rent-lowering gunshot time. i think a reflexive anti-AI stance can be reactionary because there are legitimately good use cases for the technology in scientific research, although it is often overhyped. i also think most people use AI in incredibly stupid ways

unfortunately it’s not that simple. generative AI can be used to design new drugs for hard-to-treat diseases. analytical AI can pose data privacy risks and worsen bias in policing (and analytical AI is only as reliable as the data it processes).

it’s better to describe a model by what it does rather than what it is.

My understanding of the positive uses of AI is that the instances where it's genuinely helpful are extremely specific. If you train it on very specific data and give it exact parameters to follow, it does perfectly fine and can save a ton of time. For example, my dad works with a software company and they have a huge library of support tickets and manuals on how their software works. It would be incredibly useful to train an AI on those support tickets and the manuals, so that when clients reach out with a problem, the AI can sort through the requests and send any with a common problem to the right set of instructions on what to do. This can free up a ton of work for tech support to let them focus on the more complicated or new problems that need more attention.

For generative AI, you can train it on your own art to do things like add a small detail on each frame of an animation, which takes a lot of time and effort off the animator's plate to focus on other aspects that would be harder if not impossible for an AI.

I think these are perfectly reasonable and even good uses of AI, and they would be extremely helpful! But those uses are for specific people and businesses and specific circumstances and areas, and they're not really exciting or flashy - which I don't personally find to be a negative, but the people pushing AI are pushing it to make money, and you can't make all the money in the world forever by only pitching to a few specific industries and businesses: EVERYONE HAS to have it and it HAS to be able to do EVERYTHING

which it very demonstrably cannot, and trying to make it do everything has made its shortcomings and flaws VERY apparent, and then covering up those very apparent flaws and shortcomings and trying to browbeat everyone into agreeing that it can do everything and therefore you HAVE to use it for everything has launched us straight into the torment nexus and now we're all in Hell.

Still thinking about how Grace was always treated as disposable. Kicked out of his passion field for his bluntness—underpaid as a (very good) teacher, to the point he can’t afford a car—left alone in a room full of argon with a sample that might kill him, while all the indispensable guys who put him there stood on the other side of the glass and watched. Shoved screaming into a mission that would kill him. And then, then this bonkers little alien who just met him gladly trades years off his life (via extended return mission) to save him. Runs burning through deadly air to keep him from dying. Chooses finally to weave their lives together forever and recreate Grace’s best dreams of Earth to make him happy. No wonder Grace told Rocky he doesn’t have to get him a gift, he’s given him everything. To one little spider guy, Grace is irreplaceable. That’s love.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo [which ended the Mexican/American war, and annexed the territory which became the Southwest of the United States, aka Aztlán] is an important document. Other than the Native Americans no other people living within the boundaries of this country have a formal treaty with the U.S. government concerning the treatment of its people by the government. Articles III and IX of the document concern the treatment of Mexicans remaining in the territory after occupation by the U.S. Significantly, Article X, which guaranteed protection and validity of "all prior and pending titles to property of every description" was deleted by the U.S. Senate before the Treaty was ratified. (Acuna, pg. 28-29) The treaty would again become important in the history of the Chicano people in the late 1960's when the Alianza Federal de Mercedes would demand a return of land taken after the war to those holding rightful deeds.

but if I were to say that I don’t think vampires inherently and universally represent queerness and that if that’s the only way you engage with any story containing a vampire then a lot of very important messages are going to go straight over your head? i would be killed to death.

ESPECIALLY an issue when vampires very explicitly represent fear of outsider immigrant non-white invaders! Dracula can absolutely be read with a queer lens but we cannot let our desire for ~spooky gay stuff~ blind us to the very real xenophobia, antisemitism, and orientalism present in a LOT of the foundational media in vampire history! nor the racism present in modern vampire stories!!!

I'm glad the facial expressions are coming across accurately! It can feel so absurd to say gosh I hope the torment maze removes some fire and rusty nails soon, but alas, sometimes that's all one can do.
