Sad news today, the Brilliant David Burke has sadly passed. Thoughts and prayers to Mr Burkes family and friends he will be missed 🖤
Rest in Peace Dear David Burke 💙
Do you remember where did "Watson is (half) Scottish" headcanon came from? Or is it canon?
Watson is a Scottish name! And he serves with the Northumberland Fusiliers — Northumberland borders Scotland.
Some of this headcanon's fannish popularity can also be traced back to the 1943 tongue-in-cheek essay Dorothy L. Sayers wrote in which she argued that the H in "John H. Watson" stood for "Hamish," which is a Scottish variant of "James." Because Doyle was such a poor editor, in one story Mary Watson calls her husband "James" instead of "John." It looks bad to forget your own husband's name, so Sayers jokingly suggested that this was an affectionate nickname based on his middle name. And forever after fandom has largely accepted "Hamish" as part of his name, implying a Scottish heritage :) Oh, the tangled webs we weave! Meta jokes were indeed going viral long before the internet, LOL!
happy ‘marry him murder him do what you like with him’ mas everyone !!
regular people do a countdown to christmas. people with big brains do a countdown to the acd sherlock holmes books finally being in the public domain
hope our next book club is the og sherlock holmes, just so people can realize how needlessly obnoxious most modern adaptations make him when he's actually merely moderately obnoxious in a very funny way
1984 Granada series with Jeremy Brett comes the absolute closest and I urge everyone to watch it free on youtube
I got you covered!
Letters from Watson is starting in January 2023. Over 5000 people are already signed up, and there is an active discord server which is a lot of fun!
(We're watching Sherlock Gnomes tomorrow at the time of me writing...)

At this period of my life the good Watson had passed almost beyond my ken. An occasional week-end visit was the most that I ever saw of him. —The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane
good morning to the kindest of men, the gentlemen, the conductors of light, the only fixed points in this changing age, the intimate friends and colleagues, the dear fellows, the trusted comrades, the faithful friends and biographers, the men with natural advantages, the Boswells without whom one would be lost, the men who luckily are not in the least afraid to sleep in the same room with a lunatic, a man with softening of the brain, an idiot whose mind has lost its grip AND the men with kinder hearts. the rest of you however…you're are on your own.
i just think that he is So friend shaped
Hi my name is John Watson and this is my long, thin friend Sherlock Holmes
I remember seeing a post with like 4,000 notes on it of this picture as a very grainy black and white gif, and they were lamenting the fact that it was the world’s sassiest photo and couldn’t be found in better quality.
I now post this to give you joy.
EDIT! Yes, this is Jeremy Brett and David Burke from the Granada TV Sherlock Holmes series that ran from 1984-1994, also via PBS Mystery! The episode this still is from is “The Naval Treaty”, and if you haven’t watched it, you should, because you will totally fall in love with Jeremy Brett, and his first Watson David Burke ^in the photo above is a terrific Watson and yes, a total cutie pie. Second Watson Edward Hardwicke is fantastic too.
