It’s like in the great stories, my Frodo. The ones that really mattered… and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? But, in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass.

This beautifully embellished gown, decorated with distinctive appliqués resembling ears of wheat, was most recently seen in the 2022 Netflix adaptation of 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒖𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏, where Yolanda Kettle wore it as Elizabeth Elliot. But that was far from its first appearance. Years earlier, the gown appeared in the 1996 ITV adaptation of 𝑬𝒎𝒎𝒂, worn by Lucy Robinson as the flamboyant Mrs. Elton during the strawberry-picking scenes at Donwell Abbey. Costume designer Jenny Beavan’s choice of the gown for the scene may well have been inspired by its especially “fruitful” decoration. The costume likely originated even earlier, having probably been created by costume designer Charles Knode for the 1972 BBC adaptation of 𝑾𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒆, where it debuted on Alison Frazer as Princess Liza Bolkonskaya. The gown’s unusual design recalls “Madonna of the Wheat” imagery first associated with a sculpture in the Milan Cathedral around 1400. Over the centuries, this artistic motif inspired numerous sculptures and paintings depicting the Madonna in gowns adorned with wheat stalks and radiant wheat-burst — or even sunburst — collars. It seems very likely that one of these historic artworks served as inspiration for this remarkable costume design.
