thinking about how as an adult I have been able to meet gay children for the first time (there were no out gay children or teenagers in my town when I was growing up that I was aware of) and how i am noticing new types of best friends develop. my favorite is "tween/teenage trans girl and the lesbian/transmasc/nonbinary afab kid who constantly bodyguards her and circles her protectively" i have seen this type of bestfriends many times now and sometimes i tell them and they giggle and go that's us !! and i tell them, we didn't used to be able to be together and now we are. and i am so lucky to be able to see it.

not knowing i was aroace as a kid and was also obsessed with cats was so funny. kids were like "youre going to grow up to live alone as a crazy cat lady" and i was like
the thing with the whole "well trans men have male privilege thing" is firstly. literally no. but even if you take the example of the "stealth trans guy who passes extremely well so people see him as a cis guy" is that he still has to hide his identity to access that privilege and if someone finds out hes trans that privilege is most likely to be taken away. so it isnt really privilege.

Something that annoys me is the constant whining about "more queer spaces, more queer communities" but then they're immediately like "yeah! And we need ones that don't cost money or require a purchase!"
Girl that's exactly why they close down after a year. You NEED money to keep these places open. There's no magic Gay Money Pot with endless cash to keep these places open. It requires YOU to put your money where your values are!!
Like there was a queer coffee shop in my city. Owned and operated by a bunch of LGBT people. Not a cishet on the schedule. Tons of young people raved about it.
And it made it about 2 years before shutting down completely. Because all those young people who begged for a place exactly like this would just show up, not buy a single thing, and leave. You cannot build a community without putting your money into it. This isn't about capitalism, this is just reality. You can't open a restaurant where no one buys your food. You can't have a gay bar that only serves 5% of the population and actively excludes everyone else. This is what I mean when I say people confuse "community" and "friend group." You're not obligated to spend money when hanging out with your friend group. But if you want a lasting community centered space, you need to open up that wallet.
To take a slightly different track here, I do actually think that community spaces that don't require a purchase are a good thing and we should have them!
But we can't expect them to look exactly like spaces that do require a purchase but without the part where you spend money.
A free community space doesn't look like a queer cafe, it's the weekly groups run by a local LGBT center. It's not the bookstore that sells exclusively lesbian romance, it's that one library branch that you know the librarian working at is cool because they ordered the library system a copy of that new book with a trans MC that all your friends are talking about but you can't afford. Things that exist, and are important, but we do have to be realistic about how they come to be. Even if you don't need to purchase things to keep these spaces running, we still need to support them, through volunteering, donations, taxes, all of those sorts of things
also: if you want queer spaces that don't cost money, you should understand that will probably include homeless queer people. who also deserve queer spaces and queer community even when they can't open their wallets or be super presentable and socially adept. community isn't just your friends and your customers.
also "this isn't about capitalism" wrong. everything is about capitalism. even just in the sense that We Live In A Capitalist Economy. "this is just reality" yes! capitalist reality! capitalism is not something that can be segregated into only specific conversations and is completely unrelated to the idea that "community spaces" means "buying services from a small business" lol
"decenter trans men" so what is it? are trans men hyperinvisible? or are they the center of everything? because those things are mutually exclusive. you can't have both. since fucking when have trans men ever been centered? or would admitting that you've been centered (at least in trans spaces) this entire time cause such internal turmoil that you've gotta come up with these stupid one-liners that make no sense, so you can drown out the sound of your own guilty conscience?
so predictably this isn't true
i actually watched the lecture and while i don't agree with all of amin's core positions (he's a gender abolitionist and i'm not, so i would expect that) when he talks about crossdressers he clearly does so in a context of a case study of historical self-identified "heterosexual transvestites." to roughly oversimplify, the talk as a whole is about the theory of identity construction as a function of class and racialization and how economic opportunity = leisure time = space to create Identity as separate from Action. basically, that white trans women, especially those attracted to women, historically delayed transition because they had more to lose than black and latina women, and the barrier between the lived experience and internal sense of self created certain identity-forward ways of thinking about gender
whether or not you agree with his conclusions about identity construction is up to you, but you have to actually back that up with an argument about theory instead of just making shit up to poison the well. (considering he's a brown man talking about the disparities in trans experience created by white privilege, this reeks of coming up with any reason you can to smear an uppity academic of color l o l)
Do not confuse being understood with being loved. Plenty of people will map every corner of your heart and still choose to leave it. Others will mispronounce your soul forever, and remain. We are translated imperfectly into one another. Love has never required fluency—only patience.
being on this website as it gets worse really makes me understand what it feels like to be a highly specialized species suffering under habitat destruction
