Pygmy raccoon conservation volunteer opportunities
Hello friends! If you have been wondering if there are other ways you can help with the conservation of the critically endangered pygmy raccoon, we have a few remote volunteer opportunities available!
Donor relations:
Managing donor list on Monday (a browser based work management platform)
Sending thank you messages
Creating and sending out newsletters with conservation project updates and fundraising emails
Ideally a long term position. You’d get a custom domain email address and access to canva premium, which is fun.
Grant writing:
Finding potential grant opportunities for conservation research and program development (We’re quite literally trying to build a sanctuary among other things)
Conducting research, collecting data, and developing background information for proposals
Developing and writing grant proposals
Can be a one-off thing, or a long term thing
Educational Materials Designer
Making educational posters/brochures/other graphics to target different groups about pygmy raccoon conservation issues
Can be a one-off thing, or a long term thing
You’d get access to canva premium if you were interested in this being a long term thing
Spanish Translator
Editing the shitty auto translate copy on the website
Potentially making WhatsApp calls to vendors in Mexico to get quotes for building materials and foods and whatnot
Translating educational material
Some more info: As we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit, this volunteering can be used for community service hours, or, if your company does paid volunteer days, those too. I’m happy to sign anything needed. Pretty much all of these opportunities can be a one off/every once in a while type volunteer thing, except for the donor relations, where I’d love to have someone help a little more regularly. It’s just become completely impossible for me to try to keep up with my research/permit applications/writing journal articles/paying for raccoon stuff in Mexico/etc on top of running the nonprofit needed to actually fund the work we are doing.
For anyone wanting to do something longer term, I would be able to get you access to a naturetourism.org email and canva premium. And if anyone has an idea for how to help out in a way not currently listed, just let me know!
Send me a message here on tumblr if you are interested in helping out! Or, if you know someone off tumblr who might be interested, they can contact me at [email protected]
roald dahl was antisemitic and misogynistic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife (and was racist as well as antisemitic!). hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think they bleed into the books so uh keep an eye out for that
the difference between these old white guys and jk rowling is that the former group is all dead. jk rowling is alive and using your money to oppress trans people
When I was in the hospital, they gave me a big bracelet that said ALLERGY, but like. I'm allergic to bees. Were they going to prescribe me bees in there.
So there's a medication called hyaluronidase. It's used to make other medications absorb better, because it makes the cell wall more permeable.
One common usage is to make local anesthetic more effective during surgery, for instance. It's used in a number of injected medications.
Bee stings contain an enzyme very similar to this medication, so sometimes, people with bee allergies have an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase.
This is called cross-reactivity, where your body mistakes something for the thing it's actually allergic to, and has an allergic reaction anyway. For instance, sometimes people with latex allergies also are allergic to bananas and other fruits. They don't actually contain latex, but there are some similar proteins.
Apparently, hyraluronidase used in humans is derived from one of four sources: sheep testicles, cow testicles, cow testicles again, and GMO hamster ovaries.
tl;dr: They won't inject you with bees, but they might inject you with purified cow testicle juice, and your body might say 'eh, cow balls are BASICALLY bees' and try to kill you anyway.
The world is full of such beauty and wonder. Thank you for that sentence.
ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
and now, the birds
Birds 1 and 2/14: Red Winged Blackbird, Male and female, Agelaius phoeniceus
Bird 3/14, American Robin, Turdus migratorius
hoo boy, ok *out of breath*
GIVE IT UP FOR BIRD NUMBUH 5, THE CANADIAN GOOSE, Branta canadensis!!!!
this guy took me about 4 days to completely finish, all of those freakingk coverts were a bear to render
speaking of obnoxious coverts:
bird 5/14, Bluejay, Cyanocitta cristata
the friggin stripes almost got me chat, i may not make it
Madam....
birds 6 and 7: American Goldfinch, Spinus tristis, male and female
pleasantly simple to paint! next is the flickerrrrr
*melts into goo*
BIRD NUMBER 8, (yellow shafted) NORTHERN FLICKERRRRR, Colaptes auratus
genuinely made me start questioning my sanity around day 3, it's half the size the of the goose, WHY did it take me 4 days to finish??
nothing but pain and suffering, i'm sure hope the next bird will be much easier and with FAR less barring :)
in other news, I am losing my mind hairline
SHE'S DONE!!
Bird number 9: Red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis
my chains are broken i am FREE. although i did have a great deal of fun with this, the barring on the wings itself took me like four days and i am READY to move on
this was a week and a half of continuous work so please excuse me for getting a little emotional in the bg 🙏
*does a little jig*
BIRD NUMBER 10!!! The Male Mallard Duck, Anas platyrhynchos
the male and female ones are gonna be posted separately bc they're taking a lot longer lol but yea! super happy i was able to capture the iridescent green of the head, i found metallic green and blue paint at a craft store that really made his head POP. it looks better in person i promise
ALSO!! As this is the 10th one, BIG announcement. The end is in sight!!!!! I plan to finish within the next 3 weeks and there will be a small dedication ceremony/ unveiling happening at the library to commemorate its completion on the 16th of May. If you live in the Western New York region and want to check it out for yourself shoot me a dm!
Also thank you everyone for your kind words and support throughout this whole process, it's been a genuine treat thinking there are potentially thousands of you out there cheering me on while I paint this 🥹
aaaand another one bites the duck,
we're movin right along with bird numero 11!! The lady Mallard!! Anas platyrhyncos
the 16th is looming in the distance so i'm trying to get thru these as quickly as i can so i can have as much time for the GBH as possible. i still need to do the names next to all of them so i've got about a week and a half to finish everything which is GREAT because i have adhd and nothing gets my ass in gear like a fuckin deadline, let me tell you
power couple that they are, here's bird number 12 and 13,
the Northern Cardinals, Cardinalis cardinalis
and NOW that they are complete, ITS GO TIME, in the next five days (library's closed for mother's day 😭😭) i need to have the GBH fully rendered, the names of the birds vectored, weeded, masked, applied to the wall, and then painted, plus additional cattails throughout. I may be able to get away with just getting the GBH done in time for the unveiling and then just have the names and cattails added later, but i'm gonna really try to get it all done in time. BUT, i have a plan. Part of why i take so long on these is because i really am just figuring it out as I do it lmao. there have been many a time where i am sitting on top of the ladder googling "how to paint birds" but I think if i take the time tomorro to do all that figuring out how to approach it beforehand, this will go a lot faster. I may also recruit some of my artist friends to help with the placing of the names... hrmm we'll see.
Anyways, shout out to the librarian who tracked down exactly the thing i needed so i could figure out where to place the highlights in my birds eyes, ur the real mvp
thanks for the reminder, kid
at long last, we've reached the end...
Bird number 14 out of 14,
The Great blue heron, Ardea herodius
thank you to everyone who reached out or got excited about this project, it genuinely gave me the fuel i needed to keep going. In total, the 480+ total hrs it took me to cover this wall pales in comparison to how long its expected to spend on there, hopefully imparting a sense of beauty and love for the natural world to the next generation and here's hoping i'm only getting started with these.
i'll see y'all soon :')
file -> phrases that are going to shift something in me forever
thats illegal people cant do that
refusing to talk about michael jackson, a black man born into poverty before the height of the civil rights movement and survived horrific child abuse at the hands of his father, who went on to become the single most famous man on the face of the planet because of america's growing imperial power using entertainment and popular culture to solidify the american myth, only for proveably false allegations to be made against him that he was advised by the fucking company managing his tour to settle out of court to keep touring instead of actually going to trial, not only proving it extremely profitable to make allegations against michael jackson but was used in a concerted effort to discredit him and his political and humanitarian efforts to protect children all over the world from everything from sexual exploitation to fucking food and water insecurity, making him a public laughingstock to the point that it deepened his addiction to prescription medications, and left him in the care of increasingly negligent doctors willing to supply that medication leading directly to his death by propofol overdose, is to refuse to talk about the reality of living in this country that even one of our biggest superstars could not escape the systemic problems that have worsened since his death, especially the systemic racism he was heralded as a triumph over.
i am not fucking kidding when i say that we need to either start being intellectually honest about michael jackson or we will never ever fucking reckon with any of the massive structures that built him, broke him, and fucking swept him under the rug
michael jackson's death should have been the fucking american breaking point. it should have been the straw that broke the camel's back, the proof that our celebrity structure kills people, our healthcare system kills people, our neglect of the mentally ill kills people, our stigmatization of the disabled kills people, our treatment of child abuse survivors kills people, our refusal to take child sex abuse seriously kills people, our racist attitudes kill people, our queerphobic attitudes kill people, hustle culture kills people, michael jackson's death should have been the moment we ripped the wallpaper away to realize the entire house was covered in fucking black mold.
all i can say is listen to fucking tabloid junkie.
“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know
[Image text: two tweets from orville perker @ literate_coyote. the first says “stone butch blues does not end with jess figuring out where exactly they fit between “butch lesbian” and “trans masc” but ends with them becoming a communist. organized labor and revolutionary politics is what saved them, not figuring out a specific identity. this is important.”
The second tweet says, “the book isn’t really about figuring out where you fit in this huge spectrum of labels (esp micro identities) but to find solidarity with workers like yourself, to organize along lines of shared needs like workplace safety or healthcare, because that’s how we get liberation.” End Text.]
Does anyone know where I can find this text because????? Holy hell that’s not happening

I fucking love when people give in-universe reasons for omegaverse shenanigans being a relatively new phenomenon and not just a fact of life. And this is probably my favorite out of all of them. Insane choice, and I want to kiss the author sloppy style about it.
As we all know, the Spanish Flu caused the omegaverse. Iconic.
A question I get asked a lot while working at a public library is "how do you deal with homeless people?"
And the answer is, we don't.
The unhoused people who come here seeking refuge 99% of the time understand that they will be kicked out if they misbehave.
The people you have to watch out for are Jessica, who only came because the kid she didn't want had to visit for a homework assignment and she just *needs* to yell at her child for asking to borrow two books or stay an extra five minutes, or Michael, who came in to look at porn on our computers for whatever fucking reason, or Karen who just wanted to come by to throw a fit that the particular book she wanted was checked out and harrass our staff about our collection being too limited.
99% of the time, the people we need to ban are middle to upper-middle class white people while the homeless and mentally ill/disabled people mind their own damn business and are honestly some of the best patrons we have.
I bring this up because today we had a man come in. He stopped at the desk, pulled up a chair and said "I'm newly homeless and was living in my car. I'm disabled. It was impounded. It's raining. I don't have a phone and I don't know where to go tonight."
And we did what we could to help. He was incredibly kind and patient despite his obvious anxiety and stress, more than most able bodied, housed patrons are to us under much less dire conditions. I liked knowing that we were the first place he came.
We have so many people like this who come in everyday. Many are quiet and keep to themselves, but sometimes they talk to us.
They tell us about how they're taking a few courses on a scholarship they applied for from our library's computer at the local community college to get their diploma. Or ask about a manga or dvd or book we might have to help them pass the time.
One woman, who comes in daily with her tattered walker always says hello to me and likes to work on the new jigsaw puzzle with me when we set one out.
So like, treat unhoused people like people. Treat disabled people like people. I don't want my library to feel like the only safe space in the world, but I'm glad it can be one of them.
I'm so sick of hearing about how "the homeless are ruining everything" when they are some of the kindest, most respectful people here. Sometimes they mutter, might not have had a place to shower, and might need a little extra space for their backpacks but that's FINE. It Doesn't Matter Actually. None of that is a problem or any of my business to care about (unless they request help/services), and I also don't think it's any of yours.
libraries provide vital and lifesaving services and i will die on the hill you have to let people who are mentally ill and disabled and homeless and politically disagreeable to you still access those rescourses. its simply too important to society
