“Odker” Elementary writers had us since the sTART
this show in a nutshell tbh.
Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller’s IG photos from the set of Elementary (2012-2019)
interesting that Elementary and Person of Interest both took on the “powerful billionaire responds to tragedy by developing mass-surveillance technology to prevent violence, does it by enacting violence upon the future perpetrators” and went completely different directions with it.
There are a lot of similarities between Odin Reichenbach and Harold Finch - both powerful men who took action after witnessing an awful tragedy. Both then chose to use their own money, skill, and resources to build a mass-surveillance network that would make a police state drool and use it to prevent crime. Both have people in law enforcement on their side. Both employ mercenaries to enact the violence to prevent that crime. Where they differ, really, are how they enforce their ideals – and how the violence is framed and how the writers justify it.
PoI argued that mass-surveillance technology like the Machine is inherently neutral, or at least not inherently bad; being given a semblance of self-awareness, it can be made to act ethically, can be taught ethics, can even evoke empathy. In the wrong hands (the government), it will be exploited and abused, so Harold makes sure the government can only use it for one designated purpose (preventing terrorism). In the right hands (Team Machine) it can be used to save lives, and that justifies its existence because we’re assured it will never be used the wrong way. While Team Machine definitely use extreme measures to prevent extreme means, the narrative reassures us that they’re the ultimately the good guys. Morally complex, struggling with their own past, making peace with their redemption, but ultimately they are the right people to take on this task of being the watcher and keeper of everyone’s safety.
This, of course, is a narrative decision: Reese’s actions (and later Shaw) on behalf of Harold are just because Harold is presented to be a just character, never acting for his own benefit, and always for the betterment of other people. His character is a fantasy, the kind of tech creator we want tech creators to be - selfless, empathetic, philanthropist who is uncompromisingly kind, so that despite holding so many lives in his hands, we can trust that he will never deliberately abuse it. But this is a way to deliberately justify the narrative thesis; we know now (as we should have known then) that this was never the case. Tech billionaires are never, and have never been, Harold Finch.
And so, Elementary asks a fundamental question that PoI only assumes - who are the right hands? Who gets to decide that? What kind of person would be able to create something so powerful, and how did they amass that power to do so in the first place? Reichenbach comes on the heels of many powerful season-spanning mastermind antagonists - he’s framed to be essentially in the same league as Moriarty, Moreau, and Morland, but with a god-complex kind of self-righteousness. He might have good intentions, but his means cannot be justified. What Elementary tells us is that Odin Reichenbach is not monstrous just because he uses violence and surveillance to prevent crime – but that because in order to get to his position, a certain degree of monstrosity was required.
Person of Interest argues that monstrous people can create monstrous technology, but that mass-surveillance in itself is not evil - this was their thesis behind the battle between The Machine and Samaritan in the last 3 seasons.
Elementary, meanwhile, argues that someone who has the means, resources, money, and will to create a mass-surveillance network would have to be monstrous. Odin Reichenbach might present himself as an ultimate saviour of humanity, but he’s really just another capitalist who kills for profit; he’s not above the other villains of the week who do so, but he’s got an international tech conglomerate.
One reason, I think, is timing. When PoI premiered in 2011, it was before we gained a massive distrust of technology, and how it put us at risk. Person of Interest was developed and came out before the Cambridge Analytica scandal, before Mark Zuckerburg testified in front of Congress, before YouTube algorithms became a recruiting weapon for the alt-right, before helper systems in our home were revealed to be surveillance tools for their manufacturing companies.
Meanwhile, in Elementary’s final season in 2019, we’re constantly becoming more and more wary of how our personal information is being used, who uses them, and how they manipulate what we see. We’ve come to distrust tech conglomerates and start-up CEOs, come to rethink the way they weasel into our lives.
Both shows feature redemption as a key theme in its story arcs, and I think Person of Interest was phenomenal when it premiered in 2011. However, the pace of rapidly changing technology has already made its thesis look outdated as a concept. We can no longer take in good faith that big tech CEOs are out to look out for the little guys - we’ve seen too much evidence otherwise.
Elementary’s last season presents the counterargument for today, together with the central theme that Elementary has always featured at its heart; change and self-improvement. We’ve seen this span character arcs and relationship arcs, we’ve seen this in one-off episodes and season-spanning stories. No one is quintessentially beyond redemption, and everyone should be given a chance. Anyone who assumes it from a distance cannot be trusted to decide the fate of others.
As a detective procedural, Elementary essentially had to rely on a flawed judicial system and asks us to trust an unjust establishment. But in comparison of other detective procedural shows, it’s still beautiful sign-off for its last season, I think.
I beg for a couple minutes of your time to read this.
This isn’t a massive topic in international news (yet), but Hong Kong may be passing an amended extradition law that would allow the Chinese government to come to Hong Kong to arrest people or even confiscate their property, through Extradition Requests. The reason why this is terrible for HK is because HK and China currently use “one country, two systems”. It means that while technically the two are in the same country, there are 2 different (legal) systems used. HK has freedom of speech, China does not. HK also has a much higher rule of law ranking than China.
If this law is passed, mainland Chinese authorities will be able to arrest people in HK on trumped-up charges. They’ve already taken our people because they didn’t like the things some of them did. For example, a bookstore owner in HK was kidnapped by the Chinese authorities because he sold books that were banned in mainland China. Imagine how much worse this situation would be if arresting people in HK became legal for Chinese authorities?
This is a threat to the HK system and freedom of speech in HK. 30 years ago on June 4, there was a protest in Beijing, China. Most of the attendees were students, who were fighting for democracy, freedom of speech and greater accountability from the higher-ups in the government. Several hundred to over thousands of participants were killed by the Chinese military with assault rifles and tanks. This is now called the Tiananmen Massacre. It is now censored in mainland China, and just the mention of the Tiananmen Massacre can lead to the person getting arrested or even killed. It’s been entirely erased from their history, and most young people do not know that it happened. There aren’t any more protests in mainland China because this is what happens if they do; they have been silenced by their government. HK is the only city on Chinese soil with the ability to talk about this tragic event, and we hold a vigil every year on June 4 to speak out against the Chinese government and how they refuse to acknowledge this event. If this law were passed, HK would be silenced as well, and the Tiananmen Massacre would be entirely wiped from history within China.
The reason why this needs greater international attention is that it isn’t just a matter of HK lives. There are hundreds of thousands of expats living in HK, with a great number of international businesses and tourists within the city. If any one of them says or does something that the Chinese government doesn’t like, the government could make up trumped-up charges to pin on them then take them to mainland China, where who knows what would happen to them. Everyone in HK’s life and safety is threatened. HK, as we know and love, would die.
If you’re still reading this, I sincerely thank you. On June 9, there will be rallies going on around the world in the cities mentioned in the below pic. I urge you to participate if this is something you sympathize with if possible. The best way to help would be to generate international attention. Stand with HK, and help us keep our people safe.

Interviewer: Oh my goodness, this is a real relationship. It’s an intergalactic bond filled with superpowers.
Quien sabe. Siempre se aprende algo 😉

I believe he also now has a library card.
I know that his name is a reference to the MERL, and obviously the wizard, but I also hope that it is a deliberate reference to leading bat expert Merlin Tuttle.
unpopular opinion but it’s cool if you don’t want to be in love
like, idk. I used to feel so compelled to make excuses for being single, whether it was self-deprecating jokes about myself or insisting that I was too busy for a relationship or making myself go out on uncomfortable and pointless dates just to make a show of trying to not be single. there’s such an expectation that if you’re single you should be actively working of changing that, and it’s like. nah. there are 9999 other things you can be focusing your time and energy on and if you don’t really feel like being in a relationship now or ever that’s cool.
I wonder what Christian meme groups are like. I mean some Christians have the biggest victim complexes in the world and if you couple that with first person perspective memes, you’d probably get memes like:
Oh thank fuck it is my time to shine
These are all from a Christian meme group that I joined for some reason but fell in love with
I’ve been consuming Christian memes since I was about fourteen and they’re all like this. Also:
May I add:
ok i spent hours looking through christian discord servers for these
Some personal favorites I’ve encountered
I’m not sure if any of these count as blasphemy exactly but happy sunday yall.
I am currently in church and can confirm that most of these do qualify as blasphemy. But, they also qualify as funny so…

Walking along the shore
Always walk barefoot. Take off your shoes. The beach wants to read your soul.
If you come across a starfish, tell him about your deepest desire. He will point you in the right direction.
A dog might run up to you when you are all alone on the beach. Let him walk with you for a while.
Sand is the combination of sea and land. In ancient times, the sea gods and land gods used to meet here. Sometimes they still do.
Mermaids are real. You might not see them but they see you.
If you see baby sea turtles hatch, keep your distance and keep an eye out for predators. Help them make it to the sea. You will receive a favor.
If something is calling you from far out at sea, ignore it. Keep walking.
The waves wash away bad feelings. Place both hands over your heart and put the feeling inside your hands. Carefully place it on the sand, close enough to the sea so the waves can reach it. The waves will grow stronger for a few minutes. Thank the waves.
Pick up a shell and hold it close to your ear. Shell spirits love telling stories. Especially about Charles, a fisherman who has been living on his rowboat for over 70 years and has not set foot on land ever since. They love him.
An island might appear out of nowhere and slowly grow closer. You are not imagining it.
Heed the seagulls’ warning.
Pick up some seaweed and bring it back home. It is a key ingredient in many potions.
I am currently rowing toward the island but the waves are growing more and more violent. Something does not want me near. - Bob
