I'm rewatching 09x01, and I can't help to think that the Gallagher's attitude toward Ian is problematic and a kind of heart breaking. Yes, Fiona tries to help him to go out of prison, but gives up when she notices that he's down and needs attention. There is her comment about his mental health, who shows she's uncomfortable with his bipolar. It's probably a way to take distance with a difficult situation, but it's so hard to hear combined with other comments on meds, on his psychiatrist history. When they understand Ian will need help to go back on his meds, that he is manic, Lip Debbie and Ford encourages Fiona to let him in prison. They simply give him up. And the serie proves that it is not a good thing for Ian, because it's out of prison that he can rebuilt and take his accountabilities for what he did. I don't agree either with Lip firing Fiona from the house later in the season. But, his siblings leting Ian down in 09x01 is particularly sad, particularly when they understand they will have to take care of him. Fiona isn't maybe the best person to be there for hem, unable as she is to separate him from Monica, but Lip would have make a effort, maybe. In later episodes, we see him being there for Ian in a constructive way, and it's maybe a mild comfort. In the background I'm happy Mickey came back, for many many reasons, but also because he will be that person who will support Ian, even if he acts weird, even if he need someone to give him his meds every morning, every night. I know the Gallaghers have their reasons, that it's self protectiveness, but...
