I had typing classes, but they didn't help my typing at all. I was terrible at any of those Mavis Beacon sort of games, and could never make it past early levels. It was only when I started using instant messengers that I got better at typing. I think having a fun motivation and a reason to type a LOT (talking to friends, writing a story, updating a wiki for something you're passionate about) can help more than a formal class.

(Also for the longest time I only used my index fingers to type, and then moved to index plus middle, and slowly started using the rest)
