Making a Fabric Headband Step-by-Step
Start by picking your fabric—look for something soft and stretchy, like jersey knit or a cotton blend. Choose a fabric that feels comfortable and has enough give to fit nicely. Then, cut a strip of your fabric to the desired width and length for your headband. The length should be enough to wrap around your head comfortably with a little overlap. Next, fold the fabric strip and sew the edges together to create a tube. Use a straight stitch for durability. Turn the tube right side out, so the seam is inside. Finally, stretch the headband around your head to check the fit and make adjustments if necessary. Your fabric headband is ready to wear or give as a handmade gift.
Measure the distance around your head where the headband will sit. Then, cut a piece of fabric that is 3 to 4 inches wide. Make sure this strip is about 2 inches longer than your head measurement.
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. Pin along the long edge to secure it.
Sew along the pinned edge, sewing a 1/4 inch seam. Make sure to keep the stitches even. Leave both short ends open and unstitched.
Turn the tube right side out and then press it flat with an iron. Once it’s turned, smooth out the fabric to remove creases. To close the ends, tuck in the raw edges on both sides. Pin them securely in place, then sew the ends shut.
Fold the headband in half lengthwise. Give the middle a single twist. Sew it to keep the twist in place. Try on the headband to see how it fits. Adjust the size if it feels too loose or tight, either by adding elastic or taking in the seams. Once it feels just right, your fabric headband is ready to wear.
