Changbin: (standing, very serious) the prosecution would like to call the defendant to the stand.

Han: (sitting innocently) I don't know what you're talking about.

Changbin: there were dumplings in this fridge. labelled. with my name on them, in marker, very clearly.

Han: marker isn't a binding contract

Changbin: it is when it's MY marker and MY name.

Chan: (acting as judge, banging a spoon on the table) Order. Order in the dorm.

Han: your honor, I plead delicious.

Changbin: that's not a plea.

Chan: (considering it) I'm going to allow it, honestly, those dumplings did sound good.

Changbin: you're supposed to be NEUTRAL

Chan: I contain multitudes.

SCENARIO: Dorm Living Room, Movie Night

[Minho is settled against Jisung's chest, the little spoon. Both are rigid, barely breathing.]

Hyunjin: (sketching them furiously) The visual... the tension... it's art.

Chan: (face buried in his hands) They've been like that for an hour. The movie is a documentary about glaciers.

[I.N. leans in, his face hovering between Jisung & Minho.]

I.N: If you don't confess before the credits roll, I'm changing the Wi-Fi password to "JustKissAlready123."

Jisung & Minho: (simultaneously, in a small, shaky voice) ...Noted.

I.N: (standing on the couch) I declare this an independent nation! I.N.-land!

Felix: I'll be Minister of Snacks! (throws confetti made from chip crumbs)

Chan: (from the doorway) I am the UN sanctions. Turn off the lights and go to bed. Nationhood revoked.

Lee Know: (to Chan) You always ruin the fun.

Chan: (to Lee Know) And you were totally about to be the Minister of Assassinations. Don't think I didn't know.

Lee Know: (already ordering) The illusion of choice is important for group morale.

Han: Wow, look at the colors.

Lee Know: [Not looking at the sunset, looking at Han] Yeah. Golden.

Han: [Turns, catches him staring] What?

Lee Know: [Reaches over, tucks a flyaway hair behind Han's ear] Nothing. Just matching the view.

Han: [Hides his face in his hoodie, muffled] You can't just say things like that.

I.N: [sitting next to them, sighs like a tired kid] Are you two done? Can we please go home so that I can get away from this?

(In the kitchen. Something is burning)

Felix: (Holding a smoking pan) I have achieved... darkness.

Han: (Waving a towel at the smoke alarm) It's not darkness, it's carbon! You've reverse-engineered a chicken into a fossil fuel!

Hyunjin: (Tearing up, but it's unclear if it's from emotion or smoke) It's art. It's a statement on the circle of life.

Lee Know: (Walks in, opens the window, takes the pan, and scrapes the contents directly into the trash) The statement is "order chicken." The art is my clean kitchen. Everyone out.

Chan: (From the doorway, holding a fire extinguisher) I was ready to be a hero...

Lee Know: Your heroism is appreciated. Now go heroically call for jajangmyeon

Han: Do I look okay?

Lee Know: (Looks him up and down slowly) You look like you. Which is the problem. You'll distract everyone.

Han: (Blushing furiously) That's not an answer!

Seungmin: (From the next table, not looking up) I'm trying to read. Please keep your creative flirting to a dull roar.

Setting: In the car, stuck in traffic.

Chan: (White-knuckling the steering wheel) Okay, team. New strategy. We abandon the vehicle and proceed on foot. We'll use the sewers.

Han: The sewers? What are we, teenage mutant ninja idols?

Felix: (Eyes wide) I call dibs on being the cool one with the weapons.

I.N: I don't want to be a rat. Can I be a brave little turtle instead?

Seungmin: (Looking up from his book) The average sewer system contains enough bacteria to-

Everyone: SEUNGMIN, NO.

Lee Know: (Takes out his phone) I've already mapped the quickest subterranean route to the dorm. It passes by three feral cat colonies. We're stopping.

Lee Know: (Watching Han fail a spin for the tenth time) Your body has a personal vendetta against centrifugal force.

Han:(Dizzy, stumbling) It's betraying me!

Lee Know:(Catches him, hands firm on his waist) Obviously. It's coming to me instead. Smart body.

I.N:(Stretching nearby, eyes wide) Are you two going to kiss or is this a new correction technique? I need to know if I should look away.

1. Family Breakfast Chaos

Han (Dad): Why is everyone staring at me like I committed a crime?

Hyunjina (Mom): Because you used my mug.

Han: That's... not a crime.

Uncle Seungmin: It is when she's already mad at you for other reasons.

Auntie Lina (Seungmin's wife): Don't drag us into your marital crimes, darling.

Hyunjina: Oh I will absolutely drag everyone into this.

Grandma IN: I leave for five minutes and suddenly it's a courtroom.

Grandpa Felix: I just wanted toast.

Han: (Bouncing back to the dorm with the tiny trophy) Look! I won! I'm a champion!

Lee Know: (Examines the plastic trophy) It says "Participant."

Han: A champion participant!

Lee Know: (Sets it on the shelf next to his cats' "#1 Critter" ribbon.) Fine. It can live here. Don't let it give the cats a complex.

Han: You're displaying it!

Lee Know: I'm displaying order. Everything has its place. You. There. (Smirks and points to the spot next to him on the couch.) Your place is here, champion participant.

Felix: (Clapping) That's so sweet!

Changbin: THE DESIGNATED SPOT. THE DOMESTIC RITUAL. THIS IS PEAK.

I.N: Can my participation trophy from third grade live there too?

Okay. So, whenever I talk to my non-shadowhunters friends about malec, they immediately go “Oh, they are the gay couple right?” or “You guys are super into the gay couple” or “You people really like the gay ones, huh”. 

It is true. My fandom is super “into the gay couple”. But I just want to make it clear that malec is so much more than ‘just a gay couple’. I am so glad that the LGBT community has malec, because honestly it is so hard to find healthy, non-stereotyped portrayals of same-sex relationships on TV.

Even though the fandom is super into malec ( I mean SUPER INTO THEM) it is not just because of their sexuality. We just don’t like them because they are gay.

Just so you people who don’t watch the show know, malec is so much more to us. Alec Lightwood taught us to believe in ourselves, to protect our families, to be true to ourselves and not to be afraid to chase our dreams. Magnus Bane taught us that we are more than our past, to be there for our friends no matter what and to be fabulous, always. 

Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane are so much more than ‘just the gay couple’. They are the Head of the Institute and The High Warlock of Brooklyn. 

Please stop reducing people to their sexuality.
