like i quite literally have never been more passionate about anything than i am about the human race’s invariable desire to tell stories and the fact that we always find a way to do it, through spoken language and written language and body language and visual art and theater and poetry and oral tradition and a million other things. there are so many things we take for granted about the human experience that we never stop to think about but i really want you to take a step back and consider how fucking amazing it is that our need to tell stories transcends all boundaries of time and geography and borders and language. it is one of very few things that is legitimately intrinsic to human nature and i will never stop being completely in awe of humanity for that.

one thing i love abt black sails is that it’s a show that you can watch. if you haven’t seen it, and you think you can’t watch it, good news! you can. it’s a show, and you can watch it. now, even. if you feel like you’re waiting for the right time to start black sails, the right time is now! if you think you missed your chance to watch black sails— good news! you didn’t! you can still watch it now! there’s no better time than today. if you’re wishing you could’ve watched the show a few years ago when the fandom was more active and it was in its prime— good news! you’re making that up, or you’re being lied to. there was never a major black sails moment on this site, and not that many people have seen it to begin with, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on anything. also, nearly everyone who has ever seen the show is still posting about it today, plus we get a few new people each year, so if you think about it, we’re really in our prime right NOW ! and we’ll be even better off, once you watch the show. you can watch it at any point. you can find it steaming somewhere probably, or you can do what most people do and pirate it, you know, to get in the black sails spirit. it’s a show. and you—yes, you—can watch it.

So interesting that C4E3 not only establishes that Wic and Tyranny have been made to be pawns in plots larger than them but Brennan, Sam, and Whitney go further to make it clear that not even their bodies are their own.

Tyranny has been given a body with the explicit stipulations that she obey the commands of house Halovar or that body will be taken away from her. That threat has defined literally her entire time in Araman thus far, as she very much does not want to return to the pit she originated from. And since her "birth" (arrival to this plane), she has had to live with the fact that her body was provided only for the Halovar's nefarious plans for power, even if she's not really interested in those plans. And that's why she gets attached to Wic when he instead sees her as her own person capable of good.

Wicander on the other hand only recently learned that he literally only exists because his grandmother artificially inseminated herself with an angel she had chained and trapped and abused (said artificial insemination definitely being alluded to being on par with sexual assault). Not only that but his family had perpetually further affected his body by feeding him angel fluids and literally tattooing angel blood into his skin.

They're such compelling examples of how organized religion and cults are built on the constant desecration of the body. Tyranny as a new member who comes from "evil" and thus whose body (ie. salvation) is a privilege that must be earned. Always being reminded that they could be cast out the moment they step out of line. And Wicander as a born-in member who must face that his body is entirely built from lies, rape, and suffering and who has unknowingly been repeatedly assaulted himself by the activities of this cult. But at the same time, who has also been told that they are innately holy/pure but at risk of being tarnished, resulting in a near-total deprivation of normal behaviors. A body both untouched and over-touched.

Idk man, Sam, Whitney, and Brennan are whether, knowingly or unknowingly, developing such a devastating depiction of how cults leave their mark on the mind/soul through the body. And furthermore, how they violate every part of a person, not just the mind.

And then she meets a dashing-if-drunken forty-something watchman and they think they’re too old for love but they are so, so, so wrong and their relationship starts with mutual respect and trust and grows into an incredible amount of love and affection

But she’s a fat goddess the whole time and there’s never anything wrong with that because the woman is a city

There’s some line in some book, I think it’s The Fifth Elephant, about Sybil being a ‘big girl’ and how ‘big girls are taught to make themselves small so other people feel bigger’ WOW YES that is such a true thing though.

Within pages of this she is bending iron bars over werewolves’ heads. I really wish she’d been able to have a go at Serafine, though, after the way the woman was talking about her at the beginning of the book, as if being friendly, even with people you don’t like, is some kind of weakness.

The Fifth Elephant is where Sybil really starts to flourish as a character, IMO. And the thing is, she’s far from stupid. She really pays attention to people in a manner possibly only surpassed by Carrot, which is how she memorizes whole dwarfish arias to deploy for maximum emotional impact and extensive notes on fat mining to haggle with the Low King. She notices people, and keeps up with them, and because of that she is able to mobilize the entire of the Sto Plains to watch a Goblin performance at a moment’s notice, changing the fate of an entire race.

Sybil is large and she is kind and she can think. She is not stupid. She is not deaf. She takes such an interest in you and everything that’s happening in your life and you are damn lucky that she is kind.

Discworld books are compilations of jokes, strung together by things Sir Terry Pratchett is upset about and needs to get off his chest. For Hogfather (among other things), he's upset about the way children are treated. Because children are adults, back when magic was real and all the details of the world were new and written large.

They shouldn't be allowed to talk twee, because that's blatant manipulation. They're not innocent; they can be as cynical and pragmatic as any adult, when it comes to getting something they want. There's a reason they have to be prompted and taught to say "thank you".

They shouldn't be coddled. Modern, watered-down fairy tales are made for adults' sensibilities, not children's. Children are perfectly happy with blood in stories--so long as the blood happens by (or to) people who deserve it. Threaten them with a Loony Toons punishment (like knotting their arms behind their head) and they'll love it. And they'll listen, because you're taking them seriously by letting them in on the joke instead of talking over their heads, thinking they won't notice.

Children enjoy a book that's too hard for them, instead of what adults think will be wholesome and educational. And those books will be better for them too; children don't need how-to manuals about being children. Adults, on the other hand, can benefit from having their memories jogged about what childhood was really like.

A parent will say their child wants something innocent and mundane, like a doll or a toy pony. But the child wants a real pony that piddles all over the carpet and a full-sized sword. And they deserve that, because swords are educational; if the child hurts themselves, they've learned a very important lesson.

Best start them with a wooden one, though. There's a limit to what mistakes should be within reach of a child's mischievous hands.

What children shouldn't be threatened with is monsters. They can't be logiced out of monsters afterwards. They know better than adults that monsters exist; adults forget, because they keep giving the monsters names, explaining them, getting used to them, and then stop seeing them for what they are.

What adults can give children is The Poker That Kills Only Monsters. Protect them, give them a future, and show them that monsters can be dealt with, just like anything else. Done right, children will enjoy it so much they'll go out of the way to find some monsters. Because they love to see an adult teach a monster to fear The Poker.

reminder to visit museums, even if you feel out of place. you feel out of place because there is an established concept of inaccessibility of "high culture" to the masses, purposefully developed to distinguish between social classes.

take up space, read the plaques, get the audioguides. you are just as entitled and right in being there. visit museums, boycott museums, be expressive about your opinions about museums.

a lot of museums are free, or discounted for youth and students. take advantage of that. check your local art museum. check your local history museum. museums are there for you, they are there to educate the public, not to distinguish between class. it isn't a private collection, it's a public exhibit.

GO TO MUSEUMS!!!!!!!

We genuinely LOVE first time museum goers and will pretty much bend over backwards to make sure you feel welcome, and like you're part of art and history. If you let someone know it's your first time at a museum, chances are their eyes will light up, and you'll get "These are my favorites" or "Oh, here's a little secret" and most likely a "thank you for choosing US!"

Genuinely, part of the job is to make visitors aware that museums are for everyone, and we're all part of this human story.

Back in my museum days, I rarely got to talk to patrons because I was an archivist and therefore not in the patron-facing part of the institution. Some of my archival colleagues dreaded having to talk to visitors, but I actually loved it. When I would walk through the public areas of the museum, I'd often carry an artifact with me at random, just to invite conversation. I'd stop and look at something on a gallery wall and a patron would say, "oh what's that you're holding?" and I got to say "oh, this? This is a reel of the original Technicolor negative of The Wizard of Oz," and they would go ooooh and then I got to spend ten minutes excitedly explaining the Three-strip Technicolor process to someone who didn't ask, which made me happy, and made them feel like they'd gotten some secret behind-the-scenes knowledge that no one else got.

tl;dr museums of any kind are not ivory towers – go enjoy exhibits, but also talk to anyone and everyone working there! No one will stick their nose in the air because they know more than you; they work there because they are amazing and very approachable nerds who will spend their entire day info-dumping to you and it's wonderful.

Ok, I forgot to add a photo to my reblog, but to be fair I was talking more about the museum experience and used the Technicolor reel as an example. But here is one reel:

The three strip technicolor process (and here I am massively oversimplifying because I could write about this for hours and also don’t @ me because I do know what I’m talking about) required a custom camera, which was GIANT and FUCK-ALL HEAVY. The camera processed three strips of standard black and white (monochrome) film when exposing, with a beam-splitter sending the light through a prism and filters to each strip simultaneously.

This, obviously, required a shit-ton of light on the sets in order to get the right exposure for each strip. One strip would go through a green filter, so that only the green part of the spectrum was exposed on the film. The other two reels were sandwiched together and filtered only for red and blue (but not just with filters; there was a chemical process used to treat the raw film for each color in order to make it sensitive to certain parts of the spectrum).

In the printing process, the reels had to be specially processed by imbibition (a suuuuper complicated chemical dye-transfer process) in order to put the three color channels together and make one master color print for duplication.

If you’re at all interested in mechanical engineering or chemistry or just film in general, it’s an absolutely fascinating process to learn about.
