped his frenzy, got totally quiet and come over and lied in my lap the rest of the trip to Mary’s office. We both, at that very instance of my decision found peace and release.
He was so quiet in Mary’s office I don’t know if she believed me how distressed he was. She wanted to take x-rays and drain his bladder, which I let her do. He was a real trooper with it and the x-rays showed the stone in his urethra! She ran through the options, none of which I got was acceptable. I told her this was a sign and I am a believer in signs and it was his time. I told her about the car trip and she understood. She said she would have made the same decision. And so we took him out the back door of the clinic and sat on the deck overlooking the rushing Arkansas River, it was peaceful, just what we needed. I had Guido wrapped in a blanket and held him securely in my lap (his favorite place) he sat quietly, content. He was already out of his body hovering over me and I sent him the Reiki energy to help him cross, giving him my blessing, even though I sobbed uncontrollably. I called in his guides to help him cross over so he would not be alone and I felt his body relax. Mary gave me the word he was gone, it was peaceful and it was what he wanted.
I drove home with him on the seat next to me in the car telling him to go, over and over again. When we got home I put him on the couch so Nico and Frodo could say goodbye, which they did and do not seem to be mourning him. They knew already.
He is buried under a big Diva tree in my back yard. And the rest of the day I let myself grieve, in honor of his service here. I went through the gamut of emotions trying to console myself and my decision. I wanted some sort of sign that yes, what I got from him was what HE wanted.
Then falcon filled my mind and the magical attribute I chose to ignore four days prior; the message of, “helping energetically, the soul release of the dying into the transition of death”. It all made sense to me, the big AH HA had come. YES! It was as it should be. I did hear him! And that was his last lesson for me to learn from him, to listen and to be secure in what we receive no matter how hard it is. I thank him for that.
So, this morning I could not bear to put away his dish, and when I served up breakfast to Frodo I gave it to him in Guido’s bowl and said, “Frodo you can share your breakfast with Guido this morning if he needs you too.” Frodo happily ate his breakfast and left a tablespoon amount in the dish.
So to honor his service and time with me, I have made that little ritual, and found much comfort in it. I said good morning to him as soon as I woke up and said I loved him. I will keep him in my thoughts and know that he is with me as long as I need him. Safe journey little one, until we meet again across the rainbow bridge.
