what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at. 

this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.

the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…

Project Hail Mary is the best thing to happen to Hollywood xenobiology. I hope future sci fi movies try to one-up eachother in characterizing completely unearthly organisms after audiences cried so much over a hand starfish rock.

Can't wait to read or listen to the original novel now, knowing it has 10x the speculative science including way way more about the sun-eating microbes

oopsie i tripped and spilled my link to archive dot org's downloadable copy of Microsoft office suite for 2007, which features no AI tools and is a powerful word processor that still holds up just fine on windows 10!

An almost universal rule of militant vegans or animal rights peta types is that they only ever know a lot about animals if animal science is a separate special interest. They never ever EVER educate themselves about evolution or taxonomy or what food webs look like as an actual part of their animal advocacy. Most I've encountered do not know what "phyla" are, or what makes animal cells and plant cells that different, or where fungi go on the tree of life, or what actually constitutes plankton, or what pollinates other than bees and butterflies, or the difference between poison and venom, or any of the other day one basics any animal nerd child could tell them.

I've even run into people like this who have *disdain* for that knowledge, because they like to think none of the science is even relevant to their philosophy. They don't care what the difference is between an annelid and a mollusk, only that they're all animals, so don't eat them. They don't think it matters how all these things connect to their own existence or dietary habits.

Even if that knowledge would have zero effect on your beliefs, it is sad, alarming, downright embarrassing to profess to love animals and not have inherent curiosity in how they even work outside their utility to you as ideological props.

I was just looking up the various fonts used in Undertale to confirm something, and most of the answers were expected ones – Papyrus, Comic Sans, Wingdings, etc. – and then I got to the font used for displaying your stats in battle, and... well now.

(For those who are also learning this fact for the first time today, apparently the font used for stats in battle is a custom typeface originally designed for the 2010 indie Flash game Lesbian Spider Queens of Mars called "Mars Needs Cunnilingus". Imagine a skeleton named that.)

I clicked on this isekai anime (Apocalypse Bringer) just to see what the giant preying mantis was all about and instead got a less sleazy, more narratively interesting alternative to Overlord. Like Overlord, a guy gets reincarnated as the villain leader of his favorite fantasy RPG, and his second in command is a demon girl he was obsessed with from the game. But in Overlord, the main guy is the only one who knows it's a game, and the demon girl is like a brainwashed mind slave (as a plot point). In Apocalypse Bringer, demon girl is completely in on it with isekai guy, and it's written really cute!

Nobody else in the fantasy realm remembers being a video game, but she does, and she's delighted to have suddenly achieved sentience, even though she has no idea how or why it happened either. The two of them are equals who decide to play along with their villain roles from the game because they're not sure what else they can do, and because both of them are big nerds

The main guy has also shown absolutely zero horniness about any of this. Instead he just admires demon elf girl as a role model?

As soon as he's able to change clothes, he just wants to dress more like she does and sticks with it:

(which could mean anything) I'm probably making this sound too wholesome though. They ARE villains. They're stuck in a world where "alignment" is a tangible force, like it is in Dungeons and Dragons, and they definitely do Evil things. By just episode 5 you get to watch demon elf girl slowly torture a man to death with her tentacles (she has tentacles), and the man was more or less about to commit genocide, so I agree with her decision, it's just that you're left wondering whether she actually did it out of any care for the victims or because she'd have jumped on any permission to do a torture-murder on anyone at all.

I gotta say it feels like it's already tackling the topic of "evil" with a little more complexity than the aforementioned Overlord show. Haven't even gotten to the giant preying mantis. Fully invested in this guy's morally grey friendship with a Pinocchio'd video game monster.
