Iâve binge-watched Twinkling Watermelon already and I have something to say about this post.
I actually related so much to Ha Eun Gyeolâs character. His family isnât pressuring him and will accept him for who he is. Yes, thatâs right. But do you realize that his father is actually telling all his friends about his child? That Eun Hoâs gonna play internationally and Eun Gyeolâs gonna become their familyâs doctor. I have been in that situation and I still am.
My dad keeps telling stories about me to his friends that I will be the next doctor in the family⊠that after 5 years, I will already have a clinic to work in because he will share his with mine⊠heâs not pressuring me but he is announcing that I will become the person he wants me to be.
Like in Eun Gyeolâs case. Remember when he told Yi Chan that he wasnât a doctor yet? And he was looking down/averting his gaze. That line, itself, you can tell all the pressure Eun Gyeolâs feeling.
A normal kid would want their parents to be happy. Eun Gyeol was persistently told that he was Yi Chanâs joy, trophy, and that all he has to do is to study!!! Do you not imagine the disappointment that will come if you said that your passion is something else? That you didnât want to study anymore?
Oh, but they will understand it because theyâre loving parents! âBut it isnât about the parents. Itâs about the child and in this case, Ha Eun Gyeol. Your parents gave you everything so at least all you have to do is to make them proud. âI know itâs a debatable statement but that must have been Eun Gyeolâs thoughts. Because it is mine.
And that conversation with his mom never sat right with me. What did she mean by âEun Gyeol will go back to being the Eun Gyeol they knowâ? Itâs an ambiguous sentence. We know that Chung Ah has gone through his stuffs lately so did she mean that Eun Gyeol doing music was not him? (Just like what Yi Chan said when he found out) And that pursuing the doctor path is the real him? Was that what Chung Ah wanted to say? Or did she merely want Eun Gyeol to have high grades again?
Not to mention, he is going to med school. Iâm not sure how much you know about med school man but itâs no joke. I took a year off because I wanted to think if med schoolâs for me. But in the end, I still did it. Because I didnât want to disappoint my parents. And now that Iâm in med school⊠hmm⊠it really is no joke man. đ You really have to sell your own soul if you want to pursue being a doctor.
Soooo, I just had to say a lot about this post because I related to Eun Gyeol a lot. I felt called out and invalidated when you said Eun Gyeol was being too dramatic. Mind you he is only 18 years old. Very young.
But med school aside, Eun Gyeol still had to deal with speaking for their family. You can see his conflict every time someone says something bad to his family. And also that time when Yi Chan wanted to say something to their landlord that Eun Gyeol had to interpret. You see, he was already doing this since he was a child. He was included in the conversation at a very young age that was meant to be for adults only. As a child, itâs hard enough to talk to intimidating and big adults, what more if youâre having a serious conversation with them? Itâs like youâre taking away his innocence. Youâre taking away his privilege to live a carefree and unproblematic life most children usually have. He grew up too early by knowing and handling most of their familyâs problem.
About the hiding learning music part⊠yeah, I agree, it wasnât necessary. But yeah, itâs probably because Eun Gyeol felt bad for them because he can enjoy music while everyone in his family canât. Maybe he didnât want them to feel left out.
