I was gonna make a jokey post about how Rachel Animorphs is a great character because "what if the most fashionable it girl at your school discovered a passion for war crimes" is just inherently interesting to watch, and you know, that's true
But I think the real thing that makes her interesting is that while the other Animorphs have the "what if you were in a situation where you had to do violence and it was hard" thing covered from a variety of angles, Rachel's arc is "what if you were in a situation where you had to do violence and it was entirely too easy?"
one thing i really appreciate, especially in hindsight, is that rachel could never really reconcile the two halves of herself. she was the heavy hitter of the team, the pointman, the tank; as much as it worried and disturbed the others that she was hands down the most fearless warrior if the group, they NEEDED someone in that role and they were all incredibly grateful that it didnt fall to them.
and rachel was also a teenage girl, and she was naturally good at that too. she was fashionable and witty, she did gymnastics, she had a great eye for clothes and a sassy attitude that kept bullies well away.
she couldn't reconcile it. marco was much more comfortable with navigating ambiguity and contradictions and called her xena, warrior princess, succinctly accepting that a woman could be beautifully feminine and unstoppably violent at the same time. but rachel herself was never comfortable with the dichotomy.
to rip people's heads off with her fangs as a grizzly bear wasn't anything like being a teen girl shopping for the perfect sweater. and as the war ground on, the half of her that was a girl withered away. her friends didn't need that part. they liked the girl but they needed the killer. and she resented that and mourned it-- and that's a gorgeous tragedy too.
she died by halves, first the princess and then the warrior, and each time she knew what she was sacrificing.

I cannot tell you how comforted I am that Rupert Giles exists. I am also full of anger and fuckery, and I also choose to be kind, and there are times I don’t hold it together. I haven’t stabbed anyone, but I’m also not dealing with literal demons. So.
