I think we need to talk more about how Christianity can become intertwined with someone’s mental illness, and about how harmful it is that Christians will tell mentally ill people that we just need to focus more on God.

I have GAD with mild OCD. I have experienced compulsions, intrusive thoughts, etc. that are religious in nature. I have compulsions related to my fear of demons. Christianity made my mental health problems worse.

My uncle has severe, undiagnosed bipolar disorder. He has experienced religious delusions. Religious delusions are one of the most common types of delusions.

Christians often encourage mentally ill people to just focus more on God, and even tell us that our illness is a result of a “lack of faith”. This makes us sicker. For many of us, Christianity makes us sicker.

also maybe (emphasis on maybe) i'm being nitpicky but i really hate how ableism on this site primarily revolves around the experiences of able-bodied neurodivergents. i see posts about "ableism" that seem to be talking about the general concept but...there's no mention of physical disability at all despite the intent of the post making one think that'd at least be necessary to acknowledge. ime the topic of ableism against able-bodies neurodivergents apparently gets way more attention and exposure on this site than ableism against physically disabled people. like, not to make the able-bodied neurodivergents uncomfortable but physically disabled people still exist, we see how you talk about ableism, and many of us are neurodivergent too :/
