Words can’t express how deeply I want Cape Verde to beat Argentina for very selfish reasons about underdogs and not liking how often I have to hear the name Messi.

someone on reddit shared texts of her and her husband's exclusive english dialect and it's beautiful
a linguist is analyzing it
I've been starting a rewatch of Leverage since I got the dvd set as a gift. I got to the second episode, The Homecoming Job, and I forgot about a quote that the mark, the ceo of a private military contractor, has as at one point (paraphrased):
"Getting a candidate into office is only about $15 grand and the incumbancy rate is 90%, meaning you get 18-20 years out of them. In this day and age, a US Congressman is one of the best investments a corporation can make."
I'd like to be able to say the writers were baing a bit on the nose with having the bad guy say that, but I could absolutely see some AI tech bro saying that word for word.
(anyway, go watch Leverage. It's very cathartic seeing a heist show for taking down CEOs and other rich assholes. And the whole show is free on youtube)
There’s at least a little good news
For those of you confused about why it’s “nearly all children” that’s because children born to foreign diplomats and children born on foreign owned boats in US waters aren’t citizens because the constitution says citizenship applies to people born in the US and subject to the jurisdiction thereof. Diplomats and people on foreign owned boats aren’t subject to the jurisdiction of the US government.
its actually easy to de-enshittify your digital experience all you need to do is install this browser extension and this browser extension and this browser extension and input this custom script into the advanced box and go into your system settings and reconfigure all these options you didnt know existed and change your entire workflow and switch to this alternative operating system and this alternative web browser and this alternative chat client and this alternative word processor and this alternative- sorry that one turned out to be malware delete that one okay now double check your task manager for unwanted background processes and element block these ads and invest in a good VPN and append all your searches with AI blocking keywords and wait a few years until everything you just did becomes shitty too so you can do it all over again okay kitten. its literally that easy.
As a society we have benefited so much from successful public health measures that we now have the privilege of declaring that we must not need them anymore
Bitch before enriched flour, neural tube defects like spina bifida were far more common. Even now, spina bifida clinicians and researchers are begging to have salt and maize fortified to reach groups that don’t use as much flour. Before iodized salt, the United States had a fucking GOITER BELT. Eleven years after the introduction of fluoridated water, a city in Michigan found the rate of dental caries among school children dropped a staggering 60%— in an era where tooth decay regularly fucking killed people
I’m literally not even going to start on vaccines, which are among the most successful and robustly studied public health measures in world history
You might say “oh well today we all have access to vitamins and toothpastes and dentists so we don’t need those things in our food supplies” and boy do white people on social media loooove to fucking say that. But here’s the thing: no, people don’t all have easy access to those things. That’s privilege talking yet again
Yeah, it's kind of funny that a lot of companies are now re-hiring junior programmers to save on LLM credits, but it's not surprising. From a pure line-goes-up perspective, working people to death is almost always better than automation. That isn't an indictment of LLMs in particular – it's just how this shit works.
Like, yeah, joke about the "self-driving car" service that turned out to be employing remote drivers in the Philippines if you want, but it's not only a tech grift; the fact of the matter is that even if the technology was there, making that guy in the Philippines pull sixteen-hour shifts with no bathroom breaks until he dies of a bladder infection is almost certainly cheaper than "real" AI would be, and that's the actual reason they do it. They wouldn't deliver on their promises even if they could.
also much cheaper than paying a driver in the west of course. it's labour market arbitrage all the way down
The reason prokopetz says "self-driving car service" and not which company he's talking about is that he's talking about Waymo. The largest and most successful self-driving car company in the world, whose cars are famously about ten times safer than human drivers. So anyone who knows anything about the company would be able to say he's talking complete bullshit - not only is there no way to get ten times safer than a human driver by using a human driver, you cannot reliably and safely run thousands of cars in real time via remote connection to the Philippines anyway. You just cannot pretend that's happening.
And obviously the economics would be gibberish anyway - claiming this is "cheaper than real AI" runs straight into the literal tens of billions Waymo and its parent Alphabet have spent on research over the last decade.
The story was based on Waymo's use of remote intervention when its AI driver requests assistance - you can find several mentions of this on their own website, including this release from February stating that they have ~70 remote access workers on duty at a time for a fleet of 3,700 cars. According to the California DMV's testing data (which it has collected since 2014, because this is some of the most heavily scrutinised technology in the world), Waymo's AI required human intervention once every 19,000 miles last year.
At some point you are going to have to notice that self-driving cars are real. That point happened multiple years ago.
why is it so hot. why is it so hot. I am being punished.
I'm having my first 24/7 dom/sub relationship with the entirety of the fucking sun
Hey, we’re in line for some absurd temperatures here in the southwest this week. This is very important to know and keep in mind. Be safe, stay hydrated, stay out of the sun as much as you can.
Remember kids, DO NOT chug half a gallon of water all at once. Go ahead and chug just a bit, but then make yourself stop and take sips consistently over time.
If you’re still desperately thirsty after having some water, you probably need electrolytes. There are many options - eat a pickle, have a gatorade (or whatever brand you prefer), add an electrolyte packet to your water, sprinkle salt on some watermelon, make a fun drink with coconut water.
Foods count for hydration, too! Juicy fresh fruits and veg, cold soups, popsicles!
very cool but also kind of a dick move
Stop making Hannibal furry headcanons unless it’s this bird
It's apparently only ONE population of this species that does this. Everyone else hunts and caches normally. The other falcons probably talk shit about this fucked up torture family.
Ooooh that’s even more fascinating. That means it’s a learned behavior they TAUGHT one another.
