A trope that’s not that common but still breaks my heart is when a character is in an alternate universe or a fake good universe to try and lower them into a false sense of security, or even seeing a flashback of a memory that ended well, being like “this isn’t how it ended.” Or “that’s not how it went.” And their voice just aches because all the grief in their regret comes through. What if they had been kinder. What if somehow that time they had listened. But they didn’t. But it’s nice to pretend, even for a moment.
