idk theres something really very..... idk annoying i guess is the best word that heated rivalry is getting categorized as the "teehee gay sex show with a side of plot" when like. idk! to me yes there's (gay) sex on this show, but none of it feels gratuitous or there just to be the Gay Sex Show. the plot happens during the sex scenes, yes, but also during the (many) other scenes.

the point is not that ilya and shane exchange blowjobs, its that shane is inexperienced and ilya isnt. its that ilya is emotionally distant, and shane wants to talk. the point of their montreal scene isnt that hehehe they finally fuck and in different positions too lololol; its that ilya is kind and empathetic to shane during their first time having penetrative sex and shane trusts ilya. the point isnt that ilya wants shane to masturbate in front of him; its that ilya is so scared of his feelings for shane that he doesnt even trust himself to touch him (and when he does, he keeps up his emotional barriers by not allowing himself to see shanes face, not kissing him, not cuddling afterwards, etc). and so on and so forth.

like every sex scene between them furthers the plot and helps the viewers understand their relationship and the character's emotional states at the time. its literally the only way for a long time these characters feel safe connecting with each other. its all important!

and not to be this person but it feels particularly heinous to turn a story about fear and self-oppression and trauma into a LOL Sex Joke during a time when conservatism and anti-LGBTQ attitudes are on the rise. but thats probably a different post altogether.
