my dearest med student, do you have any ideas and knowledge on what draken's recovery from his stab wound might be like? his surgery, placeholders during recovery, etc? i've had some quick googles but i'm wondering if you have any ideas from first-hand knowledge in the profession

Hello! To clarify I currently am a premed student! Not quite a medical student yet though I am going to start the application process very soon. What I have is more so of secondhand experience asking medical professionals since I am currently shadowing for physical therapy. Though, from my observations Wakui got his recovery process down pretty accurately (other than the spitting up blood thing). Clean stab wounds tend to close up surprisingly quickly (a couple weeks) with stitches even if the full scarring process takes longer, and he shouldn’t really have any permanent lasting consequences other than a scar, especially since he’s young and his body can heal quicker.

I’ll have to reread that part of the manga to see 1) where exactly he got stabbed for more specific information regarding potential nearby organs 2) if they immediately wake him up the day after surgery, but if they did it suggests that the medical professionals did not dignify that the damage was severe enough to keep him under (to keep him still) for an extended period of time.

Ofc he would be told to go relatively easy on it during the healing process (not so much stress and physical movement but he’s in a gang & definitely not going to listen lol), but overall he should be fine unless he opens the stitches. 100% an asshole move for Mikey to hit him directly in the spot he got stabbed btw😭😭.

Though, I can ask the physical therapists I’m shadowing later on today about specifics.

Hello @solarsaurus-rex, I can now give you a definitive answer to your question according to one of the physical therapists that I’m shadowing.

Since Draken got stabbed in the stomach, he would have to get carted off to the gastro department to undergo surgery for gastrointestinal repair. It shouldn’t be anything too muscular, but his recovery in the hospital would focus around abdominal strengthening; and the full time would take around six weeks for the tissue and the muscle to fully heal.

Something interesting that I learned was that they would input something called a “PEG (percutaneous endogastric) tube” into his stomach so that his body can intake food while bypassing oral passageways, and maybeeee an NG (nasogastric) tube, (which is another form of tube feeding that goes through the nose instead of the abdominal walls), depending from case to case. One of the focuses of his time inpatient would involve weaning him off the PEG tube so that he can eat again.

Also, PT was not entirely sure what you meant by “special placeholders” but assumed you meant if there’s anything special done outside his recovery in the hospital; in which, there wouldn’t be anything in particular other than teaching him breathing techniques due to a weakened diaphragm, like training breathing for lifting heavy objects and holding breath to hold pressure in the stomach.

Overall since Draken is young he should make a good recovery without suffering permanent consequences, potentially besides incontinence, though that depends on if Kiyomasa stabbed him in the bladder.

apparently there is some twitter tiktok discourse about the football championship in the US bc apparently they're price gouging public transport (which shouldn't be possible but I guess everything is possible) and then european football fans were like "well it's just a mile from the parking lot to the stadium so we are just going to walk"

and locals pointed out that they would have to cross a six lane freeway and then the european fans doubled down that the cars are just going to stop if it's thousands of people crossing the freeway and the americans were like "It's New jersey no they're not going to stop????" (I mostly summarise what I've seen other people summarise)

jokes on you, as a football hater I'm more hyped for european football fanatics vs. americans in cars than watching the actual games

Forget everything this is so beautiful

It's been amusing to watch US Americans freaking out because people from countries that actually make sure to provide free/affordable public transportation for big events like this to prevent this exact scenario from happening won't just accept it and spend precious hours of their vacation sitting in traffic.

My city makes sure the public transport connections to the big stadiums and concert halls run basically nonstop after big events and some countries have also made it free for events like FIFA. That's what most avid soccer fans are used to. From much poorer countries too.

Americans are just way too used to being treated like shit, it's sad. The ability to walk places is the barest of bare minimums an urban environment should provide.

Also, judging by the notes on this post, it also seems like Americans view their fellow countrypeople as wild animals who will just mow over anyone who gets in their way with their big ass cars with no remorse and can't control their impulses.

Meanwhile, the Europeans just saw them as people and figured that they could be trusted to act like any other person would.

Sounds like that might fully just be a you issue 👍

Oh Americans will def run you over. Shit they’ll run you over at a crosswalk with the right to cross. I’ve seen them try with wheelchair users and even two different people two dif cities BLIND PEOPLE WITH CANES (Chicago and la).

I’ve also seen Americans think they have rights to handicap seats on the subway when they take it for sportsball. Even when people with canes are forced to stand (me. La and nyc).

The only way this scenario works if it’s enough people they can’t be mowed over without it being a massive international bloodbath

I'd probably get myself in trouble quickly in the US because I've lived my entire life in countries where you can step on the road at a zebra crossing with no traffic light and usually wait no more than a minute before a car stops for you. They might even give you a nod if you look unsure about crossing.

I tend to trust that the people around me don't want to kil me. It's sad to see how many people do not have that very basic sense of safety and trust in others. That must be terrifying. To have to live like that.

It also is weirdly regional? Where I grew up, you could indeed start walking across a multilane road and oncoming traffic in the other lanes would stop for you, especially if it's a spot without a crosswalk nearby. They'll be annoyed if you do it suddenly enough that they were taken a bit off guard, but they will stop.

And then I went to college in Utah. There was a grocery store 3 blocks from my apartment, but you had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get there. There was no light, but there WAS a crosswalk. It was basically the main street of the city. One of my roommates got hit crossing that street because the drivers would fully see you coming IN THE CROSSWALK and keep going. You had to go an extra 2 blocks north or south to get to a light if you wanted to cross safely without having to wait 5-10 minutes for a gap in traffic.

This was a WILD culture shift for me. People out there look at you like you're crazy if you're walking around on the sidewalk. A driver threw a bottle at me once. For walking on the sidewalk. All of America is pretty car dependent, but the REALLY car dependent areas are SCARY as a pedestrian.

I fully believe that if you spend too much time in a car, you are not fully socialized and essentially feral. Like a dog that spends most of its day in a cage and never gets taken for walkies.
