It’s a warm sunny summer afternoon and it’s been 9 months since Shadow died. His scientifically engineered disease took a toll on the whole family, but not as much as it did for Sonic. The blue hedgehog has been clinging onto his friends and children to stay mentally well during this time of grieving.
Somewhere along the way though, reality split. Timelines converged and the heart broken family witnessed a new face emerge into their front yard.
Danny laid flat on the ground groaning.
(ugh, what the hell happened??)
They looked up, the sun stung their eyes but as they blinked to restore their vision, they saw the house. And noticed... Papa!?
They had the urge to call to him but something felt off, not to mention the other kids that were with him. So Danny made a cautious move, pushing theirself off the ground and getting to their feet, they greeted them.
"Hello, I'm not from around here," they threaded a hand through their quills, "what do you call this place?" They asked with a smile.
As Danny sat back down near the kids, they listened to Sonic's story. The end of it left Danny wide eyed.
When they held the locket their heart broke. They knew that their Shadow was fine but he wasn't in this dimension. This family was missing a piece and Danny sympathised with that.
"Here, Papa." Danny returned the locket, placing it into one of his palms and closing his palm. "I know how much he means to you... I've seen it. Shadow loves hard and this locket is a symbol of that." They patted his shoulder. "I don't mind, plus this has happened a few times over the years that they aren't too scared anymore." Danny reminisced the times that had been transported to different dimensions, they had been all over the place, making friends and allies along the way.
Sonic gave a shaky exhale and watched his family. Now the family felt a little bigger. Sonic didn’t care who someone was or where they came from. Friends, acquaintances, those from other worlds, they were all still family.
“Daddy Shadow thought I was Auntie Maria.” Maria pouted, halfway through her muffin, “He wouldn’t play with me.”
“Daddy Shadow slept a lot.” Zephyr joined the pout.
“He was very sick.” Sonic reminded the kids.
The mutual pouting continued until they both lost interest in breakfast, “Can we play with Danny?” Maria asked.
“That’s up to Danny.” Sonic debated on a second muffin. He didn’t eat much these days, but he never turned down Amy’s baking.
Maria.
That name was significant to Shadow's life.
When they heard the kids talk about their daddy so sadly, it made something heavy sink into their gut.
They snapped out of it when Maria asked to play. "It's no problem, I can play with you." Danny chuckled turning to the younger hedgehog.
Maria took Danny’s hand and lead them to her room. The pretty princess decorated room was warm and inviting. Maira and Zephyr both dug into the toy box and pulled out a variety of items. Plastic dinosaurs. Small cars. Dress up items.
“I want to be the knight and you can be the fairy.” Maria said as toys strung across the floor.
“I’m the king!” Zephyr zipped up to the bed and started jumping. It was clear that Zephyr was the speedster of the two.
Danny looked around the room and smiled, it was cute and full of life.
As the kids dug toys out of the toy box, they thought of Cam. Yeah, his ass was annoying sometimes but he is the closest they have to a sibling.
When Maria gave them the role of fairy, Danny accepted it with open arms.
"Oh powerful king! What is your greatest wish? I am a fairy that will grant it!" Danny made a dramatic display like they loved to do with kids, feeding their imagination was always fun.
“I wish to be the Ultimate Lifeform!” Zephyr planted fists on his hips.
“No! I wish to be the Ultimate Lifeform!” Maria pouted.
“No, I am!” Zeph stuck his tongue out.
“I am the Ultimate Lifeform!” Maria almost screeched.
The request took Danny by surprise.
"uh, okay—" Danny was cut off by Maria.
As the two went on Danny's ears pinned back for they increasing volume. "Alright, Alright" Danny clapped their hands before planting a hand on each of their heads.
"You are BOTH now Ultimate Lifeforms." Danny ruffled their quills with a short mirth escaping their lips.
The littles pouted for a moment but then accepted Danny’s compromise.
“You can be the Ultimate Lifeform too!” Maria danced around in her little peach dress. “You have a Daddy Shadow too.”
Zephyr glared at Maria and Danny before returning to jumping on the bed, “Let’s save the princess!” His tone changed from his momentary expression.
"oh," Danny started, they smiled. (Guess that's true). Given they had black arms DNA, specifically Shadow's.
Danny took Maria's hand and spun her once, hearing Zephyr's declaration Danny pumped a fist. "yeah!"
🌅: Hi Danny, Its Dawn again! Thank you for your kind comments the other day you look pretty cool too!
Since you asked me a question it's only fair I ask one back! What's your favourite past time or hobby. Something fun you like to do?
Good luck for the showdown!

Hi Dawn!!
Wow, I'm ecstatic. Thank you so much ✨
Luckily for you, I've answered this here.
And Thank you, I think the pairings for round one are out. I wonder who I'm going up against...
🌅: Oh i'm sorry! Silly me I didn't even see that there! My bad!
Then allow me to return the favour you gave to me, what’s your favourite pastry?
It seems you're against someone called Topaz. I haven't had the chance to meet them yet, I wonder what they're like
It's alright.
Ohhh, Pastries! I love Pastries.
But nothing too sweet, I suppose. I like coffee beans like my daddy so a lot of coffee based treats are my jam.
My favourite pastry though has got to be apple turnover
And uh, about Topaz, I can't wait to meet them. Although I'm a bit nervous

hey Danny curious who’s ur favorite aunts and uncles?
My favourites are Auntie Rouge and Uncle Tails.
I love my other relatives but I've known Auntie Rouge and uncle Tails longer. I love making small additions to inventions that uncle Tails makes and Auntie Rouge has always taught me how to be confident in myself and also how to read people.
I think I maybe their favourite heh

Two little kids stood, curious about the newcomer. Sonic reached out and offered them a hand to get up, “Hi! I’m Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog. You are in Black Paw. It’s not much of a town but we care for each other.” Sonic attempted to sound like his chipper self.
Sonic helped the young one up and one of the littles, a black hedgehog who looks an awful lot like Shadow, looks up with wide eyes, “who are you?”
Amy watches all of this from a distance, keeping a close eye on the newly walking Jade. The tiny hedgehog takes a few unsteady steps before planting herself in the grass.
“My name is Maria!” The oldest of the trio chimes.
"Ah thank you Pa– uh Sir." Danny said awkwardly. (Ugh Cam! Where did you send me!?) Danny immediately noticed the absence of a certain black hedgehog, it was more obvious when the young black hedgehog asked who they were.
Then they saw aunt Amy with the youngest of the three kids and Danny almost squealed in joy at the baby.
When Maria came up and introduced herself, Danny almost saw Maroon, Uncle Knuckles and Auntie Rouge's daughter, in her. Her enthusiasm was infectious and adorable.
"My name is Danny," they squatted as they introduced theirself to Maria then stood to face Sonic, "I'm sorry for dropping in unexpectedly, there was a mishap with my uncle's invention," they stood firm as they explained.
“Where are you from? If you don’t mind me asking.” Sonic beamed.
In the midst of the grief, even Eggman’s brood had vanished from their typical activities. While it proved a nice break from world saving, Sonic struggled with the lack of excitement. Seeing a new face was just what he needed.
“Do you want to meet Jeffy?” Maria asked.
“Why don’t you come in and have some muffins. Perhaps we can figure out how to get you home? We can talk to Tails. I’m sure he’d enjoy the break from the hospital to help a wayward traveler.” Amy beckoned the family, picking up Jade and sitting the little on her hip.
The question caught Danny off guard, they organised their words in their head before they answered. "Quite far from here that's for sure. We live outside Central City, my dads and I."
Danny noticed Sonic's demeanour, he wasn't his bright, energetic self in this dimension. It was confusing but they guessed that it couldn't be helped.
Maria caught their attention again, "Jeffy? Sure, I'd like to meet Jeffy," they offered her a smile. They couldn't shake the feeling that Shadow was supposed to be there.
"Thank you, I would like that." They answered Amy before following Maria and smiling at baby Jade in passing.
“That’s funny. This little town isn’t far from Central City either.” Sonic said as they entered the house. “Our dimensions must not be that different then.”
The home opened up to the living room and just past the space was the kitchen. On the table was a spread of homemade muffins. Danny and the others sat down around the table. Maria picked up a plush mouse in a suit and tie and handed it to Danny. The mouse looked well loved. “I like Jeffy. He’s my best friend.”
Amy put Jade in her high chair and offered her some muffin. Zephyr climbed onto the table and began tearing one of the muffins apart.
Sonic sat down and looked at the chair that Shadow usually sat in. Before he could cave to sadness he refocused on Danny, “Who did you say your uncle was?”
"I guess not," Danny replied, entering the house which looked adequately lived in, they couldn't help but smile as they were ushered into a seat and soon a plush mouse was in their lap.
Maria introduced the plushie as Jeffy. Danny had a couple of plushies growing up but none really stuck, however Maria seemed to have loved the little thing hard. "You take good care of him it seems. I mean if I woke up to a smile like yours, I'd be happy all the time." Danny tapped Maria's nose.
Then their ears perked up to Sonic's question. "Oh! Tails! Tails is my uncle." They answered picking up a muffin and taking a bite. As they savoured the fluffy treat they just had to thank Amy. "Thank you Auntie, these are scrumptious," they giggle.
Sonic paused, then blinked. If Tails was Danny’s uncle then… “Who are your parents?” Sonic almost feared the answer.
Amy looked up from helping Jade with breakfast with the same anticipation.
Zephyr continued to scarf his muffin without question. Maria got to the table and reached for one herself.
Danny opened their mouth to answer then closed it. This Sonic didn't look so bright, in fact he seemed to have lost his light...
"Sonic and Shadow." Danny swallowed their muffin. Then they held their muffin tightly in one hand. "Is there something wrong sir?" Danny asked making eye contact with the duller Sonic. They needed to get to the bottom of why he is seems so shaken... It could be related to why he had a kid like that looked like Da–Shadow.
Sonic smiled. It was one of both joy and pain. This was his child from another world. One that he shared with Shadow. The thought that Shadow existed somewhere other than here both comforted him and filled him with longing, “You’re my child.” Sonic gushed.
“No nothing is wrong. It’s not something I want to burden you with.” Sonic wiped away a single tear.
“Daddy Shadow?” Maria stopped eating her muffin and looked up at Danny with big eyes.
“Yes, not your Daddy Shadow. Danny’s Daddy Shadow.” Sonic explained.
Sonic then sighed realizing that he would have to explain to the teen what happened.
"Yes, not biologically but Shadow brought me home one day. It's a long story." Danny looked down at their feet shyly.
Sonic's next statement was curious, then thealready proof enough that something was wrong here and they were determined to find out, they put the rest of the muffin in their mouth and swallowed it like nothing. They dusted their hands of crumbs then walked over to Sonic.
They stood close to him for the moment he talked to Maria then went in for a hug. "I know my papa likes hugs and I'm sorry for whatever has happened to you but you can tell me. I'm your kid after all."
Danny embraced their other dimension Papa with a smile. "You don't have to be strong all the time yknow." They whispered.
