“Oh here…lemme help you.” These were words Izzy usually uttered while hovering over everything from sprained ankles to collapsed lungs. In this case, she was saying it to an individual doing battle with the persnickety vending machine in the main lobby. Their snack lay tragically stuck in the metal coil, halfway to falling. “Now don’t go telling anyone I showed you the secret way to make this machine behave. It’s not knowledge I share with just anyone.” Most people would begin to kick or shake the machine, but Izzy drops down to a squat and focuses on the door flap. She pushes it in and up as far as she can, then let’s it go with a snap. A second time the action is repeated. Then a third. And then thwack, the snack comes down. With a triumphant grin she collects it, offering it to the snacker in distress. “The air in these things is weird. Apparently doing this creates suction or something, I’m not sure about the mechanics. Doesn’t work if your snack is stuck on the very edges on either side, but it works like a charm for the middle items.”
Following a checkup with his doctor that resulted in good news, but a lecture on his smoking and drinking, James really needed a snack. All he wanted was a bag of Cheetos from the vending machine -- a task that should’ve been much easier than it was proving to be. As he shook the machine gently, he let out a groan of annoyance when the stubborn snack was proving to be winning against him. As he struggled, he heard an unfamiliar voice offering to help and looked over curiously at the brunette. “Your secrets safe with me. I just really want my Cheetos,” he said with a laugh, scooting back and watching her go to town on the machine. Her method was different from what he was going to try, but after a few attempts, down dropped the bag. He smiled at her, grabbing the bag from her hand. “Thank you. Something tells me you have to mess with this machine a lot. Do you work here?” He asked her curiously.
