I love your responses. But I gotta respectfully disagree on Goku and his choices. I don’t think Goku is a deep thinker, he just makes decisions as he goes. Actually DB isn’t really deep in general imo. Lol. So I really don’t feel bad for him at all when people call him a crappy husband and dad because to me, he kinda is. This isn’t me saying Vegeta is better (he’s bad too). But to say Goku really agonized over leaving his family MULTIPLE times just isn’t something that was portrayed imo.
hm i see your point. but personally, the way i look at it is more like, ‘if this was being portrayed more realistically, how would he REALLY feel on the inside.’ i know dbz probs isnt MEANT to be that deep, but like… thats not good enough for me lol. tbh dbz really is not my kind of show lol. i dont care about fighting or action at all, BUT what makes me so interested in it is seeing it from more internal psychological perspective. i mean, again, thats why vegetas my favorite, because everything they show and imply about him and the implications you can make from his past and his life, they dont show it, BUT ITS THERE. and human beings are infinitely complex things (saiyans are no different!). emotional/mental DEPTH is really an extra layer that the show doesnt really go into, or didnt at the time, but to assume many of gokus choices in the show were like on the spot is completely unrealistic to me. i really dont think he’s that one-faced. Maybe its just me, and im spinning up my own headcanon here, but i like to give him the benefit of the doubt, like if i put myself in GOKUS SHOES during the critical moments where he had to decide between his family or the greater good of everyone else,…. i feel like id do the same. :/ ok like these are the main moments im talking about in DBZ (not SUPER i dont count super super is ridiculous and i dont count it 🙄especially since this is a discussion thats been going on way even before super came out ) -NUMBER ONE- in the beginning of DBZ, when goku DIES and is gone for a year while everyone else trains for the saiyans; why isnt he there raising gohan? CUZ HES FUCKING DEAD LOL he DIED BE.CUZ. he was protecting the earth from what was then the main threat, Raditz. until everybody finds out theres MORE SAIYANS A COMIN. so, instead of being resurrected there, he decides ‘no. im gonna find this dude who can maybe train me to make me STRONGER THAN THE SAIYANS’ so he runs on snake way for like 6 MONTHS STRAIGHT?? JUST SO HE CAN FIND KING KAI AND HAVE HIM TEACH HIM MOVES THAT WILL NOT ONLY SAVE THE EARTH BUT ALSO HIS FAMILY WHO COINCIDENTALLY LIVE… ON EARTH. I CANT BLAME HIM FOR THAT. he’s not just trying to protect his family hes trying to protect EVERYONE.
- NUMBER 2- when goku decides to stay on yardrat instead of being summoned back to earth when he easily could of- he chose to stay to learn teleportation, and, what i believe, not because he thought just ‘OH COOL’, but because he thought ‘OH COOL- if i learn this, this could be really helpful for later!!’ AND IT WAS. i dont feel like staying to learn a skill that could possibly be extremely helpful in tight spots when you or your family n friends are in danger is A BAD THING? again- bettering himself for the benefit of everyone. -NUMBER 3 (and i feel like this is the kicker)- choosing to stay dead after cell. FIRST OF ALL; the earth dragonballs couldnt do it anyway, he died twice, he had to stay dead (you could argue NAMEK DRAGONBALLS but like he was like ‘no guys its ok’). i mean like… THATS SUCH A HARD DECISION TO MAKE. i know the anime or the manga dont really go into it, but dbz is written LIKE THAT, but that doesnt mean behind the scenes it wasnt hard for him to have to decide. the whole point of CELL was that dr gero wanted goku DEAD AT ALL COSTS. cell existed BECUZ goku existed, and that cell caused SO MUCH GRIEF AND HARM AND SLAUGHTER TO THE EARTH. and i feel like GOKU UNDERSTOOD THIS. goku saw that he was a TARGET that attracts villains, and thusly puts the people, his friends, his family, and the EARTH at risk… and THAT FUCKING SUCKS LOL. its not like goku actively goes out of his way to find VILLAINY. HES JUST A DUDE ON A PLANET TRYING TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH HIS FAM LOL. but when BAD PEOPLE KEEP COMING FOR YOU AND THE THINGS YOU CARE ABOUT… to me its just such a heartbreaking realization to have that ‘im the reason bad things keep happening to my loved ones.’ so to sit there and be like ‘go back home, to my wife and kids and friends and risk their lives over ME, or stay dead, and let them live in peace’… ALKFHDASLF I DUNNO TO ME THATS SO SAD AKDFHA. so, again, AGAIN, he thinks of the greater GOOD, which is to keep the planet he loves and calls home, and the people he loves and cares about, his wife, his son, safe, by taking himself out of the picture; thusly depriving himself of watching his son grow up, and seeing the birth of his second child…LIKE.YO. HOW IS THAT NOT SAD THATS SO SAD TO ME KLFHALKSDand if we really get into it, like. yea if you read/watch that scene, he seems cheery about it… BUT THATS GOKU. THATS HIS MAIN QUALITY. to smile when things get bad, to have hope when no one else does, TO KEEP UP MORALE. to put on a smile to assure you that everything is gonna be ok, even if it might not be… THATS GOKU. so he smiles, puts on a happy face, and honestly thats so strong to do. to make such a difficult decision, but to convince everyone (even yourself) that itll be ok… like. idk. i try to look at his from a human perspective, and when i do i see so much more. SO IDK. TAKE IT FOR WHAT YOU WILL. hate him or love him thats your business. but i simply speak as someone who once hated gokus character a lot, but now, after trying to look at him and understand his choices, i get it. i do feel bad for him. life isnt so black and white. a simple decision on the outside doesnt mean there wasnt an internal struggle. everyone has their reasons for doing what they do. you can judge a person on a surface level, sure, its easy its fast. but to look at them like a person, on the inside, and not just an object is something else. idk. that just me…… vegeta is still my fave tho lol but goku has grown on me, yea.
