I never thought I'd have someone beg me to take them back after they:

told me they wish they had never slept with me because I enjoyed it

broke up with me without saying they were breaking up, instead making me say it because they were too nervous to

texted me twice in the whole year after the breakup, both times just to "reconnect" and "become friends again"

So apparently all of that "reconnecting" was them hoping to get to the same commitment level we were at before we broke up, and I just had FIVE HOUR CONVERSATION about how I would not be "investing in them as a partner"

my close friend from uni was a cis girl who had the audacity to wear pants and cut her hair short and like nobody at this school, a place OBSESSED with ‘respecting everyone’s gender identities,’ would call her ‘she.’ after MONTHS of this she started wearing a fucking pronoun pin to work and i dont even think that fixed it. me, im sorta androgynous; i have shaggy self-cut hair and go by a neutral name, but i always say my pronouns are she/her, and people ive worked with for months and have introduced myself in front of fifty times will STILL reflexively say ‘they’ for me. i respect the progressive circles i run in, but this IS evidence of misogyny. people’s definition of “woman” or “girl” is so narrow and high-maintenance that even the tiniest deviation from the norm gets you forcibly defeminized. but it’s a compliment, right? like who would wanna be a girl anyway?

This actually pisses me off so much, because I experience this on a daily basis. Now I am a nonbinary person, but my pronouns are she/her and it/its. The way people will ignore that information because I'm androgynous and opt for "they" makes me so angry. Just because I look neutral and am neutral doesn't mean you get to decide my pronouns for me!!

maybe I'm just a boring he/him white guy but inventing about 7 trillion terms to define "man" and "woman" so you can reinforce gender essentialism isn't very "love is love" of you. maybe i just don't have a sexuality but picking and choosing what sexualities are normal and which ones are "weird and predatory" sounds like we're all a bunch of republicans on fox news. if you attend your local pride parade and look REAAALLLYYY closely, you'll notice you can't actually tell if someone's gay or not from their appearance, and there's no way to know if they're "invading queer spaces". maybe it's just me, but when i attended my local gaybar last night for the drag show, they didn't ask for my gay-card with a peer reviewed diagnosis of faggot stamped on it. they just let me in the building. i live a life of bliss and luxury in not caring about any queer discourse ever, and just going "WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY :-)" while booting up the latest cod game. and it seems much more fun than whatever the fuck you people are on about

Hi! I saw butchvaporeon's response to your post & I wanted to offer some additional perspective. I'm messaging you directly instead of replying to the comment because I don't want to start argumentative discourse on your vulnerable post. Feel free to not respond to this if replying doesn't serve you.

For context - I'm a butch trans masc they/them who has taught sex ed in a conservative US state for over ten years. There was a time when I dressed very traditionally feminine. I cautiously used the word butch before feeling comfortable enough to own what that meant to me - dressing more masculine, cutting my hair, becoming engaged to another trans masc person.

There are always going to be people who build barriers around identity labels. You can decide if you subscribe to that or not. No one person owns the label "butch" & there will always be different definitions and uses that will be specific to someone's cultural context.

I don't understand butchvaporeon's definition of butchness, and (frankly) I would argue that saying that butches ignore what any men think of their life disregards the historical overlap between the butch and trans masc community. The idea that valuing hard work is inherently a part of butch identity is also extremely out of left field for me, and I'm curious how tied in to white protestant capitalistic definitions of "work" that value is. But, again, everyone has an opinion, and their definition might be accurate for their community & culture.

Labels are useful when they validate experiences, provide community, and remind you that you're not alone or broken. I hope you believe and trust the latter.

The term is growing on me for sure, but it's very hard to separate the idea of "butch" in my head compared to how I feel connected to it (as a way to relate to the femme community). So in a way, yes, the label validates how I feel about my fellow lesbians and the type of person I want to be viewed as, even if I don't necessarily look the part traditionally.

Genuinely this was very helpful to hear, and I hope you know that you've made an impact on this young queer's life :)

theres a phenomenon that happens on here i have been calling "normalize loving parents posting" which is when you spend a lot of time on tumblr and are exposed to a lot of one specific counter-cultural narrative day in and day out until you start to forget what the dominant ideas are for most of the human population and thus feel the need to "defend" things that are widely accepted and popular. it's called this because of the time a bunch of text posts about shitty dads were circulating and then people with good relationships with their dad didn't feel included enough and started making "uhmmm can we normalize loving parents? not everyone has a deadbeat dad, MY dad is great" type posts, seemingly forgetting that good relationship with dad is a cultural norm that is expected and encouraged. i think its good practice, especially when im annoyed, to stop before i hit the post button and ask myself if this is a real issue or if im normalize loving parents posting. because often im about to try to normalize loving parents

I only wear skirts

Reason I might be a butch:

I love femmes

I don't/can't pass for straight (aka I'm gnc)

I have short hair

I have lots of body hair
