Have you heard of Rockalina the eastern box turtle at Garden State Tortoise? She was illegally poached in 1977 and surrendered after 50 years of extremely poor conditions, I can't get over how well she's rebounded with proper care?? I didn't know turtles were that tough.

I have loved following Rockalina’s story over the past year! To the point where watching her eat a worm for the first time moved me to tears 🥹

It really is incredible how she’s come back to life from the precipice of death. The power of species appropriate husbandry!

The way turtles can withstand hardship and neglect is wild. I once read that early pirates in the Galapagos decimated tortoise populations because they could just stack the turtles in the ship’s hold with no food or water and they’d remain alive (and viable as a food source) for years.

While turtles are insanely tough, I feel this can actually make them more susceptible to husbandry errors that compound negative effects over time. Pet tortoises can survive and function through serious neglect, which can mean humans caring for them don’t always realize that they’re doing something wrong. And when that happens for years or decades at a time you get a case like Rockalina. I’m so glad she ended up where she did and that she gets to eat strawberries and worms in the sunshine.
