I made Hungarian mushroom soup and it's a little too delicious to be real
BUNJY RECIPE BOOK- HUNGARIAN MUSHROOM SOUP
Ingredients:
4 tbsp butter
1 large white onion, diced
16 oz white mushrooms, sliced into half-slices or diced
3 tbsp flour (gluten-free okay)
1 1/2 tbsp paprika
3 cups veggie or chicken stock
3 tbsp soy sauce
1 cup 2% milk (yes, it has to be 2%)
1/2 cup sour cream (results not guaranteed for lite version)
1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp chopped fresh dill, slightly less for dried dill
1/4 cup chopped parsley
salt and pepper
okay! so take a large saucepan and heat over medium low, and melt the butter in it. add the mushrooms and turn the heat up a notch or so and cover, stirring occasionally until the mushrooms give up their liquid. once the pot gets soupy, add the onion and put the lid back on until the mushrooms are brown and the onion is fully cooked through. once this is achieved, remove the lid and cook off most (not all!) of the liquid. at this point, add the flour and paprika TOGETHER, and mix! this will get gluey and start sticking all over the place- that's fine. cook while stirring for a few minutes, enough for the paprika to gain aroma and the flour to darken. next, add the stock and soy sauce, and stir to work all of the clumps of flour off the bottom of the pan and into the liquid. once the soup is smooth, add the milk and bring to a light boil. once the pot boils, lower to the heat to a simmer and ignore for 10 minutes. once the time is up, REMOVE THE PAN FROM THE HEAT and allow to cool slightly. once the pan is no longer scorching hot, add the sour cream and dill, and stir it in. lastly, add the lemon juice and parsley, plus salt and pepper to taste, and stir again to make it all a smooth lovely soup. serve immediately.
Turned out insanely good for Christmas dinner; been wanting to make this for so long.
It’s that time of the year again
Cruel to be kind 🥛
Just saw someone say not to call the new cancer screening algorithm "AI" because that's "just doing PR for ChatGPT" and "making it harder to criticize AI".
Sorry, if more accurate cancer screenings, developed by an organization totally separate from ChatGPT, are blasting holes in your argument, get a better argument.
I'd say any arguments that don't take into account the fact there ARE tasks LLMs can do better than humans (and which they can be trained to do without infringing on humans' creative work, even!) are flawed.
Except that cancer screening algorithm isn't even a fucking LLM. It's a different kind of machine learning algorithm entirely!
if we could bring back "machine learning" as the name for this kind of thing that would be great too honestly
On the upside, 'machine learning' is usually a pretty good green flag term that indicates that someone actually understands what the model is doing and doesn't think that it's, IDK, the singularity in progress or something.
This particular tool is an image analysis machine learning algorithm/trained neural network, just like the ones I work with. It has no grasp of language and only understands Image Of Squished Titty, so calling it an LLM -- which stands for Large Language Model, by the way -- is especially absurd.
It’s that time of the year again :)

Actual roman epitaph for a dog
humans are the same
I’ve seen this one doing the rounds a few times (and it makes me cry every time I see it), but was curious about the original Latin text, so I did some digging: it’s a shortened version of CIL 10, 00659, a tombstone from Salernum (modern Salerno, Italy). (source; CIL is the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum).
Portaui lacrimis madidus te, nostra catella,
Quod feci lustris laetior ante tribus.
Ergo mihi, Patrice, iam non dabis oscula mille
Nec poteris collo grata cubare meo.
Tristis marmorea posui te sede merentem
Et iunxi semper manib(us) ipse meis
Morib(us) argutis hominem simulare paratam,
Perdidimus quales hei mihi delicias.
Tu, dulcis Patrice, nostras attingere mensas
Consueras, gremio poscere blanda cibos,
Lambere tu calicem lingua rapiente solebas,
Quem tibi saepe meae sustinuere manus,
Accipere et lassum cauda gaudente frequenter
And here’s my translation:
Wet with tears I have carried you, our little (female) dog, just as I did in happier times fifteen years earlier (lit. “three periods of five years). For myself, Patrice, now you will not give me a thousand kisses nor will you be able to lie lovingly around/against my neck. I have sorrowfully placed you, merit-worthy, in a marble tomb and I have joined you always to myself in death, as by your cleverness you matched a human. Alas, we lost such pleasures for myself! You, sweet Patrice, were accustomed to join us at our table, to beg charmingly for food (while sitting in our) laps. You were in the habit of greedily licking our cups with your tongue, which my hands often held for you. Frequently and joyfully (you) receive a weary one with your (wagging) tail...
tl;dr: this dog was named Patrice and was very, very loved. (another translation with some glossing of the text.)
It's the fact she's joined to them in death, it's the fact that she sat in her owner's arms and ate their food. That he held the cups down for her to drink from....
Hundreds of years and we still know she was loved. We still know how she liked to sleep. All these years!! Loving dogs is the same!!!!
What
What the fuck
I have to say I love the increasing amount of tik toks made by 20-somethings that start out as pretty fair criticisms of types of people most of us meet at one point or another, but that gradually turn into surrealist horror where you’re not sure how they started anymore, and then abruptly loop back to the starting point at the end. It’s fucking surreal and I love it

This makes so much sense
This accurately displays 'running on fumes' as well. Like, once you get to, say, 5% in your tank. Still 100% of your effort. This is such an amazing visual. Even knowing that my chronic pain impacts what I can do day vs. day, seeing this visual just really helps.
