If Neil Gaiman died tomorrow, the damage that engaging with his work does is no longer being done. He'll be dead. He can no longer do damage, ergo, engaging with his work will no longer cause harm, because dead men cannot abuse women. But he is alive today, and engaging with his work gives him the things he needs to abuse more women, so I'm going to continue avoiding his work. When he dies...that calculation will change.
It is acceptable to engage with Lovecraft's work as you will because dead men whose works are in public domain fund no hate groups.

Had Rowling not set up her foundation that exists solely to funnel Harry Potter IP money into the eradication of trans people, then I would have said, "once she dies, feel free to engage with Harry Potter again, dead TERFs fund no evil policies."
But she did. That foundation will continue to fund that money towards the eradication of trans people long after rowling herself has died. Therefore, Harry Potter is not something to pick back up, even after Rowling dies.
