I could say that realizing every artist's dream of completing a project like this wasn't easy, and while it's true, I must thank you all once again for encouraging me with your sweet comments and messages. It's thanks to you that a one-part punchline became a full 202 pages (!!!) story.

I know it's said a lot by many many people in fandom, but it always bears repeating: leave comments on AO3 fics.

Leave comments -

- even if you've left a comment on every other chapter (it's not weird or obsessive, the author probably developed a crush on you by the 5th or so comment);

- even if the fic has been finished and published for years (fanfic exists in a dimension where time doesn't exist; yesterday, six months ago, ten years ago - it's all the same);

- even if the fic is unfinished and the last update hasn't been posted in years (the author still cares, whether they plan to finish or not - it's still nice to know that there's still someone out there who enjoyed / is enjoying it);

- even if all you say is "Kudos!" or a heart symbol or something seemingly "insignificant" (it's not insignificant; just the fact that you took the time to open the comment box makes the author happy);

- even if you've left a comment / comments before and you're back for whatever reason to re-read (what? you've read it already and you want to read it AGAIN? and you're leaving a comment to say so? the author has passed away from delight);

Etc.

I just think that if you're in fandom spaces, it's so so important to let people know you enjoyed a thing they made. It makes people feel good, feel valued, and feel motivated to make more things. It strengthens communities and builds positivity. And it's the only way to defeat the robots - nevermind, that's another post.

So yeah. This post is for whoever needs to hear it.

Too Shy to Comment on Fanfic? Don't know what to say? - Start commenting on fanfic a quick guide

Tips for comments for when you want to give an author love but don't know what to say.

1 emojis are your friend! hearts, blushing faces, happy faces, etc etc go nuts with the emojis

2 keep it simple - a quick "omg love this!" is amazing. You do not have to write an essay for the author to get the message

3 smut - if you are shy to comment on smut a simple "Hot *sweating emoji*" gets the point across ;)

4 Rereading - if it's a fic you come back to comment "re-reading this!" the author will know you came back because you loved it so much

5 character name + keyboard smash - this really can capture that feral emotion that sometimes overtakes us. If you don't know how to express it in words, incomprehensible screaming will do

6 dark fic - I have found a lot of the time people really don't know what to say when they read dark fic. I feel like sometimes people feel awkward saying "oh this was good I loved it" on things covering darker topics. So instead something along the lines of "this really made me think" or "very very interesting character study"

7 what happens next - instead of simply asking for the next chapter, trying leaving a quick prediction or worry about what you think might happen. "Omg no please don't die blorbo" or "I think blorbo is going to find a way to mess this up next chapter"

8 do not read other comments first - This isn't what to say so much as it's what not to do. One comment isn't better than the others, if someone left a thoughtful essay do not let that intimidate you away from keyboard smashing and emoji commenting, trust me the author will appreciate both. It's very much an "omg two cakes!" situation.

As an author I can say that any and all types of comments are very much appreciated and super motivating. You do not need to have the perfect comment, just say something <3

no actually im not done about dick and jason faking jason's death after he comes back to gotham to piss off bruce. i think that should be a thing they do a lot. i want jason to be like mcu loki; he and dick fake his death so much after jason is publicly revived that the entirety of gotham just stops caring. it becomes a matter of small talk. 'do you know what the weather is like tomorrow?' 'oh not sure, sorry.' 'any idea if jason todd's alive at the moment?' 'well he was alive last weekend but i think somebody mentioned him dying again for a while on friday, so probably not for long.' 'ah.'

it gets to the point where bruce will be mid-speech at a charity event when 'jason's body' will fall dramatically from a balcony and he'll 'die' in the middle of the event and the livestream of the speech will just catch an off-screen crash, bruce dead-eyed staring into the crowd The Most unimpressed ever, and then bruce dryly continuing his speech while dick grayson's dramatic-ass wails of grief are echoing faintly in the background, which nobody at the event seems to be batting an eye at.

dick and jason got together one night and realised that the best way to lessen the trauma of jason dying for the two of them was exposure therapy and they just decided to start having fun with it.

If I was a writer at dc I would write about a random man who moved to Gotham. He goes about his daily life. Home, shopping, work, then back home. Every night he watches the news and sees "this just in (villain of the week) has just attacked. X injured and X dead." He slowly gets more and more scared and eventually buys a gun for his own protection. After months of living in horror it comes to a head as he hears twisted laughter. He sees the joker laughing as he stands over a bloody child. And before batman can arrive a gunshot rings out as the joker falls over dead.

The man never gets named. He won't show up in any future comics (except as a background character.)

It would be a simple way to get rid of the modern joker that has strayed far part his original purpose. And it forces batman to realize that not everyone likes his no killing rule.

all of these seemingly pro-women anti-men sentiments stem from beliefs produced and enforced by toxic masculinity; as such, misandry is often really just misogyny in disguise.

-the idea that men are inherently terrible only serves to excuse men for being terrible. because, hey, they can't help it, so why bother trying, right? part of holding men accountable for their awful actions is believing they can in fact be better.

-the reason "not all men" is so frustrating to hear is because it's often used in poor faith to derail much needed conversations about toxic masculinity and how it manifests, not because the phrase itself is untrue.

-continuing from the trans men thing, misandry can and does make it harder for trans men to come out, for fear of the aforementioned responses.

-yes, misandry can stem from trauma at the hands of a man. that's understandable, but trauma can reinforce a lot of prejudices, and we all have a responsibility to understand how we come to believe things and mind ourselves accordingly. that doesn't mean you need to hang around men all the time, nor does it mean you're wrong to feel the way you do about what men did to you - it just means recognizing the objective line between fact and feelings, and recognizing that you don't need to conflate the two to validate your feelings. "i am uncomfortable around men because of past experiences shared by a lot of women" is different from "men are all horrible irredeemable pieces of shit and need to die".
