on social media there seems to be a lot of interest in reading Obsession as a straightforward morality tale about rape culture and entitled men, but the male protagonist clearly doesn't intend to coerce anyone by supernatural means and has no reason to believe that such a thing is even possible by means of a novelty gift item! the fact that it is possible in this universe is an indictment of the people who sold the deadly item to unsuspecting customers for perverse reasons of their own, and their actions are the source of all the immoral acts in the story.

there's also a faction of social media that interprets Obsession as commentary on crazy girlfriends, but while she is legit crazy in the movie it doesn't really seem like the kind of crazy that maps neatly to redpill gender warfare ideas, and without the supernatural aspect the movie would have ended with him simply calling the police and leaving.

conceding that the wish for Nikki to love Bear more than anyone in the world is a necessary plot device for the movie, I do think that the extreme nature of this wish (as opposed to something like, "I wish she would go out with me" or "I wish she would see me as a romantic partner") indicates a kind of entitlement or at the very least indicates Bear's immature understanding of healthy relationships. yes, it is the wish willow people's fault for providing this curséd object (even though they did warn him), but he also asked for the most 5 year old version of what he was (ostensibly) seeking.

Bear also has ample opportunities to use his big boy voice and just tell her how he feels and takes none of them, which to me reads as someone who wants something but is unwilling to ask for it, or who knows that the feelings are not reciprocated and wants it anyway.

also, the fact that as the movie goes on he comes to learn that Nikki's soul is essentially trapped and that she is not a willing participant in this situation but Bear does nothing out of fear is an indictment of his character separate from any sexual dynamics. I left the movie thinking that Bear was a creep, especially since Nikki does some weird shit early on in the movie that would make someone who actually cared about her try to get her serious help, but he just continues to try and force his preferred version of reality.
