something else that's just occurred to me in talking about sources of sorcery in this world - brennan did mention way back when that aniko seremai was a sorcerer, and that his house, while being vassals to tachonis, did have a sorcerous origin of their own (something snake related, which is why it's the symbol of their house)

but his abilities, the spellcasting, the poison attacks, i don't think we ever saw from gaya (not before she died, anyway)

she fights purely with a sword and shield and was exiled to castle torch by her family for unknown reasons, but stayed there out of wanting to do right by her family's wishes and keep her honor, until she died and realised she'd wasted her entire life for them

i wonder if she and occtis have more in common than they ever realised

Because with how quickly Grace was able to pick up Eridian, even with literally NOTHING about it being familiar the way a human language would be, they probably could have chosen Mandarin as the universal language on Stratt's Vat and he would have just. Learned it.

It's wild to watch the phrase "tumblr sexyman" morph into "man that tumblr thinks is sexy," because when I first saw the phrase come into use, I always saw it used in reference to the phenomenon of "when presented with a wide array of fictional characters, tumblr will always pick the skinny white man to obsess over, and if the fan-favorite character has no canonical human appearance, the fandom will inevitably create a popular fanon of the character as as a skinny white man."

When I hear "tumblr sexyman," I think of Cecil Night Vale being constantly depicted as a skinny white man instead of literally anything else. I think of the background character white men who get elevated over protagonists that are women, people of color, or otherwise not the white man power fantasy.

"Tumblr sexyman" is, like. An insult. I DON'T want any of my blorbos to win a "tumblr sexyman" poll. "Tumblr sexyman" is the exact opposite of what I want my own OCs to be. If any of my characters ever get called "tumblr sexyman," I will have to immediately re-evaluate myself and the art I'm making.

It's so funny when yt people are watching old 2d animations and say shit like "wow this movie holds up so well for how old it is" YEAH because art is eternal and the technology is not. that's why good art direction will always outlive the futile pursuit of hyperrealism, which will always show all the faults and wrinkles of the technology available at the time. a good ass painting will forever be a good ass painting if only there are eyes to see it.

Having finally witnessed wild alligator courtship for myself, I can WHOLEHEARTEDLY SAY it's just as cute as the texts make it seem. Like yes, they really DO rub snoots! They really do take turns swimming after each other! It's adorable!

@nohriantomatoes It probably did happen with dinosaurs! At least the big carnivores. Birds they might be, but when you look at the ends of their faces, they have sensory pits.

Sensory pits are clusters of nerves- they're part of what we call the ISOs in crocodilians. ISO means "Integumentary Sensory Organs," and they're exceptionally sensitive- a crocodilian's face is more sensitive than a human fingertip. They can sense tiny pressure changes in water (as in "the pressure change from a single drop") even when their hearing is disrupted.

You can see the foramina for the nerve endings really clearly on this alligator skull.

And while they do use these nerves for hunting, they also use them for courtship. It's seen across species, and it's an important part of the process. While we can't entirely reconstruct something so complex as courtship in theropods, we do know that there are several species with the sensory pits that indicate the presence of ISOs. Juravenator had them on its tail, Daspletosaurus had them on its face- so did Neovenator and the other tyrannosaurids.

It just kinda stands to reason that if they have the same sensory organs, they'd probably process sensation the same way. And if they're processing sensation the same way, then yeah, snout rubbing as part of courtship makes sense. The nerve struction is a lot more like what we see in crocodilians than what we see in modern birds!
