This phenomenon can be explained from Palworld being what is considered a "good game" (任天堂以外のゲームをプレイしてください), which can be a concept that is difficult for fans of "Pocket Monsters" from the last decade or so to conceptualize. When Orwell was alive, he worked for both the British imperial army in his youth, and for the cia later in his life. To act like he is not hilariously biased when it comes to the subject of communism and socialism is just plain revisionism of his life and the society that surrounded him. He wasn't a progressive writer, and this must be taken into mind when analyzing his work.

it has been repeated a thousand times, but his works aren't some "anti-authoritarian" anything. he was a man who had a deep disdain for the working class and the idea of the working class doing revolution. he had no problem being the boot on other people's throat. he had no problem making lists of political dissidents to report to the police. he wrote some dogshit novels about what he thought the USSR was like (he never went there or really studied it) during the second world war. he also wrote "I should like to put it on record that I have never been able to dislike Hitler" in his 1940 review of Mein Kampf. the only reason he is so well regarded is because the CIA pushed his works onto TV and into schools as anticommunist propaganda. he was always a worm and his works are just bourgeois wank.

There is a really frustrating thing where some kinds of speculative story are hard to write because they will be assumed to be bad (clumsy, harmful, regressive) metaphors for real-world events or people, rather than exploring completely speculative ideas. Like:

"What if a small group of religious extremists, persecuted in their own country, moved to an inhospitable uninhabited island and had to rebuild society there?" - But the Americas and Australia weren't inhospitable and were full of Native nations, why are you perpetuating the idea of Terra Nullius and manifest destiny? - Yes, that's because this isn't a metaphor for the British invading other countries, it's a metaphor for finding out how much of a person's religious practise is rooted in worldly concerns, vs how much they will really stymie themselves for the sake of God.

"What if 1/100 children born was a werewolf?" - But queer people are no danger to straight people, and disabled people don't have predictable patterns to their illnesses, and most people who have uncontrollable rages really CAN control them and are just lying, and no minority group has superpowers... - Yes, but that's all immaterial, because I wanted to talk about a load of other metaphors about the passage of time and responsibility and the relationship between humans and wildlife.

It almost feels like death of the author, like "Death of the most obvious metaphor" - If you couldn't reach for the (tormented) parallel between being an alien species and being stateless, what stories could someone tell? If your changeling-baby was neither disabled nor adopted, what would the story be about? Etc.

Something doesn't have to be true *only* of one culture in order to be a value of that culture. Part of Christianity, and the culture that it creates, is the insistence that there is a single absolute truth to everything, that Christianity and the Christian person are the holders of that truth, and that anyone else is wrong and must be shown the error of their ways. That is a major fucking tenet of Christianity and a major part of cultural Christianity.

Other religions and cultures also do the same thing, but that doesn't mean that Christianity doesn't do it.

@vividaway​ Randall Munroe is an internet cartoonist who runs the ‘xkcd’ online comic series, which has run from 2006 up to today, with new comics every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Xkcd isn’t an ongoing story, just a series of funny, wholesome, depressing, or oddly scientifically informative comics.

In 2010, Randall’s fiance was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. He didn’t share too many details at first, but things tended to bleed into his comics: sometimes funny, sometimes sad.

Often in this time, other cartoonists would write in guest comics for Randall, or he’d put in short filler pieces, to try and fill space while nonstop cancer treatments took up most of his time.

In 2012, he posted a comic called ‘Two Years’, about the time since the diagnosis. It’s the one that hasn’t yet been posted here (although parts of it are included in the other comics), and it commemorates some of the things that had happened in the two years since the diagnosis.

There are representations of Randall and his fiance being together for her treatment, worrying together, traveling the world, and getting married. It’s still depressing, but it’s a lot more hopeful, showing how they’ve still managed to have happy moments together, and things will still get better.

Themes of cancer continued in xkcd, but they increasingly became less about fear and nihilism, and more about hope, or just cool facts related to cancer.

At the top of this post is the comic posted in 2017: Seven Years. In it, Randall and his wife are traveling more, trying to have fun and continue old and new hobbies, with cancer ever-present in the background of it all. At the end, the two of them observe the 2017 solar eclipse, and despite all the uncertainty that comes with the thought of another seven years, agree to watch the 2024 eclipse together too.

There are just about no cancer comics between that one and the most recent comic, the one I posted: Ten Years, written in 2020. It’s by far the most hopeful of the three in the little series: the two of them are happy, they’re playing with rabbits and riding on handcarts and going out hiking and stargazing, together. At the end, Ten Years breaks the format with a conversation in which they talk about how unbelievable it is that it’s been so long, and share their worries as well as their hopes. It even ends on a much more lighthearted joke about immortality.

It’s a good comic. Definitely in my top two comics wherein internet cartoonists express emotions about an illness suffered by their wife.

My default assumption when someone is accused of being racist or sexist is to not believe the allegations until they become more specific. If someone is leaning on the scary word and refusing to elaborate then chances are high the accuser is full of shit and just mad because someone told them "no" and they're not used to hearing that word.
