lord of the flies is a depressing and violent book but its also so fucking funny when you think about it like. in a meta way. the author was a teacher at an all-boys school that hated every kid he taught and was SO sick of the ‘brit kids go on adventures’ genre that he wrote a full-length novel about them absolutely LOSING it and also every kid in the book was based off a kid in his class. like if that isnt the most hilarious shit ever

It’s so weird how LotF is framed as simply “laws good anarchy bad” and Jack and his crew are seen as these lawless heathens but…….. Jack does set down some kind of rules, establishes rituals, and gives orders and shit, and was much more strict about it than Ralph ever was, because he actually punishes people (i.e. Wilfred) for “breaking” them.

And look at this shit:

This isn’t chaos. If anything this is a weird fascist cult with Jack as the figurehead, framed by him as a “there are no rules” space where the kids can do whatever, but actually a “we do have rules and it’s basically do whatever Jack says or else he’ll beat the shit out of you” space. And it makes sense considering Jack’s “We’ve got to have rules, lots of rules” at the beginning, and him forcing the choir to keep their robes on in the sweltering heat until Simon faints. It’s form over function for him. He doesn’t care about anything else, he just wants to keep his position of power over his unified little stormtroopers. And it makes sense to have a villain like that, considering Golding’s service in WW2…
