Hey all I took a looooong time off of Tumblr! I graduated undergrad, took a wilderness first responder course (highly recommend this for premed students - it's at University of Colorado) and then the pandemic happened and then my MCAT got cancelled (twice!). It's been a wild ride... I actually decided to go back to school and get my Master's degree in Biology online before I apply to med school. I graduated undergrad with a 2.9 gpa, and even with a fantastic MCAT (that I work my arse off to get) I know it won't be enough. I also know I don't have solid letters of rec! I plan on connecting better with my professors and working really hard to get a gpa of over 3.5. I'm going to take the MCAT in January (depending on how this whole pandemic thing turns out) and applying in the 2021-2022 cycle for med school.

This week I'm up at the Mayo with my mama, and let me tell you, this has been interesting during Covid. You get used to wearing a mask and getting your temperature taken a lot. 🤣🤣 I've been doing some light MCAT studying with the Miledown Anki decks and my Kaplan books. I love the Mayo and the Alix School of Medicine would be incredible to get into, so I've been daydreaming about that too 🤣

I had two exams yesterday, so I gave myself off today just to enjoy some coffee and Halloween! My second exam (for O. Chem lab) was at 8:45pm (blech) and that totally wiped me out. I did better than I thought on it, so that's exciting! Orgo is so hard, and I wasn't sure what to expect for the exam. Tomorrow, back to the grind! I only have two more midterms before finals, and dare I say it, GRADUATION! Starting to look for cap ideas, let me know if you have any!

See, children get all of there mtDNA (mitochondrial dna) from their mother and none from their father - where as their normal DNA is a 50:50 mix of both their mother’s and father’s. This means that mtDNA remains unchanged as its passed down from mum to daughter. This goes on for generations, in fact, geneologists can trace back lineages for millions of years using mtDNA.

Reblogging for the last comment. My sister works in genealogy, identifying any female living relatives of missing soldiers. The men dont matter. Why? Because the female family member’s DNA can be traced back GENERATIONS with no decay. When bodies (generally from vietnam or Korean wars) are recovered, they then can finding living female biological relatives, no matter how distantly related, to positively identify the remains.

I am struggling hard to stay focused today... I didn't get enough sleep last night, I desperately need my chiropractor because my hips are killing me, and I am just struggling. It's painful to do anything but walk around right now so currently pacing my house. I was doing yoga, fell and jolted my hip... I'm just totally off.

And that is okay. I'll get back to it tomorrow! Rough days happen, don't beat yourself up over them! Hope everyone is doing well!

All US public schools should receive the same funding based on the amount of enrolled students

All property taxes that would initially go to the local school district should be nationally divided between all US public schools.

If previously wealthy school districts funding needs aren’t being met, the education budget should be nationally increased, to provide the same public school education for all children in attendance.

Schools should not receive funding based on the success of their students.

Schools with high rates of failure should receive special attention to bring them back up to par with the rest of the public education system.

Had my first Immunology exam today and have been spending the week studying for it with a ton of Anki flashcards (peep that cute lil study buddy sleeping away 😍)... Like so many for only 3 weeks of class 😳 The test ended up not being too bad, and I passed it with flying colors. I am loving immunology and love learning the cell signaling pathways. Left the exam to this incredible view of the old cap building on campus, to be reminded of how incredibly lucky I am to be graduating from such a great institution. All the trials and tribulations between weed out classes and financial aid (gawd I will NOT miss dealing with financial aid), it has all been worth it! Just need to stick it out this last semester and then I'll have my B.S. in human physiology! literally so excited 😁

Long time no see studyblrs! I haven't posted any new content since my freshman year of college and now I'm a junior (yikes). I'm so grateful to all 60K of you for sticking around! There will be more content to come in the coming months ✨

On another note, I just wanted to share my journey on becoming more sustainable even in the studyblr space. When I first started this blog I went out and spent so much money on stationery that I couldn't possible use up just for the aesthetic. I bought without stopping and asking myself whether I actually needed yet another Muji gel pen (rip). However; going forth I will taking more action to limit my waste production whether that be only taking electronic notes on my laptop/ipad or bringing my own personal cup, such as a KeepCup, to coffeshops (plus a lot of coffeshops offer discounts if you bring your own cup!).

I know not everyone can afford a tablet just to take notes on but even using old notebooks you haven't touched can mean something in the greater scheme of things. I know personally I have a tonnn of notebooks that aren't filled up. Not gunna lie, I could probably go another 5 years without purchasing another highlighter.

Together we can be more conscious consumers!

Also if you can't afford a tablet or prefer pen and paper, Rocketbook Everlast is incredible... It actually works and it's so sustainable, plus being able to upload your notes to the cloud and access them anywhere is so freaking nice! Best money I've spent, and I'm not looking for storage for hundreds of notebooks lol.

When you were totally 3 days behind on your to-do list because you procrastinated on your paper but then you GET IT ALL DONE! So proud of myself, so rewarding myself with a walk outside (my mom grew these roses and they are just stunning) and watching Sunday Night Football!

Did I start my paper a week ago because I was damned sure I wasn't going to procrastinate on it? Yes.

Is it due today and I'm just finishing it up? Yes.

Have I been in college for over 4 years and learned my lesson? Nooope.

Yay me. Welp hopefully this paper went well lol... It was super interesting to write about my opinions on gender neutral bathrooms even though it's a duh. I'm totally here for single occupancy bathrooms because there are articles on how it will lessen the "ladies queue" 🤣

This comment by my friend made my mind twirl a bit.

My immediate answer always feel like : “No!  Of course I dont LIKE studying.  It’s an obligation.” 

I feel like there’s almost a taboo to enjoy studying.

But when I actually take a moment to reflect.

I realize… I do actually like studying.

Not necessarily the moments before exams.  Not the cramming.  Not the few hours of sleep it gives me.  That’s not the moments I enjoy it most, I’ll admit.

But I do enjoy it for these reasons.

It has always been my escape.  My meditation, sort of speak.

From when I was young, I could give it my undivided attention.  No stress or anxiety of the outer world could bother me, because I was focused on the task at hand.

It gave me excuses while growing up for why I didn’t participate in some activities.  “Sorry, I need to study” was always there for me when I needed it. 

It let me be by myself.  

Headphones on.  World out.  

Dancing to good music while reciting texts.  

Excuses to go to cute coffee shops. 

It let me give all my focus towards something rewarding.

It cured my boredom (ironic, I know). 

And I see these things more clearly now that I’m at the end of my university (10 years later, you know…) 

Because when I feel bored, have nothing else to do…  I tell myself “maybe I should study”.

And I do.  And I get lost in the mix of it. 

It’s been such a crucial part in my life. 

And I will say it proudly now. 

I do enjoy studying.

It gives me joy, in some weird way.

And that, I will definitely embrace.

Have a break between my first two classes for the day so I've been studying outside the building my Microbiology class is at. It's a gorgeous patio area with tables and landscaping. The weather has been so nice lately that I just have to be outside. Loving all of my classes except Orgo Lab which I'm just tolerating at this point 😂 Can't believe this is my last semester of college! A little freaked out but pumped!
