I love how they can disarm each other this way. (see this post) That one of them will be enraged and out for blood but the other can just pull him back, place a hand on his chest, make eye contact, and just stop him. Then walk him out and away.

but dean has been pining & waiting 4 this exact moment 4 years & so sam has 2 watch as dean absolutely goes 4 it w/o a 2nd thought, immediately says yes w/o a hint of doubt

one real interesting thing about supernatural season one episode twenty “dead man’s blood” is the appallingly direct parallels drawn between sam and dean and the pair of vampire lovers. john puts kate in a chokehold and demands that luther hand over the colt:

this is objectively insane. even the framing of the two shots is similar. what were they trying to accomplish with this?? because what the actual fuck. are you saying that sam and dean are literally in love??? that they mate for life???? that they’re unconditionally deovted to each other????? i’m listening!!!!!!
it’s not even the first time we get a Dean-as-Luther / Sam-as-Kate parallel - the very first time we meet the vamp power couple, it’s Kate offering up Elkins’ murder and the resulting plunder as a gift for Luther, who instead is pissed at the attention it might draw to them:
KATE: I did it for you, for what he did to your family. LUTHER: Revenge isn’t worth much if you end up dead.
which of course is a tidy, almost on-the-nose summation of the theme whose variations are going to ricochet through the entire s1 finale: which are you willing to drop, revenge for your dead loved ones or the lives of the loved ones you’ve got left?
and it’s not JUST Sam and Dean, although it always comes back to them… it’s John thinking he can spare his sons by making his revenge quest into a suicide mission, it’s Sam and Dean finally presenting a united front against their dad to convince him they’ll have a better shot as a team, it’s “this thing goes south, just get the hell out,” it’s Meg calling John up to say “give me the gun or I keep killing your friends,” it’s Meg calling his sons up to say “you’re never going to see your father again” in order to bait a trap for the gun; hell, in a distorted way, it’s Meg’s brother-demon being willing to shoot her just to test if the gun is real. it’s the big fight between Sam and Dean, it’s Dean calling it that John is possessed not only because his dad praised him but because he praised him for sticking to the “wrong” answer, it’s John begging Sam to shoot him, it’s “no sir, not everything.” it’s John realizing on Dean’s deathbed which of them actually stands a chance of keeping Sam off the demon’s chosen path for him, and only then - only then - trading the gun and his own life for the life of the son he’d always taken for granted.
and fittingly enough, although the scripted dialogue above is almost too tidy as a Sam/Dean parallel, the underlying dynamic of their interaction is more John-as-Luther and Dean-as-Kate: she presents him an offering made out of devotion that nevertheless isn’t in step with his answer to the central question, and it’s like her entire sense of self is yanked out from underneath her by his dismissal and rebuke. later she’ll be the one he sends out to entrap the Winchesters in the same scene where John uses Dean as bait. but before that, the roles shift again, and the entire vampire clan’s treatment of the two human captives mirrors the way John’s treatment of Sam and Dean will be mirrored by Azazel in Devil’s Trap: the placating one gets contemptuously disposed of, the defiant one gets singled out for respect and recruitment.
sorry, this is a lot of words that may or may not sound like arguing when really it’s more like i’m trying to yes-and the original point. Sam and Dean dropping the quest and saving each other instead = what it keeps coming back to, in a more complicated way that still really is that brutally simple. and the parallel in the shots above absolutely is just that pointed and deliberate… but it’s also part of a larger whole of all the ways Dead Man’s Blood is a kaleidoscope made of funhouse mirrors that prefigure the whole s1 finale. i’m obsessed with it. sheila o'malley lost her ENTIRE MIND over it. SPN 1x20 really is That Bitch.
