Theta stops, still as a tense statue made of skin and bone, the moment she sees the silhouette in the glow of the TARDIS console. She blinks her eyes slowly, almost comically so.

Once.

Twice.

Three times before her eyes focus on him properly and even then, her mind refuses to process it as factual. As reality. As truth.

Her fingers twitch at her sides as she calculates the inevitable consequences of launching herself at him. She knows he'll catch her if she takes that leap. She'll send them both sprawling to the grating of the TARDIS beneath their feet, and maybe he'll hate her or maybe he'll laugh or maybe that's exactly what he wants her to do...

But she doesn't have the courage or the strength.

"Haven't dreamt in a century. Maybe two..." The words are muttered, broken in the middle by a quivering breath that escapes through parted lips as emotion thickens her throat. Her face pulls inward, scrunching between the eyebrows as she wages a losing battle to keep her expression neutral.

Bypass engages, and her fingers twitch at her sides again as forward motion resumes, slow and calculated footfalls bringing her toward both the console and The Master. The ancient and sacred telepathic bond that they share, long since silent and unmoving, gives a very distinct, inky-black shudder with the words she doesn't say.

I don't know what I'm doing. I never did. I need you. Stay.

SO. I did the thing.

My muses for IWTV (interview with the vampire), TVL (the vampire lestat) and QOTD (queen of the damned) are so incredibly strong that I've decided to edit my multi-fandom blog to house only my Vampire Chronicles muses for the foreseeable future.

Laughter.

That's the first thing that would reach The Doctor's ears as she asks that deliciously irritating question. The sound of The Master's laughter is full, genuine, almost raucous in nature and it's accompanied by the tap-tap-tap-tapping of his fingertips against the back of the sturdy wooden chair that he's bound to.

The look on The Doctor's face is almost comical- eyebrows pinched together with creases in the middle, corners of her mouth turned downward in a display of disappointment combined with a sprinkling of betrayal, disgust and shame.

Or guilt- but he very much doubts it.

The laughter comes to a sudden halt and his mercurial expression shifts into one of cold calculation, only the corner of his mouth remaining upturned to betray the still-simmering anticipation. He looks at her, mind whirring while his body remains motionless, an aching contradiction. He wants to lash out. He wants to gnash his teeth and claw and scream, but he doesn't. There's far too much at risk.

"Escape?" He begins, his eyebrows lifting in a mockingly innocent way. He lets the word linger until she's just about ready to fill the silence herself before he speaks again. "Is-- Is that what you thought I was trying to do? Essssscape? Hmm? Come on, Doctor, use your imagination! Think! Think! THINK!"

His voice rests somewhere firmly between mocking remorsefulness and bitter, sharp resentment. He bites his bottom lip and drags in a deep sigh, just before the sound of someone screaming echoes through the expanse of the warehouse. A moment later The Master's laughter begins anew.

I agree with this post...

But I reconcile it by reminding myself that the established canon is that the TARDIS only translates written and spoken languages (aside from Gallifreyan, which it never translates due to security protocols). There's no actual protocol for non-spoken, non-written languages since the TARDIS can only translate for people who've already ridden in it.

So even if the TARDIS did translate sign language from English into Spanish or Latin, it wouldn't actually help unless the person the companion was communicating with also knew sign language. If they didn't, they still wouldn't understand what the companion was trying to say to them. Translating between two people who already use sign language is the best the TARDIS can do.

I have the feeling if the writers did try to change that bit of canon, they'd do so by using an idea that's completely ableist or humiliating or erases the differently abled person (like having to write instead of sign, or somehow making the person able to speak/hear, or telepathy bs, or having a voiceover or scrolling closed captioning appearing somewhere near the companion).

I mean look how careless they were when it came to The Master being a person of color and Thirteen just HANDING HIM OVER to the notsee party during WWII… Big Yikes.
