Cultural contradictions are not only narratively important for character and story writing, but also for believable and interesting worldbuilding. People being people, ideals and behaviours are going to clash, contradict each other and create tension. This isn’t bad worldbuilding, it makes the people of your cultures feel more sincere and also more fun to right.

Some personal examples from one of the cultures of my current worldbuilding project:

- My culture’s ‘thing’ is that they’re season bound maritime sailor-warriors whose lives revolve around surviving monster attacks to keep their trade routes alive, and everyone takes that ‘job’ very seriously. But on the other hand, they love the arts (poetry, music, dancing, painting/graphic design) and dote on their domesticated animals with open affection (respecting and appreciating work is important almost to the point of being sacred to them). During the winter months when the sea monsters migrate further down south after breeding/hatching their young, the islands all come together to throw a huge celebration that lasts weeks and is a mixture of practical things like preparing for winter/spring, building social connections and rewriting trade agreements+general alliances AND ALSO much needed long form leisure time and friendly competition (artistic, athletic, psychological) to keep their skills sharp during the rest period and establish their ‘new year’s face’ to the other islands. They work hard and play hard, to a schedule that fits their ‘life is generally predictable and can be managed with preparation’ philosophy.

- They have strict taboos around death and the handling of corpses, forbidding the desecration of a corpse and granting proper funerary rites even to those lost at sea with no body to tend to. HOWEVER, there is an exception made for the dead bodies of animals, babies and children under a certain age (those who have not earned their ship title and only go by their given name and a surname that changes depending on island). These people are tampered with by draining their blood before normal burial rites because from blood you get mana, which through a process similar to smelting can be hardened into a powerful anti-magic material useful for infrastructure and tools. Losing a child is seen as both a tragedy and an honourable opportunity to keep their memory alive by using their mana to help the living survive, simultaneously. Every adult aged person has to participate in an opt-in system for post-mortem mana harvesting whose barriers to entry include class and legal differences between island. Also there’s a sub-order of the clergy-alchemists who may or may not rob the graves of adults to harvest and process their mature elemental mana back into its anti-magic form, regardless of the consent of their families, and this may or may not be the kind of secret hypocrisy that leads to any outsider who finds out being silenced.

- They’re very practical/realistic forward thinkers, always generally casting their minds to the future and using the past as stepping stones, lessons or for predictions. Despite it not being something magic can actually do in this world, people from this culture are generally the most ardent believers and defenders of ‘prophets who can tell the future.’ But on the other hand they love games of chance that are inherently unpredictable but still require planning, chess/gambling/dice and card games, and so on. They use games both on land and aboard ships during down time to relax, bond and trade small stakes competition. They also allow children to play as an early educational exercise in dealing with uncertainty and trusting yourself (contrasted with plenty of team based games for all ages to ensure crews support and protect each other collectively rather than focusing on personal glory). Despite being competitive, a humble attitude towards losing is encouraged to help prevent infighting, defeatist attitudes and an improvement focused growth mindset.

- All of the islands have an intensely important shared cultural value and survival strategy of reciprocal hospitality year round, even toward outsiders who sail into their territory. This serves multiple functions: keeps collective community ties strong even during ‘low contact’ periods during summer when the monsters arrive to stifle ocean travel and acts as glue/social capital during winter meet-up months, reinforces a positive reputation with outsiders (‘we protect you from having to deal with the monsters and keep you fed and safe even when they’re not around, you can come live here if you can prove yourself useful’). However, this hospitality comes with the expectation that the guest adhere to the host’s rules and not doing so brands the guest as dangerous or suspicious and worthy of being ousted from literal safe harbour (so whatever fate befalls them on the ocean is seen as ‘their fault’),

- Leadership has functionally meritocratic mechanisms in place to endure competence and prevent nepotism by putting the would-be leader(s) through a year long trial of commanding a ship during summer, managing the logistics of winter and effectively organising the preparation periods of training and crop harvest in spring/autumn respectively. The pool of leadership candidates includes not just monarchical heirs, military generals or high end democratic politicians, but regular people who prove their competence enough to earn the rank of captain without noble or merchant funding. However in spite of this meritocratic air, in practice leadership tends to circle around the already established upper classes (or specific families who have them or the wealthy mercantile class as patrons) rather then truly extending to everyone, due to the upper classes having easier access to high quality harvested mana for better weapons/armour (including mature elemental mana from magically adapted animals) and social skills training to manage crew politics more effectively.

- Their attitude toward the sea monsters on which their society orbits around is contradictory—they are simultaneously a highly dangerous, nigh indestructible force that cannot be reasoned with and so provoked great fear and hatred, but also present a consistent common enemy to keep island infighting to a minimum and present a religious justification for the status quo/their sense of purpose and core beliefs (‘they were sent here by the gods as a worthiness of existence test for humanity and failure to survive them for even one year means the world will be destroyed’) so are trusted with cautious reverence. There are priests and scientists dedicated to attempting to understand the sea monsters socially and biologically as living creatures, militant groups who believe the ‘divine test’ has been passed/is a punishment and that the creatures must be entirely wiped out despite their importance to the world’s ecology, and splinter groups who routinely try to appease the sea beasts with offerings of food and edible metals (which helps to perpetuate the loop of them returning every summer and getting within close proximity of the islands which is backed by governments to uphold the status quo).

Good news: he still has his memories.

Bad news: he’s VERY short. And grumpy.

Optimus Prime is the first to land on earth, heavily damaged and nearly offline.

The Autobots need their leader, so the Matrix is forced to put him in a deep stasis while it slowly mends his body back together.

A few years later, humans running a small garage and scrapyard receive a rusty sun-bleached semi truck that’s clearly on its last leg.

They have a good look at it, trying to find any pieces that are worth salvaging, only to be shocked to find the engine still perfectly intact, even after years of the outside rotting away.

Surprised but shrugging it off as luck and a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually make some money, they tinker with the truck’s insides and then have it stored in the warehouse for the night...

One of the family members is awoken to loud noises coming from said warehouse, sounds that they can’t quite put their finger on…

Grabbing the keys from their grandma’s coat, they head outside and are greeted with unnatural blue lights through the windows, more strange noises coming from something inside…

Curiosity pushes them forward, even as their hands shake with every twist of the number code for the lock.

With the click of the now unlocked door, and a thumping heart, the person yanks the door open;

And they don’t think their eyelids have ever stretched so wide as they have now, as they stare, open mouthed, at the creature in the place of an ancient truck.

A creature of metal, with the same smokestacks and faded blue and red paint.

Before they can even think to bolt, the creature- the creature speaks;

“Please!”

(It voice is so weak, so miserable sounding, nothing like its immense size and stoic face guard(?))

“I- I’m sorry, I’m sorry-”

(It seems to pause, chest(?) moving erratically, struggling to keep calm, taking in dry breathes, human-like)

“I…”

It trailed off.

In the end, it didn’t need to say anything.

It was clear it had just woken up, after who knows how many years of unconsciousness.

And from the looks of its current condition, it's escaped from a very rough place…

Unfortunately, due of a severe lack of understanding / acceptance from the mecha around him, and therefore having a lack of education on how to master this ability, it’s basically useless.

As Optimus Prime, he’s learned the basics, but it’s still not enough to be any use in the face of predicting raids or turning the tides in battle.

Because of this, no one actually knows Optimus is an Outlier, because there’s no point in mentioning a power that has no value if you don’t had the proper time or focus to get the hang of it.

(On the other side, Soundwave knows, having immediately clocked Orion Pax as they were chatting with Megatron, unaware of the unique nature of their own EM Field)

Oof. My headcanon is that all Autobots born after the fall of the Golden Age were Creator Harvested (meaning that genetics were not passed from the two donors, just the energy boost to put sparks into existence) so Sentinel didn’t have creators!! Only a guardian/mentor
