Snow and her baby brother

just a uniquely bloody late night swim
had to get them outta my system.
The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.
A humble snubnose eelpout on its way to the whale fall buffet when some nearby humans give it a quick, unintrusive study:
I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!
Ownership meant a physical copy. Now you own nothing and can't find what you want across multiple streaming platforms.
Bring back headphones that plug in. Bring back expandable memory. Bring back owning media.
This is why I can't trust 'buying' digital copies and hate that almost all videogames are like that now.
We now have to search far and wide for the few cd/dvds of other such media and it's exhausting.
Lost media is going to become a more prominent thing as more companies become 'digital only' and cancel contracts when it no longer suits their needs for any reason.
The latest reminder I can think of? She-Ra and Voltron from Netflix. Can you get every season from either show as a physical copy? Is She-Ra streaming anywhere?! These are only a couple of examples, I'm sure there are a lot more that can be named.
Media is part of our culture. It is how we express our joy, how we send messages, and it is how we invite others to think. And to devalue the sense of ownership to a fancier, longer-term version of a 'rental' - as it seems digital copies are legally allowed to do should a contract be terminated or expire - takes away the artist's and consumer's rights to share in that media.
How the system has it now should be classified as corporate stealing from consumers every single time that a digital copy disappears from that person's account/library/device. Yet the powers that be favor the cooperations.

From ancient to abstract, this one sure got around.
Japanese one made no sense to me until I finally saw the “sale sale/sasa lele” version. セール セール。 But then it’s a meme so it has to be misspelled? 🤷♂️
tHERE ARE MEMES IN THOSE HIEROGLYPHICS
Ohhhhhhh…. Chinese and greek are my favourite, but there is more!
"Grace Ryland is Rocky's dog" is such a funny fucking dynamic when you think about it
Eridians are further behind than humans technologically right? They dont have computers, relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. In fact, Eridians probably dont even know about the Big Bang because their atmosphere would filter out most of the cosmic microwave background radiation we use to detect it. On a human timeline, theyre anywhere between like early-mid 20th century. Rocky's basically a cosmonaut.
So the human civilization is pretty advanced from Rocky's perspective. Rationally he understands this. On a conceptual level he knows this to be true.
But at the same time... imagine youre one of the first ever cosmonauts to make it into space. Then you meet a 10 year old alien dog who cant do 2+2 without pulling out its calculator. It forgets everything constantly and has to keep notes everywhere, like it basically lives in Memento (2000). Also if it doesnt nap constantly it gets even stupider. And you somehow has to reconcile this with the fact that this dog has a better understanding of physics than your entire civilization does. Like the dog knows how the universe started.

The irony of this new breed of self-righteous AI hunters on AO3 is that they're all just copy and pasting peoples fics into AI detectors, which are all operated by AI and therefore THEY are feeding people's work into the algorithm without their consent and in some cases no doubt circumventing the locks people put on to avoid getting scraped...
Don't copy and paste anyone's AO3 work into third party websites, you're not the good guys in this situation?
Reblog cause FACTS
Danny who has really bad PTSD and Paranoia brought on by Vlad bugging his house. So when Danny and Jason move in together, and Jason insists on a security system, he gives Danny full control. He lets Danny pick where all the cameras go, and he links them up to Danny's phone so Danny can shut them off to feel safe if he needs to.
Everything goes fine for a while. Danny shuts the cameras down when hes having a bad day, but usually he leaves them and even seems less paranoid about them as time goes on.
But then, Danny finally convinces Jason to let them get a dog. Jason agreed so long as it was small to medium size, so of course that ment they brought home some sort of massive breed that Jason pretty sure is part wolf. Or demon. But Danny insists its a small dog, and won't grow any bigger than 36inches tall, and he looked so happy and in love with the dog that Jason just couldn't say no. At least it was well behaved-
-But after a week or so of having the dog, it started acting weird one morning. Standing the middle of the living room, they barked at the corner of the house repeatedly, not coming for food or water or to play. Finally, Danny checked out what they were looking at, and as he dug around and searched, his body started shaking in fear.
It was a camera. Not one of their, it was more high tech, smaller, and not at all where Danny placed them. Danny threw the camera on the ground, breaking it, before frantically tearing the house apart in search of more, the dog more than happy to help him search. Danny looked and relooked and checked for four hours before finally collapsing in the closet and having a panic attack.
When Jason came home to the house torn apart he freaked out and was relieved to find Danny in the closet with the dog. Though, he was worried that Danny was completely despondent and that his face was stained with tears.
When he finally got him to talk, and tell him about the cameras, Jason was pissed. He had a good idea who planted them, and he was so angry that they caused such a setback.
Jason took Danny and the dog to a hotel, watching with a tense jaw as Danny did a sweep of their room 6 times before laying on the bed and passing out.
Filled with righteous fury, Jason went back to the house, gathered up all the smashed cameras and drove straight to Wayne Manor. It was a shame, Jason hadn't been feeling the pit rage as strongly as of late, and now suddenly it was bubbling all up to a surface, and just when Jason was thinking of trying to reconnect and mabe introducing them to Danny. But now, now he kind of just wanted them all dead for setting Danny back in his healing.
Oh Jason screaming at them til his throat raw, hand twitching towards the hidden gun he forgot to leave behind in his anger.
He storms out without hearing them out, taking Danny away from Gotham for a impromptu road trip, no electronics, car completely checked right in front of Danny right before they leave.
Plot twist: It wasn't any of the Bats.
Now the entirety of Gotham's vigilantes are on the prowl for whoever tried this with one of their own.
It was Vlad. He finally found a way through Danny's security measures, he just had to use a Meta with density shifting instead of planting the bugs himself.
Vlad had been watching for ages and figured out one of Danny's triggers that caused him to turn all of their security systems off. He deliberately had Danny triggered, then set the Meta boy in there while they were out of the house. He'd told the kid some sob story about trying to get evidence of Danny being abused by his partner, so that they could get him away legally and safely and the other guy put in gaol, and the kids was more than happy to help - it's Gotham, this isn't an uncommon story told about them by outsiders.
Even more luckily for Vlad, Danny and Jason assumed that Jason's air-headed bimbo father had them installed, making the two boys leave the safety of Lady Gotham's city without any sort of electronic device or way to contact the outside world for help.
He has their safe house gassed with knock out gas and the two safely transported back to his castle with none the wiser.
And Danny doesn't kill. He always counted that as a weakness for Danny, a guarantee that he could continue to pressure him as long as he wanted.
Jason doesn't have this issue.
Cannonically.
Batman might not kill humans but he has killed vampires and aliens. So vampire-ghost looking Vlad would be overlooked as an issue for Jason to kill.
PlayStation Bad
In just the past two months, Sony has:
Said the PS6 will be more than $1000 at launch
Announced the end of all physical PS game releases
While simultaneously announcing the end of two of their console game stores — ensuring multiple games will die forever
Declared that they are wholly dedicated to (A) leveraging A.I. when making games and (B) creating live-service games above all other game types
Announced that if you bought any movies through their PlayStation Store, over 550 of them will soon be deleted from all users' libraries — with no restitution offered of any kind
Gamers, it is time — to paraphrase Robert Vann — to turn Sony's picture to the wall. Any one of these insults would be bad, and taken alone? Maybe it could be swallowed. But this is an ongoing campaign of disdain towards customers, with each declaration worse than the last.
PlayStation does not deserve your patronage any longer. The PS6 must fail. Leave them behind.
Do you guys remember the original Xbox One announcement? Where all games would only have one installation before the disc became useless, the console had to be always online to function, and would be constantly listening to the room around it?
Remember how it got clowned on so badly that the person in charge resigned on disgrace and they did a full 180 on everything they had committed to?
Those were good times.
