I just learned I have some witches heritage. I want to learn more, maybe figure out some simple magic to help on hunts. I don’t expect you to know much but anything is helpful.
Witching For Beginners 101:
WARNING: Witchcraft is a power that needs to be respected and dealt with carefully. So, before you take it upon yourself to actually practice, try to make sure that you understand that there may and will be consequences to what you've casted or wished for.
Nothing is black and white, and definitely not an inexplainable source of power like witchcraft. It's complex, it's deep, and widely misunderstood.
Now that that's out of the way, here's your tips for simple magic:
Start small and simple. Learn about candle colors and their meanings. Learn about Chakras. Learn about herbs and their meanings. Learn about the Zodiacs. Learn about the power of different waters. Learn about the elements. Learn about Moon Phases. The moon is incredibly important. A lot of witches use the phases of the moon in many of their practices. Do these basic things, take notes, and then start actually casting.
You need to understand what you're doing before you do it.
Now, after research, up your game with cleansing, divination, maybe even some basic protection spells. Don't ever start out with a love spell, it's such a cliche and something almost every beginner has done and regretted. Just don't do it!
Cleansing: Smudging, Oils, Water, Chanting, Sweeping, Singing Bowl, Bells, Even physically cleaning your space is cleaning.
Divination: Runes, I Ching, Pendulum, Scrying, Palmistry, Dowsing, Pyromancy, Tasseography, Oomancy, Capnomancy, Catoptromancy, Hydromancy, Astrology, Oneiromancy, Cartomancy, etc. (These are different forms of divination that you should be looking into as a beginner if divination is something you're interested in. Because Tarot isn't the only thing one can use.)
Protection: Learning to ward and protect yourself spiritually is where you should always start when it comes to first time spellwork. After all, it's important to learn and do. You should never do any bigtime casting without something protecting you spiritually.
While casting you're exerting a lot of energy, and that can make you susceptible to unwanted attachments or energy drainage. Protection can vary from veiling with a headscarf, wearing a protective necklace, carrying a protective stone with you, drawing/carving sigils, lighting a candle, and even a particular saying can work. But learn it, do it, and improve it.
Warding goes the same way. But focus on what exactly you're warding before you cast. You don't want the spell to not work, or for it to ward the wrong thing in your life. If it's a person, simply write their name on a piece of paper, fold it away from you three times, and you can either burn it or freeze in in your freezer. They'll be gone in no time.
Tip number three would be to start making your own stuff. Dry your own flowers and herbs with intentions, make your own black salt, get in tune with your tools and with yourself so your casting is more potent. You don't need to buy a whole bunch of random stuff just to be a successful witch.
I go out and find my own things. Snakeskin, red bricks, rusted coffin nails or railroad spikes, bones, dead bugs, fur, whiskers, herbs and plants, rocks (Hag-stones, small flat rocks for Rune making), etc. The planet offers you exactly what you need. You don't have to only rely on stores to do that for you.
Always remember that witchcraft isn't the same for everyone. You can do certain things in a spell or casting that feel right to you but is weird to others. You can believe in certain things too (Whether the rule of three is a legit thing or not.), none of your work has to look like others, just get to know the basics first before you start to dabble.
