I have cochlear implants and I can only buy parts to fix them or upgrade then from 1 corporation bc of tech exclusivity. upgrades to get new processors for both ears cost $23k & insurance only covers 90% (and it’s “good” insurance)
cyberpunk dystopia is already here for the disabled. fight for universal healthcare, fight against capitalism NOW.
I want all the abled people reading this to go price check a power wheel chair.
The future people fear with subscription fees for body parts is already here. The plot of Repo! The Genetic Opera is already here. Disabled people are already facing impossible prices for aids and treatments they need to live.
hey, if you're a usamerican getting the news, not knowing what to do, this is really really really good time to get acquainted with the national council on independent living, the independent living movement, and your local centers for independent living.
independent living centers provide services and support by disabled people for disabled people and can help with: navigating systems, self-advocacy, and accessing services, among many other things. in their truest form, CILs function not in the model of state agencies, but as a form of structured in-community mutual aid. my local CIL provides services like counseling, advocacy, grants to cover some home needs, and meals on wheels for disabled adults under sixty-five. CILs can't fill all the gaps in services we have in this country, but they do important work to keep people alive. if you need help, your local center for independent living may be able to help. if you can give help, your local center for independent living can definitely use your help!!!!!
please do reblog <3

Why do people need subtitles to watch a show in English? I don't get it. What is wrong with the ears of young people?
Modern movies and shows tend to have very unbalanced mixing. Also, a common trend in modern movies is more realistic dialogue (mumbling) that is not as crisp as it was in previous eras of film making.

may we live to see the day where the first photo results of your intersex variation aren't graphic photos of igm
In setting up Intersex Wiki one of the decisions I have been feeling really good about is the policy/practice that the first photos in any article on an intersex variation need to be photos of clothed individuals with their faces visible. Ideally smiling for the camera.
I'm so tired of articles on intersex variations where the visuals are graphic images of genitals & obviously uncomfortable (semi-)naked people with their faces cropped or blurred out.
It has really been a breath of fresh air to instead have humanizing photos of actual (often famous) intersex individuals as the illustrations for intersex variations, e.g.:
It's not always possible to find humanizing photos since some intersex variations are very rare, but I personally think it's been worth the effort to try and hunt down these kinds of photos! 💜
Shoutout when I sent this on ham radio, some automated receiver bot (in tennessee, 1200 miles away) posted it, and it blew up.
I did this with pride radio group, good people in the ham radio community. Plz check em out if interested in radio while gay :3
if you’re not someone who picks up dead marine mammals you might be surprised how hands-on random citizens are about trying to assist the picking up of dead marine mammals.
every time I go on a call to a dead seal to collect it for a necropsy, god forbid a passerby sees me because they will walk up to me no hesitation
while i’m dressed like hannibal about to commit a murder and also in an N95 mask and they’ll be like “here let me help” and just reach for this dead animal and when I have to shout “STOP” they look so shocked and even offended every time.
like they think my outfit is just for fun
Ooh, out of curiosity, what ARE the potential hazards? I don't typically touch dead wild animals as it is, but I'm curious for the marine-specific concerns, if you feel like sharing.
Of course! The hazard here is Zoonotic disease. While an epizootic disease refers to a disease impacting animal populations, Zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses, are transmissible between humans and animals—meaning humans and animals can infect each other.
You can end up with any number of infections by handling dead or injured marine mammals.
‘Seal Finger’ is one example, a serious infection you can contract by touching & handling seals (even dead seals!) or being bitten by one (even injured seals bite!) (source)
Seal Finger infections often impact patients’ hands—hence its name—but it’s not limited to hands. Seal Finger actually refers to infections caused by multiple, unique pathogens. It responds well to prompt diagnosis & treatment, but left untreated it can result in amputation or worse.
Marine mammals can also spread Leptospirosis to humans and all of the symptoms that come with it, as well as Brucellosis and Giardia. Many of these can also be transmitted to our pets, which is one reason to keep your cats indoors and your dogs on leashes at the beach (source)
Multiple strains of HPAI—Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (aka Bird Flu)—have been detected in seal populations over the years, including the most recent strain of concern, H5N1. Luckily, Avian Influenza transmission from marine mammals to humans is extremely rare (source) (source) (source) (source)
Some of these infections are less common and harder to contract than others, but that doesn’t mean you should take your chances.
If you spend any time by the coast, look up the contact information for your local marine mammal stranding & rescue network and save it in your phone so you have it if you need it. Don’t approach an ill, injured, or dead animal on your own, and keep your pets clear.
When it comes to living marine mammals, keep a healthy distance to protect them as well—at least 100 yards on land. Generally we say that if marine mammals like seals are focused on you, lifting their heads to watch you, you’re too close already! You should do what you can to avoid disturbing marine mammals at all. Obviously that’s not always possible, but it’s good to try your best! Thanks for asking!

ok this looks like a joke but it's actually serious, if you are prepping for anal sex and you over-clean you are stripping away the natural mucus that lines the rectum and protects it from damage. All you need to do to make sure you're clean enough for sex is make sure to eat a well-balanced diet with a good amount of fiber, evacuate the bowels (i.e. poop) beforehand, MAYBE douche using a SMALL amount of PLAIN WATER in an enema bulb (not repeatedly or excessively), and then wash the outer surrounding area gently with soap and water in the shower. That's it! Don't put soap up your ass, or any kind of "cleanser"! Don't douche 5000 times! And be sure to use a lot of lube especially if you did choose to douche, because it makes you more vulnerable to injury from friction! Stay safe and don't hurt your butthole
and if you're not having sex, nothing needs to go inside there at all! just use mild soap and water on the outside only.

shout out to my folks with insomnia & depression & delayed sleep phase disorder & sleep apnea & disabilities & other sleep disorders diagnosed, undiagnosed, and just my plain old night owls & night shift workers!! we r so fucking cool & exist every day in a society not made for us at all. and NONE of us are lazy bums or bad people for staying up late & sleeping in till noon or two or whatever whenever you get up!! no matter what anyone says!! you’re incredible and i love you!!!
the number of jobs that disabled people could do with no problems if it weren’t for the way they would need to do it being deemed unprofessional is sooooo. 😐
like the things that keep disabled people out of a lot of jobs frequently have nothing to do with the actual requirements of the job
"why are people suddenly saying kink isn't always sexual" hello! you seem to have picked up on something that is actually de facto considered true in IRL kink scenes and often trotted out as one of the basic foundational truths of kink in educational contexts (i.e. beginners' workshops, it'll be in guides for first-timers at dungeons, etc). come take my hand and let me introduce you to the vast and wonderful world of IRL kink.
"kink," contrary to what a lot of internet-only kinksters seem to think, is not referencing your relationship to a concept--it's referencing the concept itself. for example, "bondage" in this context is not referring to "being turned on by tying someone up/being tied up," it's referring to the concept of being tied up/tying someone up itself. this is one of the most common kinks you'll see people playing with in entirely nonsexual contexts--most rope groups have at least a handful of players who are asexual or entirely sex-repulsed, for example. at a lot of rope play sessions, sexual activity will be banned entirely & you'll generally be expected to not show signs of sexual arousal while in that space. because it's not the space for that--sexual play parties are their own thing.
so what makes something a kink vs. a "normal" interest, if it's not a sexual aspect? mostly social stigma. the group of interests considered "kinks" have developed a shared umbrella due to a shared societal pathologization of those interests in similar ways, and one of the ways that pathology manifests is by considering those interests fundamentally sexual. there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a sexual dimension to your kink, to be clear--but society sees sex as inherently disgusting, and sexualization is frequently weaponized to pathologize all kinds of people.
portraying interest in domination/submission as inherently sexual, for example, means those explicitly navigating consensual d/s play are relegated to the realm of "the bedroom" and signifiers of their relationship (i.e. a collar) are considered "obscene" and not fit to exist in public--even when equivalent signifiers of vanilla lifestyles are allowed and not considered obscene, i.e. a wedding ring. if you portray an interest in roleplaying as a dog as inherently sexual, it means anyone roleplaying as a dog in public is subjecting the public to nasty, perverted sex, it can be classified as obscene, you can arrest people for barking and wearing leashes even if they are deriving zero sexual pleasure from it whatsoever and are not exposing themselves or harassing anyone.
why are most kinks expressed sexually to some degree, or have a sexual dimension to them? because sexually active adults tend to enjoy sex. i don't know how else to explain this, genuinely. if you are a person who experiences sexual arousal and sexual attraction, then you will often be aroused by your interests in a sexual context.
like, i am really into fandom. i love a lot of different things about fandom. one of the things i love about fandom is that it's horny; i'm a big enthusiast of smut, horny cosplay, et cetera and so on. but that doesn't mean that i don't like fandom in completely non-horny contexts, or that my interest in fandom is always sexual and can never be separated from sex. just because i cosplay erotically doesn't mean that i don't also cosplay in other contexts entirely. cosplay turns me on, and i also love cosplaying at conventions and for entirely non-horny reasons.
kink is the same. sometimes the exact same person is both turned on by petplay and interested in it nonsexually. this is actually like... really common, it's not even just "sometimes," i would say it applies to the vast majority of IRL kinksters active in my local scene, and i would hazard a guess that this isn't a major outlier, it's fairly common in scenes across the world. but if you can understand "i like cosplaying, and sometimes i'll cosplay at a convention, and sometimes i'll cosplay for sex, and sometimes i'll cosplay for fun alone in my room, and sometimes i'll cosplay to jack off, and sometimes i'll cosplay for money, and none of these are The Only Reason I Like Cosplay, and sometimes when i cosplay i will do it in a way that only includes some of these reasons and not the others at all," it shouldn't be too hard to apply the same reasoning to kink.
anyway, trying to relegate "kink" to only and solely refer to "this set of stigmatized interests and relationship dynamics, but only in reference to sex specifically" is closing the barn door after the horses are gone. sorry y'all but the kink community developed in response to medical pathologization and severe social stigma. there's no post-hoc way to turn it into an ontological classification of some form--kink is messy and abstract as a category because it isn't a category based in, like, scientific observation or ontological meanings of words. it's a category based in "we think these people are freaks and we need a diagnosis for their freakishness" lol. the forcible sexualization of every aspect of kink is part of the initial classification of this loose social realm as "fetish" and/or "paraphilia." sex is not evil or scary or bad but equally the structures doing the pathologization do consider sex to be evil and that's not something you can just ignore when discussing how sex is utilized rhetorically in these discussions.
