i dunno if you even read these but there was no way to contact you on main: activeg's post with that maitide person got the OP transphobically harassed. it's not even a real person's opinion, it's a fandom rp blog. a real person's being harassed for an opinion on veganism posted by a fictional character. both OPs have been requesting people take it down for harm-reduction purposes.

One of my favourite things is when someone doesn’t know the Irish for a word so they just put a fada on the English word See: sófa
What’s even better is when an Irish word is just the English word with a fada See: fón
What’s EVEN BETTER is when the Gàidhlig is just the English word spelled out phonetically See: draibhear
But wait, there’s more! Tidsear (teacher) Gèam (game) Nurs (nurse) Baidhseagal (bicycle) And they’re just the ones I remember off the top of my head.
That’s not even trying, are there non-Béarlachas alternatives? Like guthán and gluaisteán in Irish instead of fón and carr.

Actually, in the case of car I’m pretty sure that the word carr existed in Irish before car existed in English. So while they’re very similar, carr is not an English loan word!
Yeah, carr was the word for a cart. Then cars replaced them but people kept using the word because they sounded the same and basically served the same function which is pretty cool.

I got 56%, and I consider myself fairly good at linguistic indentification. Make of that what you will.
(That said, even when I got them wrong, I correctly identified the language family even if not the specific tongue.)

They are the people who proposed "acolyte des illustres" (acolyte of the renowned ones) for followers, what did you expect. And I love so much the "piège à clic". "Clic" is an anglicism.
also I speak very very little French but like.... this seems to really not get to the heart of the word podcast? iPod + broadcast? could they not go for something like abbreviating diffusion? i-diff? idk but like you need something convenient and like.... not poetic, but not as painfully literal as audio à demande

France hates english language because they’re like ‘we must stay pure pure language............’ like shut up you have lol in your dictonnary but can’t accept iel (neutral pronoun) as an official pronoun
ok but if I may add a few precisions:
First of all there is no government body in charge of preserving the french language in the governement of france. Or at least there is none with any real power. For exemple the governement body in charge of the health of the population is the “ministère des solidarités et de la santé” (ministry of Solidarities and Health), formerly known as “ministère des affaires sociales et de la santé” (ministry of social affairs and Health) and it has a budget to fullfill its missions and actually have authority over several things such has social security which it manages in association with the “ministère des finances et des comptes publiques” (ministry of public finances and public budget), public health planning, or even social studies and statistical analysis of the population (which is does with the help of the aforementioned ministry and the “ministère du travail, de l’emploi et du dialogue social” (ministry of work, employement, and social dialogue)). However there is no structure with any authority over the french language.There is an institution in charge of teaching proper french is the mission of public school which is under the authority of the L’éducation Nationale (National Education) or Ministère de l’éducation nationale which deals with all school related issues from preschool to the end of highschool but it’s mission in itself is not to preserve the purity of the language it’s to teach the language itself.
There is, however, an institution called L’Académie Française (The French Academy) which is what this post is reffering to. It is important to note that l’académie française has no legal authority over the use of french language. L’éducation Nationale is not required to ask for its advice and actually oftent goes against it like the rest of France and the rest of the governement actually. L’académie Française is a group of historians, philosophers, writers, journalists, politic personnalities and a grand total of of ZERO LINGUISTS whose mission is to “preserve” a made up purity for a language they don’t actually understand because they feel so entitled to push norms that no one use onto it. They, for exemple, were the one that came up wih “acolytes des illustres” as a “translation” for “followers” even though the much more apt term “abonnés” (litteraly “subscribers”) already existed and was pretty much as used as “followers”. Some faithfull (right leaning) newspapers will almost relay the Académie’s opinion on a linguistic (or not) matter but it has no real power over the actual way french is spoken
for exemple the académie française is strongly against “inclusive writing” which is not that easy to explain to non french but is basically a way to include women into written speech more easily. However the State Secretary for the equality of Men and Women and fight against discrimination (secrétatiat d’état chargé de l’égalité hommes femmes et de la lutte contre les discrimination), an institution with actual powers made an inscructional booklet on inclusive writing which sparked an increased use of it in official government administrations until the prime minister Edouard Philipe (who is an asshole) came up with a circular to prohibit it in official government communication. A lot of people still use it and non government agency are perfectly allowed to use it.
the debates on french languages are so prohiminent, not because of a genuine love for the french language but because french language has historicalluy been instrumentalised as part of an often nationalist agenda (a bit like people saying that they won’t use they/them pronouns because it’s not proper english even though it’s been in the language for centuries now)
A living language is supposed to evolve, to mix up with others, to evolve.
French people can’t agree on what to call one of their most consumed pastry. they can’t agree on how to pronounce the O sound. they always come up with with words that objectlively make ,have no sense but make perfect sense to the group that uses it (wesh, fraté, gavé, turbo-, peuchère...). Puyrity of language really isn’t an acutal concern of a grand majority of french speakers
On that not i’d like to remind ya’ll that the main reason the word piège çà clic is used is not to replace clickbait but to replace the former translation which was actually spontaneous and widely spread and was “putaclic” and was frowned upon for good reason, namely that half the word is base on the word slut
TL;DR French people aren’t bad at integrating foreing languages not even english. A small number of people use the french language to further their own (often nationalist) agenda and pretend to have authority over it because they are unconfrotable about the idea of language being popular and accessible to all and not just an elite that can dictate to others how to speak
As an older french person, I must say that french government did pass a law to "protect french language" by forcing companies to use french in commercial and communication. It was 1994's Toubon Law.
It's not as hard as it was supposed to be at the time but for a moment companies were forced to find a french equivalent of any foreign word they would use in commercial/official communication. Like, you weren't supposed to use "weekend" in those. (Everyone was and still use weekend all the time) but "fin de semaine".
L'Académie Française was asked for help, and that's when those ridiculous translations started. Or at least when they started to be talked about in media.
That was a lot of fun at the time. Satirical show "Les Guignols de l'Info", newspaper "Le Canard Enchaîné" and several comedians/cartoonists worked around "Mister Allgood"'s idea. My parents' had a small book called "Sky, Mister Allgood !" suggesting dumb translation for every single English word or phrase used by french people.
I think about it every time l'Académie Française makes a suggestion. It's been 26 years and no-one use those words.
So I laugh at it and let it die.
