I think there was something sort of profoundly beautiful about the Wii.

I don’t know why, but especially with the built-in channels there was something about the presentation and the music that really feels so much different from any other console. I think it’s because it’s the first console that tried to be something a little more than just a gaming device, and the ephemeral feeling that came with trying to blaze a trail while still maintaining an air of “we know exactly what we’re doing and are fully confident in these ideas”.

Looking back on it is like a fully realized glimpse into a reality congruent but slightly skewed to our own. The place on our respective timelines was right after the intersection where the two lines fully separated from each other, but only barely.

Just last week I finally got an RCA-to-HDMI converter so I could boot up the Wii again, and I had the exact same wash of emotions. There’s something about having to navigate the front menu with a Wiimote too… the sort of delayed wavy motion tracking that still somehow ends up exactly where you wanted to point… feeling the slight vibration as your cursor passes over those little tv channels… the constant lingering presence of the Miis, which somehow managed to seem ahead of their time and comically primitive… each channel’s little jingle when you select it setting the mood for what’s in store, along with a little animated title screen… The Wii definitely is a perfect little microcosm of its time. I look forward to kids growing up and discovering it as a somewhat goofy little relic, tightening their wrist straps, and waggling their way through a round of Mii bowling.
