"Daydreaming again?"
The figure in front of you tilts its head to one side, fingers lightly tapping on the clipboard in slow rhythms, eyes squinting in both confusion and worry behind squared glasses. The figure waves his free hand in front of your face, bringing your unfocused eyes slowly back to reality. He looks at his watch, mumbling to himself and scribbling on the paper.
"You really shouldn't do that".
He gently lifts your finger, reading the numbers on the pulse oximeter that's placed on your index. Oh yeah, I'm at Zayne's office. You think to yourself as your eyes trace his office, your gaze eventually landing on him, the look of concern plastering his face. You avoided his gaze, feeling a somewhat disappointed stare bore through you.
"How long has it been sin--" Zayne began, sounding irritated already.
"I am not crazy, Zayne" You belted, already feeling stressed at the repeated questions, causing the pulse ox machine to beep faster. In and Out. You tell yourself, breathe in, breathe out. "2 days ago, I saw it" You looked up at him, feeling defeated. His expression changed, smug, as if he won. He nodded, then sat himself down at his desk.
"Zayne I-" You started to trail off. "-This is-" You took a breath. "-you need to believe me, Caleb doesn't, i need you too" You felt as if you were pleading with the man. Ever since then, since the wanderer attacks, you've been seeing it- him. A shadowy-like figure, always in your peripherals, always near-by, always in-sight but never solid to make out a description.
It started 3 months ago. You were returning home after having a meal out with your close friend and colleague, Tara. In celebration of finishing a tough week at the Hunters Association. It was dark; the moon illuminated the streets. You should have grabbed a taxi, but decided it was quicker to walk. That's when you heard it: the screaming in the distance and the sound of metal scratching metal. Running through the abandoned alley towards the sound, they appeared before you, wanderers. You ran behind the nearest car and scoped the area. About 7 wanderers, 3 casualties- all fairly minor. Shit, you cursed to yourself. Why now. That is when you felt it, this overwhelming presence, not a wanderer but something else. You caught glimpses of it, in a blink of an eye, it had already taken out 4 of them. You couldn't just sit back. You raced out with your Hunters Sword in hand, aiming for the closest wanderer. You struck it once and it fell perfectly; well, that was easy. You went to turn towards the other one; that's when you were taken off guard. You had been clawed at across your stomach, then pressure came plummeting to your head. Everything faded to darkness.
You woke up groggily; nausea rose quickly. Your hand over your mouth, trying to withhold any sickness. Vision blurred as you tried to focus on your surroundings, beige sand covering your hunter's uniform- rocky structures loomed over you. You suspected you were in the cove just 2 blocks over from where the attack was. Your eyes gazed over at the cove opening; a figure stood, giving off the same overwhelming presence. It's him from the Wanderer attack, you thought. Did he save me? He turned away from you, ready to walk away.
"Hey-" you called out, reaching your arm out. He didn't take notice of you and jumped off the ledge. Your heart jumped at the action. What the fuck? "-why did you save me?" You shouted after him, never receiving an answer.
Caleb was the first to start acting differently, dismissive and cold. He told you time and time again that no one else was there with you, that you were on your own, and that you had fought them off. Was it all in your head? Or was he hiding something? Then he became overly protective- some days he scared you, threatened to keep you in his apartment several days at a time to keep you safe, hidden. You knew he followed you when you did leave. Zayne thought you would be safer with Caleb, to keep close eyes on you. They're both your childhood friends after all; they know what's best for you.
"You were attacked by a wanderer, that is all MC" Zayne stated. "There is nothing more. You suffered an immense concussion during your attack, you got yourself to safety because Caleb taught you better than to rely on others... There was no one else there." Zayne had built up anger in his voice, knuckles turning white, gripping his desk as he stood over it. Holding himself back from saying worse. "The sooner these fantasies of some 'mysterious saviour' leave your mind, the sooner you will stop being so deluded into thinking someone is following you" He said with heat, taking his glasses off momentarily to wipe his forehead. "Its not healthy, you are deluded...we-" He paused to correct himself. "-I can give you a higher dose of medic--"
"NO!" You pleaded, jumping off the medical bed and running towards Zayne's desk. "Please, please- I'll stop. Don't. I don't like the meds, please, tell Caleb I'm fine... tell him I don't need to keep coming back here...." Your breath quickened. "Please, stop with the therapy, you know me, Zayne-" Your voice cracked. "-you know me..."
Zayne watched as you panicked, standing still- intaking your every move. Guilt wrecked his face, eyes saddened like a puppy; it was like he was holding back tears. He hated seeing you beg. He hated seeing you like this, but you were unwell... whether this was an effect from the aethercore or a general trauma reaction, Zayne felt sick seeing you like this. Zayne walked over to the medic bench and reached into the drawer of miscellaneous drugs. He saw your regular medication, a light sedative to stop the anxiety- he traced his hand towards the bottle which was an antipsychotic, and winced at the thought. He looked over at you, your eyes filled with fear. Fear at him, of him. He withdrew his hand.
"I've called Caleb to pick you up mc" You felt sick. "I'll send you home with your regular dosage. I've given Caleb another medicine for you, for when... for when you can't cope." Your hands reached to your face, anger, frustration and betrayal- you sobbed quietly.
"Don't see this as a negative thing, MC. We- I am trying to help you with dealing with your attack." He looked up at you genuinely, walking up close to you, stroking a piece of your hair out of your face. You looked up at him before hearing a door creak open.
"Hey, Pips". A calm, cheerful voice erupted from behind you. You turned to see Caleb, all smiley at the door- his eyes saying something different. He walked up to you, placing a hand softly on your shoulder. "All good? Ready to come home?"
"..Y-yes"
"If you were seeing these 'shadows' again why didn't you say anything?" Caleb asked, setting a coffee of the table as he sat opposite you, as you curled in the corner. "Why did you go running off to Mr Doctor thinking he can help you better than I can--" You looked over at him, stunned. "Don't be scared, Pips, I am keeping you safe." Caleb's phone rang, eyes darting to it, a miscellaneous name you had never heard of. "I need to go." He got up abruptly. "Don't leave; you are safe here, safe from him," he said carelessly.

You looked up at the man, now putting on his uniform for the farspace fleet. Safe from who? You thought. There really was someone, it wasn't all in your mind? Were Caleb and Zayne hiding something from you?
"Safe from who, Caleb?" You repeat to yourself, lips quivering slightly. Caleb placed both hands on your knees, hovering over you in a close- intimidating proximity. "Yourself, silly" He chuckled playfully and left the apartment, locking the doors behind him.
You were left in an atmosphere of hesitation and fear, something felt off, felt wrong. You felt scared around Caleb. Was he more sinister than you once thought? Was he even the same Caleb you knew before the accident?. You glanced at the TV briefly, lying back on the sofa. Various reporters popping up on the news station, warnings about some 'beast' being sighted in the area, to lock all doors, to stay indoors, and to be weary when opening the door. Was this why Caleb left? Your eyes immediately glanced over towards the opened doors of the balcony. You hopped up quick, wanting to lock the door. As if some creature can scale an apartment building, right? you thought logically for a second. No, this is silly. You walked towards the door, faltering at the frame, you exhaled, stepping out of the door. You breathed in the last lot of fresh air of the night, gazing over the balcony, taking in the mesmerising sights of Linkon city- the city lights glowing beautifully.
Then you felt it, that presence. The overwhelming scent of warmth it became suffocating, the shadow, your shadow. So it had been following you? You turned around slowly. Your eyes fixed upon a figure perched upon your balcony railings, muscular, dark hair and piercing golden eyes, alluring you towards him. He had a slight smirk plastered on his face, playful in nature. His hand reached out towards your face.
"Bang!" He chuckled, jumping off the railing onto your balcony. You were stunned, speechless. You took a few steps back, arms covering your body protectively. "Are you the one-" You took a breath, hesitantly. "-the one who has been following me?" Questioning him desperately. A toothy grin erupted from his mouth. Are those... fangs? Your gaze lingered on him, his face, his body. He excitedly pounced forward at you, nearly making you fall back. He grabbed the sides of your arms to stabilize you; leaning forward, he subtly sniffed your hair. He wasn't violent; he wasn't aggressive; he was gentle, holding you delicately. He nodded at your question. Was this the beast the news was warning of? Was this who Caleb was after? A million thoughts raced through your mind about the stranger who was standing before you. The only thing you did know was that he was the one who rescued you; you knew it.

The forest was cold and bitter, and on a day like today you couldn't wait until you hit your next post. The cosy rustic vibes, the soothing warm bath, the relaxing cup of coffee. It is all you could of asked for on this mission of yours. You've stayed in two cabins so far in this journey, the first one was ran down, gaps in the logs and a faulty lock, the second one not so much better. It was the wishful thinking that kept you going on this mission, wishing you could have a smidgen of comfort on your next rest. Luke was a few steps ahead of you, his fiery and adventurous demeanour not faltering once. His confidence in this mission is what calmed your nerves about leaving the comfort of your home, always alert, always focused. It is something you admired in him strongly.
You never remembered how you ended up in this situation. It started with the dateviators, then talking to your furniture, then one day speaking to this eccentric microwave you had hidden in the corner of your kitchen. His strife in his believes about the Magnetron and some nuclear bomb had you interested. At first scared, but utterly intrigued in this man. Hopefully your curiosity won't get you killed, just a fun story to tell for when you and Luke get home.
Luke carried possibly every survival gear you could imagine. Knives, a stove, multiple spare clothes and hell, the man bought a tent. You giggled when you first left the house, thinking he looked like such a dork, whilst you had a rucksack with a few -minimal essentials- knowing you were staying in cabins and you could just 'suck it up' if things got rough for a night.
The skies turned dark as rain clouds above you set in, maybe it was time for you to eat your words at this point. You held your hand out as if to catch raindrops, but nothing came except from a slight rumble in the sky. "Ranger". Luke stopped in his tracks, turning around to address you. "The storms setting in, we can set up camp here for the night." Luke grinned as he knew his gear would come in handy despite your disapproval. Luke looked around the immediate area for the perfect spot, ignoring your protests behind him as you try getting his attention to what was happening right now.
"What? Nonono, we have the cabin" You wailed in frustration, Luke chuckled and slumped off his oversized bag. "The winds picking up and we still have several miles to go, I don't want you hiking at night, its dangerous". He explained to you in a soft tone as he was setting up your tent for the night, him putting your safety first made your heart flutter, you cringed at yourself for swooning over the bare minimum. You watched as Luke set up the tent next to several bushes, he was squatted on the floor- arms flexing as his top clung to him due to sweat and the light rain that began. You stood there, not remembering when you began seeing Luke like this and not just as a friend. It felt like a switch went off from where you saw him as this boy deluded in make believe to primal man that you couldn't help have slightly inappropriate thoughts of. You bit you lip, trying to supress any more thoughts of Luke pop up in your head as he finished fixing up the tent, making sure it was sturdy and safe for the night.
Lightning crackled and thunder roared as the night went on, nightfall hit very quick, you had a final look out of the tent- seeing nothing but but trees shake and rain hit the ground, you zipped up the tent and locked it. You decided you should try and get comfy for the night, just as Luke was doing, you dragged your backpack towards you, trying to find your sleeping bag and a few extra hoodies. shit. you looked in a panic around your bag as you couldn't find your sleeping bag. shit.shit.shit. nononono.
You sighed in frustration as you realised you did not have the one thing Luke told you to bring. You looked over a look at Luke to see he had already bundled himself up in blankets and a sleeping bag, along with a roll mat to keep him from being on the cold floor, unlike you who couldn't even feel her own ass. You sighed, knowing tonight was going to be a rough one for you. You put on a sweater followed by a hoodie, and two extra pair of socks in hopes it would keep the heat in. you lied down in the squished space you had, trying to get comfy.
You avoided eye contact with Luke for rest the evening, in fact, you tried your best to be minimal with him in general, he could tell something was off, he looked too nervous to pry. You felt shame in the thoughts you had of him, you thought if you ignored him then the thoughts would go away, and boy you were wrong.
It didn't help that Luke packed a 2 man tent, you could barely move without touching him, even when still you were still within an inch of him. Every so often you'd feel his body heat as he breathed and for a second you felt warm spread through you, relaxing you. You were both lied down at this point, you curled up on you side in your hoodies, facing Luke. Whilst Luke was in his sleeping bag on his back, resting his head on his arm- seeming to be accustomed to the cold weather. You tried shutting your eyes, thinking you wouldn't be cold if you were asleep, Luke shifted and his hand brushed your arm, he gasped quietly. "You're freezing" Luke had slight worried expression on his face. "You're going to get sick". You mumbled an incoherent response as your face was snuggled into your clothes. You heard a zip from beside you and uncovered your face to see Luke's sleeping bag undone on your side, he looked at you sternly. "You're not catching your death, get in". He told you. You couldn't lie, but him giving you orders made you feel all tingly.
You shifted slightly into his sleeping bag, surprised it could fit both of you. "take your hoodie off, you'll warm up quicker against my body heat" You sat in awkwardness as you slowly took off your hoodie, Luke kept his arm out so you could lie on it, or more his chest with his arm wrapped around you. You were lying into him, hand resting on his chest, moving as he breathed. Your limbs stiffly intertwining with Luke's as you tried making yourself comfy. Luke let out a laugh at your bashfulness.
