Starting my speech at the Omelas city council with a child acknowledgement statement
btw it's so fucking stupid you can be anxious physically in your body even after you've decided mentally you don't care. I'm supposed to be in charge here
while rewatching extended LOTR i kept having these horrifying flashes of it as a worse movie, just, like, if the decisions made had been even 30% more inclined towards repeatedly capturing the attention of or explaining concepts to a disinterested audience
BILBO: Oh, Frodo Baggins. You worry too much. I’ve taken care of you all these years, haven’t I?
FRODO: Yes. Ever since my parents died in that tragic boating accident when I was only twelve years old.
BILBO: A terrible tragedy. Your poor mother and father, lost on the Brandywine River.
FRODO: I still miss them every day.
[INSERT: Frodo sadly rotating the tea cup in his hands.]
FRODO (CONT'D): Especially my mother.
BILBO: You were very young when she died.
FRODO: I do not remember much about her now. Only fragments.
BILBO: Fragments?
FRODO: She was beautiful. Gentle. Kind. And she used to sing to me when I was frightened.
BILBO: Do you remember the song?
FRODO: No… Not the words. Only the melody, and the way it made me feel… brave.
[Frodo begins humming the tune of “Concerning Hobbits”]
Imagine you’re sitting with two of your bros and they’ve both just given you deer-in-the-headlights looks when you pointed out that it was brave of the obviously gay figure skater to come to Sochi, and the only reason they could be giving you those looks of course is because they just aren’t as up on social issues like this as you are, so because you’re a nice guy and a good ally you explain to them btw Russia is not safe for queer people to help them out so they don’t embarrass themselves in front of actual queer people some day. Then imagine a few years later one of them comes out as gay on the ice right in front of you and the world and you have to sit with the knowledge that you once straight-splained queerphobia to a gay man. You summon the courage to apologize to him for it and have a laugh over it and you walk away thinking phew that was embarrassing but at least I did what I had to do and he was cool about it and now I never have to retroactively cringe at myself about this again. Then imagine a few more years later the same thing happens with the OTHER guy 😭
*feels my body get anxious for no reason* what is it boy, what do you see?
A lot of the time when I point out that some right-wing policy is proven to not achieve the thing it purports to have as a goal, people rightly point out that the real goal is the negative outcomes that do happen.
Which is correct!
But this is often framed as me approaching the right wing naively by the respondent.
That's not the case at all. I know they're evil. The goal is to demonstrate that they're lying by exposing the way the rhetoric fails to line up with reality.
This has to be ongoing work because someone new has their political awakening every day. Every day, someone needs to learn that the right wing position is wrong on all levels, not just the obvious ones.
there will be people out there who still think the war on drugs (as the absolute first thing that comes to mind) is a legitimate social cause against an antisocial blight on society. if you come out the gate with (the very true statement) that it's actually been a deliberate campaign to target minorities and other undesirable groups to the ruling class, you're going to sound like a clueless conspiracy nut
whereas if you come with a very defensible, statistically supported point of "it doesn't work and has never worked" you can open the door to the follow up question of "why did the government do it in the first place, and (in many cases) why are they still doing it?"
This, exactly.
The play is to:
Demonstrate that the policy doesn't work
Demonstrate that the people enforcing the policy have everything they need to know it doesn't work
Provide the context of what the policy achieves in the absence of its "intended" outcome.
Remind people that the purpose of a system is what it does.
Then, instead of being a non-sequitur claim you're just pulling out of thin air, the conclusion is the most reasonable way to assemble the provided puzzle pieces.
This was fun. Idea from @aslongasitsblack's original post. Had to draw it:)
I think perhaps the only way in which queer people have achieved true parity with straight people is that queer romantasy is just as bad.

the draw of arranged marriage AUs to me is really the way the dubcon of it all binds them together. neither of them have a choice in being here, something else is foisting this upon them whether that’s their parents or the political situation around them or expectation or something else, but the point is that they don’t get that one choice. so they have to make a choice somewhere else, that now that they’re here, they’re going to make it work. they’re each other’s only allies, in this cage built around them. they may have been coerced into swearing to stand by each other through anything, but they did swear.
it’s not love at first, or second, or third sight. it’s not love in the wedding bed the first time, whether they grit their teeth through it or decide together to forgo that binding step and try to get around it as long as they can. it’s about sharing a bed with a stranger while you learn their nightmares and how they hog the covers. it’s about sharing a name before you even know each other’s hobbies. the appearances you have to keep up, and the connection you find in both being exhausted by them, laughing together because isn’t it ridiculous how you not only have to be married but you have to act like it’s perfect and lovely for everyone else watching. it’s love that creeps up quiet and slow, between shared secrets that make your wedding bands mean something for the first time, and trying to protect each other from the trap you’re both in. and it’s about having the mortifying thought of “oh my god, i have a crush on my wife.”
