Sometimes I go to myself "you know, I don't understand what NFTs are" and then I go look it up again and discover, yes, actually I do know what NFTs are. It's just that every time I read about them again I'm left going "this CAN'T be it, there has to be something else to make this make sense" and the answer is always no.
Seriously though, I still don't get what they are. Can someone give me a dumbed down version so I can understand them????
okay so NFTs are a form of cryptocurrency, which runs off a giant, constantly updated, encrypted data register
imagine someone somewhere has a huge whiteboard, and whenever anyone makes a cryptocurrency transaction, they have to write it down on the whiteboard. except, instead of just adding it to the bottom, they have to rewrite the entire list with the new one attached. also they have to do it in code. and this has been happening since cryptocurrency started so the list is really really big
and this is why cryptocurrency is such a problem for the environment, because to rewrite lists that big and complicated, people now need whole warehouses worth of computers running constantly all day every day, chewing up more electricity than some countries, and making computer parts really hard for normal people to buy because they're all being destroyed through overuse
NFTs run on the same system. except instead of updating the whiteboard to say "this person owns 100 fake dollars" or whatever, the whiteboard now says "this person owns this thing i made", and everyone knows this, because they're all rewriting the list over and over and over again every time anyone buys anything
i believe it originally started as a way to preserve ownership of digital art, because a real problem for digital artists is if you make something and post it, someone else can steal it and remove your signature and sell it, without you getting any money for your hard work
if you sell it as an NFT, though, everyone who can buy it knows it's yours bc the whiteboard says so, and if they try to resell it, you get a little bit of the money
you may have noticed the flaw in this though, which is that this affects absolutely nothing for people who don't own the whiteboard
(and, you know, the environmental disaster)
so this got picked up by rich guys who like cryptocurrency, and they've turned it into essentially a digital trading card/collectibles game - we get the computer to make unique images, and then if you pay me $8000, you own the only copy of that image, so you're winning
and we know it's yours bc we all have the whiteboard that says so
and apparently rich guys fall for this bc they have more money than sense and they like the idea of owning something no one else in the world has
of course, then they go and post the image
and people go "okay but i can just right click save this and own exactly what you do without paying $8000"
and then they get mad bc no that's not the point and you don't own it the whiteboard says i do
and some people make millions producing fake trading cards for these guys to buy while the rest of us would like them to stop ruining the environment now
So, Microsoft is terrible. Yes yes, the oldest claim in the world.
But specifically... I just hate how Windows 10 tries to conflate and confuse web searches with things on one's own computer. The start menu should never do anything related to web-searching, especially if it purports to try to give examples of things that are on my hard drive!
This will make old, computer-illiterate people more malware-vulnerable. You have to maintain a strong distinction between "things that are on this computer (and maybe even included in Windows)" (safe, one hopes, or you already got pwned by it, probably), and "things on the web" (scary, dangerous, not to be trusted at all).
Eroding that barrier in the UI is awful. It just FEELS like a violation every time I start typing into the start bar, and it tries to show me ANYTHING web-related. My computer is NOT just an internet-portal! It has tons of stuff on it, and when I'm interacting with the OS, I ONLY want to see things that are already on here!
If I wanted to see something online, I would go to my browser! All the online stuff should be segregated into the browser!
Specific programs can access the internet; that's fine. But my OS's functions and interface should JUST be about the things that are already on my computer.
#someone in the notes mentioned shut up windows 10.
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10Â
i havenât used this myself but iâll be looking into it
Literally spent multiple hours lobotomizing my Windows reinstall when I upgraded recently, the amount of awful shit they had in nowadays makes me long for the age of win98, when software was merely bad, rather than actively harmful.
the exact setting in shutup10 for this issue is "Disable extension of Windows 10 search with Bing" it's at the very bottom under misc.
There are 2 programs that will turn Windows 10 from an advertising riddled, bloated mess into a useful tool.
10AppsManager
With one click, this will remove ALL THE BLOATWARE Windows comes with. Seriously, you need NONE OF THESE apps, and if you do, you can just uninstall all the ones you don't need individually.
Winaero Tweaker
This program will give you almost complete control over Windows 10's behavior. Disabling the web search in the start menu, op rightfully complained about, is just one of the many things this thing can do
For example, with a single setting you can turn off any ads from microsoft, system-wide
It is a powerful tool, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily every single setting comes with an explanation about what it actually does, and most settings can be easily reversed.

Hi Mr Gaiman, the children's literature class I'm taking is doing a banned book week and teaching us about reasons why people end up getting their books banned. One of the common reasons was because an author, despite doing their research, wrote about something they personally did not experience (ie a white person writing children's books teaching them about the history of MLK, or making their protagonists disabled when they personally never experienced it)
What do you think about this? Do you think people should only write about things that they personally experienced (like only write what you know) or should everyone be free to write anything as long as they did their research?
I think whoever told you that didnât do their research on why books are banned and on what books get banned. Hereâs the ALA, who run banned books week, and keep track of that sort of thing.
https://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks/statistics
They do visual guides to what challenges were received and what was being challenged and what the top ten most challenged books were â here are a couple of the most recent up on that siteâŠ
me, an autonomous adult in college: *looks up tips for managing adhd on a deadline*
every single result: AS A PARENT to help YOUR CHILD WITH ADHD monitor YOUR CHILD'S behavior and reward HIM for doing work because CHILDREN WITH ADHD need constant support-
I'm not even exaggerating.
YEP. As far as I can guess, we're supposed to either "grow out of it" and become perfect facsimiles of neurotypical people, or else assumed to be so impaired we're incapable of living independently or using the internet. That we might be adults reading this shit doesn't occur. The only people who actually talk about ADHD to people with ADHD are ... people with ADHD.
Something I learned talking to other adults with adhd is to get into routines - but not like, wake up, exercise, breakfast, then work sort of routines; but more
Wake up to your phone on the other side of the room so you're forced to get out of bed to grab it and do your morning scroll for social media
Have your meds in a visible area like in the fridge next to the milk or juice that you drink every morning or beside the coffee pot so you take them with your morning coffee
When you want to do homework, tidy your space, get a drink, put shoes on, then start work - do this every time until your brain registers the physicality of that routine of tidy, drink, shoes to equal 'work now'
If you have a pet, feed them around the time you want to have dinner each night - that animal will register the routine and help you stick to it.
Want to remember something but apps, reminders, and notes don't seem to work? Write them on your bathroom mirror or buy a whiteboard and stick it in your kitchen. And dont write in black - write in your favourite colours,or in multiple colours, and don't deny yourself the chance to be silly with the whiteboard. If you designate it a work only space, you'll never use it - so draw on it, write quotes on it, be silly with friends. The more you use your whiteboard, the more likely you are to read the important reminders on it. :)
People with ADHD need routine but neurotypical routines don't work for us because a lot of NT routines inherently rely on having the executive function to get moving - we don't have that. We need mental triggers to spark that, something that grounds us in the moment and helps spark the intention into productivity.
.
Also, hack for motivation to clean?
Set a timer. How many things can you clean up in the space of five minutes. Race that clock. Get free serotonin in beating a timer while also maintaining your space.
I donât remember what wonderful person noticed this but since ADHD was thought of as a boysâ and young menâs problem for so long there was an expectation theyâd grow out of it, and maybe the reason their symptoms seemed to vanish on adulthood was because adulthood coincided in most young men with getting married to a woman whose duties initially chiefly concerned organizing his life.
Since women and girls have only been getting the Dx for so long, thereâs no track record indicating it doesnât spontaneously resolve in most of the affected population.
A lot of times âRoutineâ is said like it means a plan of things youâre going to do and when youâre going to do them. Like: 8:30, shower. 9:00, prepare breakfast. 9:15, eat breakfast. EtcâŠ
^^^^This? Is an absolute fucking disaster for people with ADHD.
The kind of âroutineâ that helps with ADHD is different: itâs linking together tasks in the day.
Instead of working out a specific time slot in which to do all your Tasks, you just do this: âThis week, Iâm going to try to make breakfast right after my shower, while my hair is dryingâ
If you want to organize your life as a person with ADHD, start with something you do reliably do every day (or almost every day) and try to link another task onto it, a small one.
Please, please, please do not try to work out your ENTIRE schedule all at once. Youâre just building a chain: start with two links, then three, and so on.
This means you donât have to gather the mental effort for each individual task, you can just ârideâ the current activity, and you can get on the train at any time.
So, if youâve gotten fuckall done all day, but you still remember to brush your teeth before bed, and you usually take your meds right after that? Youâll probably also remember to take your meds.
âThe sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but the wide worldâs joy.â ~Henry Ward Beecher
