hello oomf i adore your art so much and i wanted to ask, since you always put details of each piece in your captions, what are are the big art inspirations you have? whether thats classic artists or other fanartists online etc.. and if there are any details you've put into certain pieces that people might not have noticed!
Aaaa so lovely as always! I think I’m going to answer this in sections and I fear it may be rather long and ramble-y but I hardly ever get asks so you’ll have to indulge me.
To start with I wouldn’t say that any of my art is directly inspired by the work of others just yet, as I’ve only just started being able to illustrate the ideas in my head beyond direct studies. However with baby steps I hope to be able to experiment with bolder colours and more surrealist pieces, and these will be inspired by a lot of the artists I like here on Tumblr. I often spend time scrolling my dash looking at everyone’s lovely work instead of getting on with my own stuff, and some of my favourites include corrodedparadox, feefal, taurzza, onyxcyon and of course all the wonderful artists we have in our own fandom! Like I say I’m not sure how obvious these inspirations are but as I become more confident maybe this will become more apparent, we’ll have to see.
The other main way I’ve been introduced to new artists and had them incorporated into my work is through studying different traditional (though I wouldn’t say classical) artists during my art gcse, some of my favourites here were Jack Carden, Grayson Perry andOliver Jeffers (LOVE Oliver Jeffers. Staple of my childhood and probably contributes to why I gravitate to using only the 6B pencil for my digital pieces and why I don’t use the blend tool). We did projects in which we had to be purposely inspired by these people and I do think it helped, though I won’t post examples of my coursework for fear of being shot by Edexcel /j. I’ve also just had lots of opportunities to visit art museums and be exposed to large amounts of different art styles which I’m very grateful for.
I’m also a big fan of scientific drawings and reconstructions of extinct animals as well as beautiful old detailed maps (one of my gcse projects was just an excuse for me to sit an look at old illustrated maps) so hopefully I can incorporate those into my art soon too.
As for extra details in my art as I’ve mentioned I’m rather new to my own compositions so there’s not a lot I’ve been able to put in, especially as I tend to get bored of my pieces near the end and want to move on to my next idea (bad mindset I know, I’m working on it) so as of yet there isn’t much. I do always make Monty’s ring shine which I did more subtly on the most recent piece but aside from that there’s not much. I’m not a very subtle person and if I put in a fun detail I would want people to know and would write about it in my little blurb thing I always do under the cut, which apparently you read which is cool I didn’t think anyone really bothered with that. I will say that as a final thought on art influences the smoke trail in my Alex!Monty piece is definitely because of the artist Little White Monster who is another artist that I love, please go look at their work and the work of all the others that I listed if you haven’t already.
